We've finally reached the end of our Mission Hill podcast journey with the very touching series finale. A burgeoning love of cinema (inspired by perversions) causes Kevin to find a new friend in Wally, and he soon receives a silver screen education under his neighbor's wing. But when Kevin discovers Wally made a movie of his own decades earlier, we learn about the shoddy art that brought him and his grumpy love together back in Red Scare America. It's a touching little tale that shows off the kind of series Mission Hill could be if it saw more than one season, and special guest Matthew Jay (of [the deep end] and Cartoons 101) joins us to discuss it and our own love of movies!

But that's not all—be sure to stay tuned for next week, as we wrap up this mini-series with an in-depth look at the fully written episodes that were never produced.

Count Blah ruled. He couldnt say " 'aight" which was a very of its time phrase, god I miss the early 2000s. every time he fucked up trying to say it he would say "blah". AEEEIGHT BLAH DAMN IT!

As odd as it is to end Mission Hill here, it does act as a great segue into Wally & Gus' spin-off.

Really appreciate this retrospective for finally getting me to give Mission Hill its due diligence. It was kind of a rocky watch for me at first, but the final few episodes were so good that's it's frustrating to think it got cut off just as it began firing consistently on all cylinders. Well, actually, I guess it really got cut off before it could even do that. Executives suck. I love the twist they put on this one. I think there's a lazier version of this script where Wally is just a bad director in the classic Ed Wood vein, or they make a lazy comment about critics not being good at making art (sort of like how Roger Ebert actually did write a terrible script). Making it instead about Wally and Gus' relationship makes his eventual acceptance that at least his film brings people joy really touching. And where a lesser show might have opted to cut some of the ending sweetness, the decision to simply linger on it and only have a light visual gag about Gus' handwriting really makes it that much more poignant.

Jim kind of looks like he's cosplaying Jigen when he goes to the movies

Is this the only time that we hear Gus’s last name, Duncz? I forgot it was pronounced like Gus Dunch and his diner is Gus Lunch.

the comic continuation of invader zim has the perfect response for beardo.

If I only could not care, but nooooo! You make me care. Whether I like it or not. You want to be left to your stupid business, but every chance you get, you think everyone, you think I have to hear about that business. Don’t you?

April

I thought Beardo was based on Harry Knowles.

No It Doesn't

I get goosebumps whenever I hear past Bob and Henry wish for more Mission Hill not knowing the reboot announcement is coming in the future. Especially when Henry correctly predicts the time setting of Mission Hill being in 2000 if it were to continue!

I lived near a Hollywood Video growing up so two of my friends worked there as their first jobs. That's long gone now but one of the best video stores still exists and it's called Movie Madness, here in Portland.

I was late to The Room phenomenon but I did see a screening of it a couple years ago where my girlfriend and I met Tommy Wiseau and even bought a pair of his underwear that he was selling (non-worn).

So I experienced a bit of a Gus and Wally's Plan 9 screening a couple years ago. My wife and I went to a pretty packed Cinefamily Jem and the Holograms event that had the creator and cast. They screened an episode and the crowd busted out laughing derisively at the plot, linereads, animation errors and... I don't think the creator and cast were fully aware of how ironic the enjoyment of Jem was... They seemed a little caught off-guard, my wife and I felt really bad! IIRC, the guy who voiced Rio didn't stick around much after the episode screening ended. The rest of the crew was very gracious though and seemed to have a decent time after that. My wife does genuinely love Jem for its aesthetic, music, and the unintentional goofiness is only a cherry on top for her. Thank you guys again for doing such a fantastic runthrough of Mission Hill, easily my favorite animated series. Here's hoping for the spinoff to get picked up! I can't wait for next week's episode on the back-5 of Season 1!!! The animatic of Episode 16 was excellent! That snippet of Ep 15 was great too. I remembered LOVING the scripts when I read them on that old Mission Hill tripod fansite. I still have the Kevium poster they sold! Thanks again, and looking forward to whatever the next bonus series will be!

Like Bob, I also read the Disaster Artist and met Greg Sestero at the same place I met Tommy Wiseau, at the Hollywood Theater in Portland. There were no underpants for sale this time so I settled for a Polaroid.

Want to echo others and say thanks for doing this series and giving me the push to finally watch this show. Honestly, I wasn’t really feeling it for the first half of the season, but those last few episodes were excellent and the show surely would’ve improved further had it been allowed to continue. Such a shame. Looking forward to the final episode next week! Re Tommy Wiseau, there’s a cinema here in London that hosts a Q&A with him pretty regularly, I’d say about once a year. I haven’t been, feel like it would be uncomfortable!

Since it was brought up the Daredevil movie is way better if you watch it as a live action DMC movie. The super stylized fights, the over the top characters, it really fits and makes an enjoyable watch.

I know there's one more episode you all plan to do but this was a fantastic retrospective. This series really did so much in the small time it was given. And the last two episodes ended up telling two really heartwarming stories that make the series feel complete even though it got cut down so early. Imagine what Weinstein and Oakley could have done if the networks allowed the shows to expand. Similar to Matt; I also have gone through a film nerd phase and still have it now. The irony is that in the time of COVID lots of small theaters are doing re-runs of classic movies like Ghostbusters and Empire Strikes Back to get attention. It's a practice I think even large chains should do more often. And although the film industry has gotten so corporate and large; there's still always great art to find you just need to dig a little deeper. Support smaller and foreign distribution companies like Neon or A24 (who did Uncut Gems as was name dropped here!) Don't rely only on franchises or large companies for your entertainment! If the movie stinks, just don't go!

It's kind of incredible how well done this episode centered around a gay couple written in 1999 holds up today. There wasn't really anything that made me go "yikes" watching this for the first time, and I loved how sweet and real it felt, while still delivering some pretty good jokes and a lot of pop culture references. This REALLY harkens back to the best episodes Bill & Josh produced as showrunners of the Simpsons, and it's a goddamn shame they didn't get to make more Mission Hill after this one, because this is a goddamn accomplishment. I really hope they find a home for the revival series because I will throw my money at any opportunity for more stories in this world.

That episode was very good it’s a shame that we didn’t get more Mission Hill. Glad you guys had on Matthew Jay. As a fellow Matthew I’m going to cut the audio of “we love you Matthew” and cherish that audio.
