We return to the Gundam franchise this week, and we're joined by Gundam expert/USG Editor-In-Chief/our good friend Kat Bailey! 20 years ago this year Gundam Wing premiered on Cartoon Network and had a huge impact on US anime fans, but how did this variation on the Gundam franchise happen? How did it get broadcast on TV? And what's its legacy? We discuss all that and the first episode in this gundanium-enriched podcast!

Man I love Gundam

SomeBloke

Gundam Wing has the rather dubious position of holding a special place in my heart for getting me hooked on mecha while simultaneously being a show I don’t like revisiting because I became a Universal Century snob. They definitely picked the right incarnation of the show to try to break into the American mainstream, though, even if in retrospect the real motives were rather obvious with all of those ads for “action figure model kits.”

Ah, Gundam Wing! My first exposure not only to the Gundam franchise but also to Gundam model kits aka Gunpla. While I’ve really dug my heels into the Universal Century, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Wing. Duo was my favorite and in 2002 I not only got to meet Scott McNeil at a convention but I also got him to sign something Duo and Rattrap from Beast Wars for me AND he did the voices...which is basically the same voice but still cool.

I want to give a shoutout to the dub's narrator, voiced by Campbell Lane. He has a distinctive voice that makes me wish he had been in more shows (he played Skeletor in "The New Adventures of He-Man"...a show I had no idea had existed until today). There's a compilation on Youtube of just his narration (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7OSeEMxDKE), and I put together this edit of all the times he says "However" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSdVtQTe0RM), which is how I hear the word whenever I see it.

Kat basically summed up my affection for this program when she said (paraphrasing) she has fond memories, but never wants to revisit Gundam Wing. I've only revisited it in spurts since it aired on Toonami and it's just so bad and ridiculous. It's very "Power Rangers" or Ronin Warriors not only in some of the aesthetics of the Gundams, but also in how there is a lot of build-up to a confrontation that basically ends in seconds with just a showing of power. I think there's some better battles towards the end, especially when the Epyon comes in, but I'm not going to sit through 40 episodes to get there. The legacy of this show is great Gundam designs (especially the Endless Waltz versions) and some notable flair mixed with mostly trash story-telling. May I also propose that rather than do a WAC on The 08th MS Team just make it a choice in the next limited series vote. It might be the best Gundam story and since it was a short series some serious money was spent making it look fantastic. I know Bob is pining for some Duckman and more King of the Hill, but lets get some anime in there!

Wow did that theme song take me back to high school when Wing and Dragon Ball Z was airing endless reruns on YTV after school. I have what my friends call “potential web energy” now, but back in those days I was all in, watching dubbed anime after school and wearing overly large print shirts with Vegeta on them from Randy River.

With regards to you all speculating on how Sunrise takes Wing as the most popular Gundam in America, there's actually a fun little nod to it in Gundam Build Fighters where the American Gundam Build Fighters champion uses a Tallgeese and is specifically the right age to where he would have been a kid watching it on Toonami.

I remember Gundam Wing debuting on Toonami and it was a revelation to me as a junior high kid. I'd watched reruns of Robotech and that kind of thing, but the tone of Gundam Wing was so different from anything else I was watching at the time. The overly serious tone of the show is funny to look back on now, but to me at the time, it seemed so sophisticated. I especially loved the little prologue sequences where the narrator would fill you in on what had happened previously. The music they used to start off was especially alluring to me, for whatever reason. Like with any Gundam show, I feel like the backdrop is ultimately more interesting than the show itself. I found myself always more curious about the circumstances around which the story events took place. Maybe that's just me, but so happy you did an episode on this. I think there are tons of people who find the show extremely nostalgiac, even if it doesn't hold up as well as some other Gundam series.

2026-09-07 10:00 I really loved this episode! Thanks! I'm a big Gundam fan, and I really do enjoy Wing. Bob's comentary on Zechs was quite funny - and, I've since watched episodes 2 & 3. More of that time with Zechs quality to it. The first episode is so utterly confusing, though. Still great fun!

I was OBSESSED with Gundam Wing in my teens. I first saw it on Toonami and I loved it. I tried to rewatch it recently and it flaws felt a bit more glaring, but it's still a fun nostalgia trip that has continues to have its moments.
