We've reached the end of the month, which means it's time for another episode of our community podcast! As usual, we're behind the eight-ball when it comes to Comic Con news, but we still have plenty to talk about, like Fox's fall schedule, Emmy nominations, streaming season premieres, and more. And, as always, we read and respond to your questions and comments from the last round of podcasts. It's all happening on Talk to the Audience: the podcast that paralyzes you with rage... and island rhythms!

Simpsley!!

Alex Irish

I was hoping with covering Mighty Mouse, you were going to cover “The Ice Goose Cometh” instead because that’s a secret proto Ren and Stimpy episode, but the one you’re covering is about as good a choice. Also, between this and the Zootopia podcast this week, are you guys implying you’re covering Minions for an upcoming What a Cartoon Movie podcast in September?

Thad Komorowski

Hopefully you guys pulled notes from my book, as the John K version of that particular cartoon’s origins is mostly BS. (though I am positive you knew that…) Various machinations got a package of Terrytoons airing on MeTV Toons, the first time they’ve been seen anywhere in 35 years at least. They mostly look awful, taken from ‘80s 1/4 inch masters - EXCEPT the Bakshi Mighty Mouse, which actually got an HD restoration two decades ago for the DVD release. It’s a shame that for being maybe the most important TV cartoon ever, it’s mostly unwatchable. I’ve been getting more laughs out of the Taz-Mania reruns MeTV Toons has, even. There are some gems, mostly in the way of proto-R&S concepts, but I’m always amazed when people say they prefer it to say, R&S. It’s utter incoherence on almost every level.

Omg so funny that the donut soap reeked lol

Alex Irish

It’s amazing how many episodes of Bakshi Mighty Mouse are just clip shows, and of the Terrytoons shorts, no less

Thad Komorowski

Seeing those Jim Tyer clips in HD makes me long for a curated REAL Terrytoon restoration collection…

Thad Komorowski

“Simpsley” was very good. “Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition” is as bad as anything, and the Dark Knight segment may be one of the worst things they have ever done (why use Homer at all if he’s going to be completely unrecognizable?).

I'm one of those three that has Shibuya Scramble, unplayed of course.

Also, the Denshattack! OST is amazing.

As a fellow wife guy, I gotta say that Bob left out the most important part of his soap review: What did Nina say?

I have a bad sense of smell so I can't detect it on him, but the soap itself smells nice

Stacey P

Yes Shibuya Scramble! My partner played it on PS4 and it was so much fun.

QUESTIONS: I have two questions for Bob and Henry Question 1: How do you request episodes for What a Cartoon? I would really like you to go over The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy episode “Keeper of the Reaper”. It’s one of my favorite episodes and it’s a great time. Also, Maxwell Atoms likes to do podcasts, so it would be amazing if you could get him on to talk about the episode Question 2: Are you going to go over any of the Sonic films for your live action What a Cartoon movie? One of the writers of the film Josh Miller hosts Best Movies Never Made podcast and again, would be cool if you could get him to come on your podcast to talk about it. Thanks!

Bob sir, maybe you’re already a fan of his work but Jim Thompson actually invented a Dexter/Mr. Ripley like guy in 1951 “The Killer Inside me” is very good but all of Jim Thompson’s noir books are good Pop 1280 highly recommend it! I’m finishing up my last unread Pynchon but im hoping to dive more into pulp next if you have any recommendations

Bob Mackey

I've read nearly all of Thompson (and own most of his books), and The Killer Inside Me isn't one of my favorites—but I LOVE Pop. 1280. If you're looking for another great pulp writer, try David Goodis.

Pop. 1280 is my favorite of his, im not huge on Yorgos but wanna see that adaptation he was working on badly! Those pulp cover ones of Thompsons are the ones im collecting too, they’re so cool looking just got The Grifters one yesterday, I will look into David Goodis next thanks!

Talking Simpsons

1: We ended the listener pick tier on Patreon, but there's a chance it could come back in some way. And Billy and Mandy is definitely something we've overlooked on WAC... 2: Sonic films are always a possibility! - Bob

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!!!

I recommend Time Travelers, also written and directed by Jiro Ishii. There finally is a fan translation available (3DS).
