Though talking animals were Disney's bread and butter for decades, the '90s Renaissance saw the studio backing away almost entirely from that still-viable idea. But then, 2016 gave us Zootopia, their first "animals in clothes" movie in 40 years, and one with a high-minded purpose: to point out prejudice in our world via a prey/predator allegory. While voters certainly didn't listen to this film's lesson, audiences showed up in droves, and even bigger droves for the sequel nine years later. On this month's What A Cartoon Movie, join us as we discuss the animated film that returned Disney to its past legacy and warped more minds than Gadget Hackwrench.

I think Idris Elba is a furry

I wasnt expecting so much furry talk right out of the gate, much less POSITIVE furry talk. What a treat!

Have you guys heard the fan headcannon about Gazelle being mtf trans? Apparently in real life, male gazelle’s horns are longer (like Gazelle’s in the movie) while female gazelles have shorter horns.

You guys were more right than you thought about the meaning behind Bellwether's name. The term originally described the sheep who would lead a flock with a bell around its neck!

One of those few animations i just havent wanted to watch. But hey im down to hear about it 💪

The issue service workers have with your phone number reciting isn't a matter of speed, it's that you're not following the commonly agreed-upon phone number rythym! (ex. 555 *pause* 55 *pause* 55)

I don't remember when I saw it, but I did sincerely enjoy Zootopia and your praise makes me want to see the sequel. And I agree wholeheartedly with Bob: I would love to see a truly ADULT animated feature with this kind of money... not a porn, or a Seth Rogen/Seth Green diarrhea fest, or some "indie" movie in an artsy-fartsy abstract/jarring style... a straightforward film with a PG-13/R rating with Zootopia money (or a facsimile) done looking like a traditional U.S. animated movie. The Incredibles got close. I think Ralph Bakshit was trying accomplish that, but he was too nuts to do so.

The brief aside regarding Japanese interest in Afros reminded me of the Sgt. Frog ending song "Afro Gunsou" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVPXT0bgzw0 And while Zootopia doesn't get into it, Beastars -does- get into interspecies mating. There's a plot about a serial killer that's a half breed. From the Beastars wiki: Melon is a half-breed, as his mother is a leopard and his father is a gazelle. He has the general appearance of a gazelle with the jaws, claws, and eyes of a leopard. He wears a surgical mask in public to hide his fangs and the leopard spots on his face. Most of the time, he keeps his eyes closed.

Thank you, because of this i finally watched the movie (and its sequel, and the disney+ series) and it was cool

Personally I believe that Judy has had an I'm with Her bumper sticker on her car for the last ten years but voted for Trump three times in a row. And Nick is not a registered voter.

The bootleg movie scene reminded me of the 2022 chip n dale movie. That might be a good movie to cover in the future

And... I did just watch the sequel, and agree again (!) with Bob... it's even better. They're getting so close to that "real" adult animated movie, it's scary. But - it will never happen.

It is funny that in this podcast about a movie about unconscious and cultural racism, Henry drops an ethnic slur. "Welshing" is in the exact same category as "gypping", "jewing", and "indian giving", and it's not exactly a great thing to say.

The sloth scene in the film is a bit similar to the scam Football gambling hotline Homer calls in “Lisa the Greek”, an episode coincidentally also directed by Rich Moore.

During my rewatch I kept expecting the plot beat of the lion mayor dulling his fangs to soften his image. It wasn't until halfway through I realized Bestars was throwing me for a loop.
