Pip pip and cheerio listeners, we're here to discuss the Simpsons' visit to London in this star-studded episode with more famous people than great jokes. Yes, they prioritize getting famous Brits in it from war criminal Tony Blair to hatemonger JK Rowling (plus a couple of UK citizens who aren't terrible people). But before that, we still get a couple of funny moments in the final episode written by John Swartzwelder. So grab your fish & chips for a podcast that goes deep into this era of US-UK relations!

I have strong memories of this one, while I'm sure I watched others this seasonit's def the last one I clearly remember before I fell off. Wild to learn it was Swartzwelder's last one too.

Mark

Horrible night, gonna fall asleep to this.

As a Brit the giggs speech makes complete sense to me 😎 Btw American “candy” tastes like vomit 🤢 It says bitch on the subtitles too

The whole Harry Potter thing is such a drag. I'm in my 40s so I missed the phenomenon, but my wife is 5 years younger and loved the stuff so naturally she wants to share it with our kids. My son kind of likes it, but he also isn't into reading so his affection has been a bit limited. My daughter could not care less. And for me, I hate the personal dilemma of when my son does express interest (or my wife) in some Harry Potter merch of not wanting to support Rowling in any way, albeit a minor one, but also wanting to do right by my loved ones when it comes to gift giving. I genuinely feel bad for Potter kids that have had something they love be tainted by its awful creator. Co-sign on the Epcot fish and chips. I probably ate too many meals of that stuff a few years ago when my family and I stayed at the Pop Century Resort. We would hop onto the Skyliner and mobile order the fish and chips and they'd be ready for us when we walked off. Only downside is seating in that area of the park sucks and you're stuck with mediocre British beer unless you want to take a walk with your rapidly deteriorating fried fish in search of something better. This episode kind of sucks. I am in an understandable fowl mood this morning, but the jokes just felt lazy (except the Jimmy Page one, that was pretty good). This is definitely not the UK equivalent to Bart vs Australia. A bummer of an episode for Swartzwelder to go out on.

About drinking at theme parks. My experience at California Adventure lines up with what Bob said. It takes a lot of effort and money. At Hollywood Studios in Orlando on the other hand, my wife and I were surprised at how quickly we were smashed. Had the most magical hangover the next day, and after a pilgrimage to the porcelain god, we were ready to drink around the world.

Jonathon

Had to chime in that drinking around the EPCOT world is definitely a thing and has been for a while, I guess. My wife has participated, but she said they used to give you a little passport that you checked off rather than a shirt. Not sure if they still have the passports or both now, but if the cost wasn't so outrageous and the park was not in Florida, I can see its appeal.

wildlandblazed

What a perfect episode for the post election environment

The EUROPEAN VACATION roundabout joke stands out to me because Chevy Chase at one point is clearly screaming "FUCK!" but it has super awkward ADR when you can see his mouth that overdubs it with "DAMN IT ALL" and that to me was funnier than like any of the intended jokes in that movie

Charles

I want to point out that Alaistair Campbell is the inspiration of Pete Capaldi’s character Malcolm Tucker, from The Thick of It and In the Loop. It’s a lot more fun to imagine those negotiations with Tucker in mind.

Not a fan of the British royals by any means, but saying Podcasting is more work than Prince Harry has ever done is purely untrue! He served in the British army and has been in active combat multiple times…. I love you guys but this is a very uncharacteristic mistake in research haha.

Dan Walker

Prince Harry had to pass basic training and actively serve overseas on multiple tours, please don’t Besmirch the only half decent royal 😂 you both put in more hours than Joe Rogan to podcasting, but don’t confuse that with working harder than a soldier with multiple tours, royal or not😂

