We're briefly disrupting our season one revisit because our pals Chapo Trap House, Matt Christman and Virgil Texas are in the studio live! We love doing politics episodes with these nice folks, so we decided to just cover the political comedy of four classic episodes of The Simpsons. We cover the electioneering impact of three-eyed fish, deficit rags, electoral fraud, and third parties against space aliens, so listen now!!

Glad to see you guys caught them during their visit. I need this tonight...what a horrible, depressing night.

Alex Irish

Well this is a pleasant surprise

(Writing this pre-having listened) Before you guys might catch any flack for this surprise interjection episode, the Chapo crew have been great guests in the past and this gives us an excuse to revisit four classic episodes, so it's A-OK with me. Plus IMO 'Call of the Simpsons' is a very mehhhhhhhh episode anyway. -- Post-Listen Edit: As I expected, super fun episode. It's very unfortunate how pedestrian and frustrating the Simpsons' politics have gotten. There was questionable elements of their views even in the golden years, certainly, but I feel like they were at least present in much more subtle and everyday ways, so even when it was takes that weren't funny or I disagree with, it wasn't THE point of many episodes, which feels very different in the Trump era. Good points were made about them not wanting to tackle Bush because of not knowing if he was popular is a bad excuse AND that it might help those episodes age better because of it. It's expected with anything/anyone if enough time goes on, but it just sucks to see the Simpsons be so out of touch with everything - from episodes where Burns complains about "SJWs" "ruining" Yale (and the show seeming to agree with him) to not getting why The Squad is popular & dislikes Trump.

Agree they are nice guests, even if I don't agree that Bernie is the be-all and end-all. After Super Tuesday it's clear I'm not the only one.

"When are they going to get to the fireworks factory?!"

Healthy parasocialite checking-in!

Everyone’s ready for a brain full of stew right?

Jimmy James running for president on NewsRadio is my favorite millionaire/billionaire running for political office story in a sitcom. His motives weren’t evil he was just lonely. Bless the Harts and Duncanville are both fine, and I hope people give them a chance. I wouldn’t put either up against the best episodes of American Dad yet, but they are better than any episode of something like Bordertown.

PublickEye

Best Chapo crossover so far, you caught them on good form. A very timely tonic...

I’m sorry but I REALLY don’t like Matt. I admit I am also not a fan of new shows now too, but when Henry and Virgil acknowledge new Simpsons has good jokes and he doesn’t respond, and also saying the new Riverdale is something “those idiots watch.” Dude, get over yourself, people are allowed to like new things and that doesn’t make them bad or dumb people.

Samuel Roberts

I'm all for you guys putting season 1/11 on pause for themed episodes. You mentioned how no one asked you to do a list of the best Simpsons episodes in time for Disney Plus - but that could be a whole miniseries of great episodes.

Joshua Bjork

Great episode! I wouldn’t mind more of these themed or more timely episodes if the occasion comes up, especially as it will allow you guys to revisit episodes that I’m more familiar with as the show continues.

I didn't have a lot of fun with this retrospective primarily cause I think the Chapo guys dominated the conversation and often they have talking points they usually hit nihilistic brick walls. I really like some of their appearances like for the Frank Grimes episode, but they similarly deconstructed the podcast in a similar way by talking about the pointlessness of Simpsons canon, going back and forth between reveling The Simpsons as the last bastion of culture then mocking other media people like, saying how lonely people would be better with good podcasts hosts in their lives. IIRC, I thought Bob/Henry weren't fans of the episode of Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington but I'm guessing they've reassessed it? I really really enjoy when you all talk about politics in The Simpsons universe as it represents the 90s but I feel like the Chapo style of humor and seething irony doesn't quite work so much for me.

Was going to watch Manchester by the Sea at the weekend, a Simpsons political podcast saved me the time apparently.

Matt and Virgil are really among your top guests and always come in with a fun perspective on the episodes you discuss. Hearing like a two-minute digression as Henry tries to parse out the 1996 Republican primary calendar against animation lead times and have everyone else enthusiastically chime in is the ultimate expression of the Talking Simpsons/Chapo team-up.

Animals in Motion

Love Matt and Virgil. Yes yes, they talk too much and dominate the conversation, that's what you get with the Chapo guys.

Hey guys, Bless The Harts isn't produced by Bento Box. It's produced by Titmouse. It's the next Phil Lord and Chris Miller animated Fox property post-Son of Zorn. The deal with the show may have pre-dated the Disney/Fox merger, not a 100% sure. BUT, always exciting to hear Matt and Virgil on the pod!

Dagan Fish

I just wanted to say as someone who is a bit to the right of your political views that I never get tired of hearing your discussions on the subject! It is great to me, being from the mid west, to hear your different views. Don't ever stop! I don't care if we agree or not I will always be here to listen!

This was a really great episode! An unexpected treat that helped dull the pain of waiting in line to vote for two and a half hours (they said there would be snacks inside; there were no snacks), Biden subsequently winning Super Tuesday (but not California! 🎉 Proud of my state at least), and then receiving some minor medical news that made me freak out disproportionately all day. More like this in the future would be most welcome.

I look forward to hearing the Chapo boys again on the future pod about the 2004ish episode where Krusty runs for Congress as a Republican. Hoo boy. (Although maybe that era's more in the Michael and Us guys' wheelhouse)

Bill Fergus

I love this episode! I loved both the theme and the guest. Chapo Trap House is one of my favorite guests and it was great to hear them get to talk about all the different political episodes.

Like 96% sure the video essay that Briahna Joy Gray mentioned on the fall of the Simpsons was the excellent SuperEyepatchWolf analysis.
