New Line Cinema had a massive—and, in retrospect, not at all surprising—hit on their hands with the first TMNT film, so it was time to strike while the iron was still as red as Raph's bandanna. And so, 1991 gave us The Secret of the Ooze: a sequel that promised to deliver more of the zany fun of the very popular animated series, and with fewer PG-rated curse words. While this focus makes it a lesser film, we still have to admit: they made some serious advancements in puppet mouth technology. On this special live-action edition of What A Cartoon Movie, join us as we raise our pizza slices in a toast to those four brothers who are lean, green, and once again on the screen.

Seeing this at the drive-in when I was almost 4 years old is a core memory that would lead me on a love affair with cinema that would give me my career. In retrospect, this movie is not very good, but I love the opening scene, and Shredder’s “Babies!” lives rent free in my head forever. As for the career, probably also a mistake 😅

I got to see Secret of the Ooze in the theater for the 35th anniversary. At the end of the movie I overheard a family in the row behind me ask their kid if he knew who the guy singing at the end of the movie was; he had no idea who Vanilla Ice is. I got a good chuckle out of that. Also there was a good amount of giggles in the theater when Splinter said he was coming.

As a fellow 40-something male, I have spent far too much of my life interacting with this franchise, and in particular, these movies so I am limiting myself to only one pedantic comment on this very well researched podcast. In the first movie, Leonardo actually does connect with his swords when fighting. It comes during the showdown with Shredder and the camera even zooms in on the strike as Leonardo lands a blow on Shredder's right arm causing him to reflexingly grab at it. It has stayed with me because I too was a Leonardo fanboy and him being the only turtle to actually deal Shredder a significant blow was ammo on the playground for why Leonardo was the best and why he'd absolutely win in a fight against his brothers. I will hear no other argument. And as a still self-proclaimed toy boy, I do feel inclined to comment on the pretty wonderful NECA action figures. They're actually not too bad price wise. Right now, I'm debating on if I should spend $85 on a Goku action figure preorder or learn how to live without it. The NECA figures, by comparison, have been around for 7 or 8 years and for most of that time were available as $50 sets of two. They're now $60 and up, but the stuff that's more expensive is probably secondhand as sets like that Professor Perry two-pack is no longer in production. The list of characters not covered by NECA at this point is pretty damn small, as you guys noted. The master toy license for the franchise was recently acquired by Mattel ending the deal Playmates has had since the franchise first blew up. When a master deal ends, usually all of the smaller ones do too so most assume the NECA license is up at the end of the year, but they haven't confirmed it. They have started liquidating some old product and had little to show at New York Toy Fair so the NECA line of turtles could be ending this year or soon after which makes me a little sad, but they really have few stones left to overturn (they even made fucking Danny). If it does come to pass, my wallet will celebrate such a development. Despite my love for this film as a kid and my current action figure collecting, I do not love this movie. It's for kids and mostly speaks down to them, not always literally, but just in how its shot which you captured well. My "hot take" these days is that I would rather watch TMNT III than this one because it's just a trainwreck - the kind I can't look away from. This movie is bad, but just in a conventional kids movie kind of way. The puppets are still wonderful though and hold up so well even in 4k.

Imagine my surprise to hear Greensboro, NC, my present place of residence for over 30 years, name dropped on the podcast

I have zero nostalgia for this film and the franchise as well. Gave it a watch...and all I gotta say is nostalgia is one hell of a powerful thing! Now I know how you guys felt watching Shrek 2. The circle of slop!

Hell yeah. I been waiting!! 🤘🏽

I too had all the "movie" action figures with the rubbery plastic as a child, and I played with them so much I broke most of them. I was very frustrated when playmates did a re-release a few years ago with the same or at least similar molds, but with the standard plastic. Just not the same.

Toronto… superdome? Sorry that hurt! It’s called Skydome! Or at least it was!

My favorite Cool As Ice fun fact is that the cinematographer was Janusz Kaminski (pre-Speilberg)

As someone from Sacramento area, I know exactly the old spaghetti factory Henry is talking about. It’s a place I definitely try to go when I’m back visiting family. In regard to sitting trolley, they’re not exclusive to a private event and you’re able to sit in them without a revelation if they’re open.

Appreciation post for Nina's perfect and succinct review for The Secret of the Ooze. I was 100 percent one of the babies this movie was made for. I remember the announcement for a second Turtles movie, and I was apprehensive. Even though the show and the toys were my life at the time, the first movie was borderline scary to me. I absolutely loved the sequel and watched the VHS over and over. It is an objectively bad movie, of course, but it definitely had me under its spell for a year or so.

The Donatello puppet did not break on Barbara Walter’s it functioned as wanted it was parodying people crying on those specials.