I’m pretty sure I not only watched this episodes premiere, but there’s also a possibility I recorded it on vhs. Unfortunately if I did it likely got recorded over, but I can say likely I remember Homer using Bitch in the original broadcast. Listening to the two scenes side by side I think I prefer the jerk take more just cause it sounds like a better take from Dan. Homer ending up in the queens bedchambers at end of this episode mirrors a real life event in the 80’s where a man named Michael Fagan snuck into Buckingham Palace not once but twice and ended up talking with the Queen in her bedroom. Also regardless of whether or not the writers were aware the HRH initials on the luggage does stand for Her/His Royal Highness while in the case of the King or Queen it would likely be HMTQ or HMTK (their Majesty the King or Queen, never royal majesty), the queen also wouldn’t be in a carriage for any reason other than a state event but this the Simpsons and we need that cartoon logic. as far as Royal shows go there’s a Swedish show called “Young Royals” about what if there was an “openly” Gay prince? As well as the Netflix family soap drama “The Crown” which is basically a condensed and highly dramatic telling of the life of Elizabeth II, having seen the show, I call it prestige fluff cause it’s basically what you would expect, high production value, all-Star cast ranging from Claire Foy, Olivia Coleman, Imelda Staunton (from Chicken Run), Vanessa Kirby, Emma Corrin, & John Lithgow (who absolutely chews the scenery when he can). If you ever want to watch just one season watch season 4, it’s got probably the best writing, and acting performances as well. It’s got Olivia Colman at the top of her game while also introducing Princess Diana, and Margret thatcher played by Gillian Anderson also at the top of her game. It’s definitely not for everyone though but if you like high drama it’s a good watch. Honestly the takeaway I got from it was “wow this crown is eve ruining Royal lives and no one even wants it.” Even with character exclaiming how much better their lives would be without the crown, while also having a self indulgent Charles sympathy tour 🙄 in the later seasons. That being said there’s also a great YouTube video called “I hate the royals but I can’t stop watching the Crown” I’d also recommend.

Robert Flaxman

I definitely remember “jerk” from the recorded version we had on a tape, and I’m pretty sure that was the first-run airing. (The dubbing was always bad.) The “bitch” line is worse in about every way and I totally agree with you guys that it sounds exactly like something Peter Griffin would say. Bizarre they restored it.

Luke Gordnier

Speaking of Harry Potter, the we hate movies commentary tracks on the first four movies are great and well worth subscribing to their Patron.

Dan Hughes

Did you ever watch any episodes of pheonix nights? Be very interesting to hear what you make of it .

As a Catholic, I wanted to chime in and say that Mother Theresa was evil, and if she's a saint, the bar for sainthood is so low it's "next to Dinosaur bones" as Mr. Plinkett would say.

The background music that accompanies Abe shipping out is the piece, Mars, from Holst’s composition, The Planets. Often used to this day as a prelude to war/middle of battle accompaniment as befits the god of war.

The first time I went to London will always be defined by two events. The Queen died the day I got in and then my wife and I found out we were pregnant. Awfully surreal. And in “Tyler M knows all about Bob’s hometown” I’m definitely going to have to check out the former Arthur Treacher’s in Boardman because I loved the one in the Beaver Valley Mall so much as a kid.

Rory

Let me put on my genius at work shirt for a moment to point out this isn't the first time they went to the UK as they said near the start, because in Monty Can't Buy Me Love they went to Scotland to catch the Loch Ness Monster. Much as I wish Scotland wasn't part of the UK. Enough of this Scotland erasure!

Shawn Frieler

Deaths from fist fights are often from head injuries while hitting the ground. Most of us are not like Homer and able to take multiple head shots.

Eric Schuman

this episode is mostly a drag but your conversation got me thinking: the only time i've come across a notable amount of money on the ground was almost a decade ago. i found $50 on the sidewalk on my way home from work, and less than a week later that same $50 covered the adoption fee for my cat. one of those hundreds of still-existing hard rock cafes is in center city philadelphia, about a 20 minute bike ride from my house. for some reason i've been there twice and one of those times (a birthday, maybe?) my grandparents asked for the music to be turned down. i've never been to england (only EPCOT) but i'm a big fan of british snacks. the candy bar fillings tend to be more creative than american candy, especially crunchie, lion, and double decker. if there's a world market in your area you can usually find them there.

I have an 8 year old daughter and thankfully she's yet to enter a Harry Potter phase. In fact, I've been both amazed and proud that my kid has resisted any popular franchise or brand; from my generation or hers! Thankfully, she'll occasionally join me in enjoying some of my old favorites. She watches Star Trek: Lower Decks with me and we saw Transformers One in the theaters together... Oh, and she does legitimately love the Simpsons. But, with the exception of a year or two of Pokémon, she's yet to claim one as part of her identity. Her main passion is nature and animals, which thankfully are things that no multimedia conglomerate can lock behind a vault or pay wall, destroy in a tax write-off fire, or blanket everything we see with licensed marketing... Yet.

