"I'm sure no one's ever said this before, but I must get to Philadelphia as quickly as possible!" - Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth

When Farnsworth discovers a colonial ancestor betrayed America and disgraced his moderately good name, the Planet Express crew sips some time travel juice and heads back to right what went wrong. But this trip to the past ends up altering the future in ways both unimagined and European.

The problem with the party in the Hall of Presidents was that all of the heads needed to be presidents. We couldn’t just use Jonathan Frakes’ or Matt Groening’s heads. There were only 44 presidents at that point, but the hall is big and has to be filled up. In the past we would only show small sections, but for a party we had to fill it up. Matt likes to say “just do it they did Dumbo! They didn’t show any crowds in Dumbo!,” but in this scene the lights are on. So we have to see the heads. I think we did go through our incidental character designs and turn some of their heads into presidents heads. For the names, I have to imagine we asked the writers for a list, but I guess they said to just make them up. This puzzles me because they are usually really good about that. Lists of video game names, future tv show names, etc, they really deliver with those. But I guess that didn’t happen here. We know better than to put ourselves or friends into shows, so if the director says they made them up, then they made them up. Thank god no presidents had to have tears in that scene.

A solid Boston-centric sign gag in this one is the reference to The Big Dig, a project infamous for how long and overbudget it ran. Its origins trace back to the early 80s, but construction began in '91 and didn't finish until 2007 so it was a frequent punching bag and often cited as an example of government waste and/or incompetence. It actually turned out pretty well though as the whole idea was to put through traffic under the city to make accessing the airport or Cape Cod easier. The downside is the state put basically all of the debt created by it on the public transit system which is still an issue and the tunnels had some faulty ceiling panels which did fall and kill a person. A lot of the areas above the tunnel and in the city proper were refashioned into parks so it's been a nice addition for the city and the state and ultimately the type of thing I am fine with my tax dollars going towards as opposed to weapons and such. I had the same conclusion as Henry regarding his assessment of why they needed the extra opal dust: a lick takes you back for a moment, while a super-concentrated dose can last a day. I agree that the episode is way overstuffed and while there are some good gags, I tend to always forget the ending. And that's because it doesn't have one. Every time I rewatch it I forget the resolution until I see it again. It is a joke, but one that doesn't land as it really doesn't feel like a planned ending and really does seem like something that was born out of necessity. And from the land of parents with kids, mine still learn about colonial America and the Revolutionary War. It's a big part of how the US is romanticized by history so I don't think that will ever go away. They do know who Paul Revere is, but we also live in Massachusetts so that could easily have something to do with it. My own memories of US History education growing up in New Hampshire is it often ended with Watergate. The first semester ended with the Civil War and the second opened with Reconstruction. So much time would be spent on World War II though that we would mostly speed run past Korea and Vietnam with little time to discuss the 80s. I would guess now the goal of history teachers is to make it to 9/11.

I’m afraid that none of the “British “ accents are any good - nobody speaks like that old timey or not

Henry recounting his school experiences reminded me that a lot of kids I knew came into the public school system in junior high and high school from a local Christian school because of wanting to do sports or just that Christian school not really having much in the way of offerings for those ages. And boy, I heard all kinds of nonsense about how Darwin renounced the theory of evolution on his deathbed (he didn't) and about how they had watched videos about abortion and stuff like that. These ideas were considered pretty insane by those of us who had gone to public school the whole time and didn't attend one of the many non demonimational churches in my town. But I did have one high school science teacher who specifically had to rebut some common lies propagated by the local religious institutions who had indoctrinated many a youth.

Can we get that list of classic married with children episodes? I don't know where to start when revisiting that series

I stuck to the first era of the show, since that's what we were covering: - Eatin' Out - 976-SHOE - Hot Off the Grill - We'll Follow the Sun - Peggy Turns 300

as a non-American, the bit about learning about this historical period from Day of the Tentacle is very relatable. I do recall seeing something about Ben Franklin and the whole electricity thing in some illustrated science book for kids, though. Or, maybe it was Animaniacs...

Bob, I'm afraid you're no longer allowed to live here since you don't know the Vancouver Olympics mascots. And how dare you call one of them a fox. Your bags are being packed

I don’t know where Pepe stands in 2026 but I do know that my own mother has bought TWO Pepe plushies for my nieces who love Pepe… I asked her if she had idea about Pepe and she proceeds to show me a meme page of the Pepe doll being sad in various scenarios. She didn’t have the faintest idea that it was ever political lol I just laughed and had to move on. It seems harmless enough by now.
