We return to the ever-growing DC Animated Universe with a request from Royce, one of our top Patreon subscribers! Yes, more powerful than a locomotive, it's Superman: The Animated Series! We talk about the Kryptonian's origins, how the show spun out of Batman, and how it paved the way for many DC toons to follow. Then we break down the season 2 episode Heavy Metal, which introduced the hero Steel to Metropolis, so up, up and away, mild-mannered listener!!

The 👏 mighty 👏 hercules 👏 podcast 👏 now

My favorite Lex Luthor moment in any DCAU is the Justice League Unlimited episode where Superman just goes "Lex remember that Kryptonite you carry around?" "Yea it kills you lol" "It's still radioactive Lex..." "... THIS IS YOUR FAULT!"

I stand firm on my stance that "Mullet Superman" was the best Superman look.

ShyRanger

To Henry and Bob and anyone else reading this. If you haven’t seen it yet already I strongly recommend you listen to the Superman episode of Matthew Jay’s deep end podcast. It is an amazing breakdown of all the best qualities of Superman and basically explains how every “ Problem“ brought up about writing for Superman is either writers not being creative or businessman not being understanding

In regards to Supermans ever increasing strength: I remember watching one of the Justice League OVAs where there was some sort threat heading towards earth (a giant missile or beam of energy perhaps, my memory is hazy) and I made the tongue-in-cheek remark "why doesn't superman just push the earth out of the way". moments later superman fucking said "Maybe I could move the earth out of the way." to which Batman explains why thats a terrible idea.

ShyRanger

Hey Henry, sorry but one more comment. I can’t believe I am saying this but I am actually going to side with the “fuchin’ people that bought out Superman from Seagle and Shoester.” You, along with others including me at one point, probably assume that the buying out of Superman probably occurred like any story of corporate fat cats intentionally screwing over the little guy. Well not exactly. For one, the creators were ALWAYS trying to create a successful character they could sell, it is why they had a couple failed attempts before. They weren’t trying to make their own success they were trying to do well enough to be successful enough that they could sell. And since Superman was successful ENOUGH, that’s why DC bought for the price they. Nobody could predict he would be THIS famous now, not back then. Now SHOULD DC have paid them more going forward, maybe, but as far as that original buyout is concerned, I argue everything was legit.

DCAU Lex is still the best! Was I the only one who thought he was black growing up?

Lunatics Unleashed is my most anticipated episode of ‘What a Cartoon’ I love AU shit.

NervousWrex

Loonatics Unleashed had a surprisingly huge impact on my life. I've never actually watched the show but I did make a flash cartoon parody of it called "A New Bunny" that for some reason got bizarrely popular for the time; it led to, among other things, a ton of comedy writing and animation opportunities and a relationship that went on for two and half years. I'm bringing it up because today happens to be its 15 year anniversary. If I ever manage to grab one of those $50 patron spots Loonatics will probably be my first request, which I would like to apologize in advance for.

Fredison

Really looking forward to World's Finest when you guys get around to it!

Pedantic correction: Only the first few seasons of the George Reeves series were in black-and-white, the later seasons were filmed in colour.

I've never been much into Superman. As a kid, I did like the first three movies and had Superman pajamas and all of the usual stuff. This show just didn't click for me. I never gave it a real, extended, look, but it illustrates for me that what I enjoy so much about BTAS is the tone and look of that show. It's partially why The New Batman Adventures isn't as enjoyable for me as the Fox years, though there are still some high quality episodes there (Over the Edge, Mad Love). The only other time Superman was ever on my radar was during the highly publicized Death and Return era. That's when I bought my one, lone, Superman action figure. Yes, he had a mullet and since all of my other action figures by then were mostly Marvel, he didn't fit in and I kind of regretted my purchase. I still have it though. Totally agree though on clip intros vs dedicated new animation intros. With BTAS, I think it was a bit of a cheat though as, if I'm not mistaken, the original intro is actually the test footage they did to sell the program to the network, just edited differently. The full version is on the first DVD release and it's been awhile since I've gone back and had a look. Regardless of how it came about, it's awesome and a huge part of that show. I never understood why they dropped it in favor of a clip intro for The Adventures of Batman and Robin, other than they really felt like it was important to re-brand the show with nobody's favorite hero, Robin. I also don't really care for the really long Superman/Batman intro. That thing takes forever! Thankfully, the physical release of BTAS lets you choose which intro you want so you can basically ignore that one all together.

Two things, it was never intended as a mullet, only bad artists drawing it that way (Dan Jurgens has a lots of rants on twitter about it) And, you while you briefly touched on it, Lois and Clark was on tv before this started and concurrently with this series, and was a pretty popular show, for the early seasons (around 20 million viewers to tanking to about 4 in the last season) so it wasn’t like Superman wasn’t around in popular media. True the show has a black mark now mostly because Dean Cain sucks.. but.. it was there

Bennett Billard

Buck Rodgers, btw. That's what you were trying to remember.

Ah, the Mighty Hercules. Just to show how deprived I and my fellow GenXers had it when it came to quality cartoons in our youth compared with you Millenial whipper snappers with your Steven Spielberg cartoons and Batman TAS. Atrocious writing and animation aside, Mighty Hercules did have a catchy theme song with some wonderfully subversive homoerotic lyrics slipped in as the male singer praises Hercules "Softness in eyes / iron in this thighs / virtue in his heart / fire in every part of The Mighty HERCULES!" https://youtu.be/laoBvt9CcQo to show I'm not making this up.

Hey guys-- I wanted to confirm that the Bruce Timm post you found was almost definitely the real deal. I'm assuming the post was from Toon Zone? Timm used to post there during the Justice League days. He would come into the the new episode thread and give his insights and actually interact with the community as b.t. It felt incredibly special to be a sixteen year old animation nerd on a pretty close knit community and having one of your heroes, Timm, come in and discuss. I think it was for a time, the only place where that cancelled Batman Beyond sequel had been discussed. The main way I know it was probably him is kind of roundabout! There was someone else on the Justice League production team who posted anonymously, but would provide really clear hints for future episodes that always came to fruition. So, if b.t. was an imposter, I feel like the other dude would have called him out on it.

This cartoon is so damn good and all of that behind the scenes stuff that's unconfirmed (planned as a tie-in to Superman Lives and forced to push Steel before WB abandoned giving that movie a chance in hell) would make a lot of sense. I'm glad that Timm & co. decided to take a stab at Superman after doing Batman, rather than just jumping right into more of the Caped Crusader, but it sucks that these days Superman is always second fiddle to Batman and doesn't really get his day in the sun anymore. At least we have Supergirl and Superman on TV - and I personally love that universe overall, even if the shows have had their low points (like anything, really). -- Livewire is fucking awesome and one of my favourite DC rogues, so I'll be forever thankful to this show for creating her. The Batgirl/Supergirl team up in the BTAS revival where they fight Livewire, Harley, and Ivy is a lot of fun and I was glad to see the Supergirl show bring Livewire into the fold during the first three seasons. I never realized Mercy was a creation for the show too - to me it always just made sense that Lex would have her around.