As a Britisher this episode holds a special place in my heart and I still find it really funny for the most part. It was a big deal at the time, I remember them talking about this on the children's news TV show newsround as it was how I heard about it. I think holds up for the most part especially compared to a lot of 'tv show goes to England' which can be insufferable if done wrong. One additional piece of trivia the London bus they're on has it's destination as Aldwych which is a closed underground station that is commonly used in tv and and film. On the cancelled guest stars at least Blair is funny and has some charisma, JK Rowling is just boring

Nick Mould

I remember this episode premiering in Britain and it having a very muted response, with Tony Blair's appearance being considered a low point. No one I know who saw it thought it was much cop, and that any inaccuracies were too lame to really be offensive. That said, I do think it's a bit rich for US media to mock Britain as a country that publicly executes dangerous drivers, when the reality is that capital punishment was abolished in Britain in the 1960s and the US state still routinely murders convicted criminals. That said, there is a significant amount of public support here for reinstating the death penalty. Somewhat notably, this episode was trailed on the British cable channel (Murdoch owned) Sky One with its full episode title, which I don't think ever happened with new episodes, before or since.

Man. I hate to do it, but I think you guys really need to move beyond hating the Harry Potter books. Not liking the books isn't a moral win, the vast majority of people who read them and love them understand JK is awful and problematic and don't financially support her at all, and it's not a stretch to say millions of people are better from the books. Plus, it's fun reading that is perfect for kids and teenagers! It helped turn me into the hungry reader I still am today! I guess at the end of the day, the books aren't problematic just because a YouTuber condensed all of JKs weird issues into an hour and a half. There's a reason its neighbors with Springfield, and there's a reason it's continued to stick around outside of the movies.

I'm a younger millennial, around 9 when Harry Potter got hot hitting grade school. I wasn't allowed to read it. It was one of the few things my divorced devote religious parents agreed on. So that forced me to read every other book available in the school library and to this day I'm amazed by how many folks my age have not read literally any other books aside from that and what our English teachers assigned to us. Looking back i think that's why I ended up becoming a weird Dune nerd. I eventually ended up reading a book and a half of Harry Potter as a teenager and couldn't finish. It was just a whole lot of "ehh". I also watched this episode live with my dad, whose only contribution to my life was to introduce me to my love of cartoons, and I remember him making shitty misogynistic remarks about Rowling. Flash forward to today, my distant father attempting to relate to me by reccing me the new hbo show coming up. He's not internet literate enough to know JK's politics, but it still tickles me. My southern conservative father attempted to relate to his trans gay son by bringing up Harry Potter and pretending to not remember when I reminded him that he banned me from even touching the books. (Bc demons could transfer from the books to my body and haunt our house. Oh yes, he was that kind of religious. ) Anyway, this was nice to listen to on my Wednesday back to work. I was already crying a lot that day and this brightened up my day. Thank you, guys. Thank you, Bob, for being a true ally. Thank you, Henry, for not being one of those cis gay assholes that sell trans people out. Thank you to both of yall for advocating for the trans community in small cartoony ways. I truly appreciate yall.

Boy JS sure went out with a whoopee cushion.

Late to this one, last week wasn’t very fun. Anyway, American over here in the UK, The Telegraph is a right wing rag, and is never good so you’re right to drag it

The Author Who Shall Not Be Named sadly brought so much of this on themselves (yes I am intentionally misgendering that bigot). Harry Potter first came out when I was in graduate school, so I only observed the phenomenon from the outside. I'm a school librarian today (first K-8 and now high school) and kids of all ages still love it. I make a point of NOT shelving it under their name of course. Most recently I had the honor of being cast in a play called Puffs, a bawdy Harry Potter parody that focuses on what happens to the students who aren't the chosen one. I'd say half the cast was LGBTQ in one way or another and Harry was played by a trans male. He wrote this amazing and hysterical monologue as he described his youth "living in a closet" undet the stairs but now he feels freer to be his true self including learning the spell "titticus deleticus". It brought the house down and was such a fitting thumb in the eye for JKR (since this was a parody they didn't get one red gold coin from the show either)

Harrods is a fun store to go to as a kid because you get to play the game of “find the most expensive item” and pretend to want to buy it. A bit of connective lore, but much of the sexual abuse allegations, were perpetrated by the former owner Mohammed Al Fayed who has very colourful lore behind him, much of which is shown in The Crown, seeing as he’s the father of Dodi, who died with Diana in the crash. I guess you can connect him to the episode stark raving dad as well because he once had a statue of Michael Jackson built and displayed at Fulham FC stadium.
