For this week's episode, we welcome on journalist Dave Schilling--check out his new podcast Full Court Chat! After bonding over shared nerdery, we discuss Homer's new motorcycle, the group almost named "Christ Punchers," too many NRBQ songs, and much more! You may listen to this podcast, but you'll never defeat The Cobras!

the "50's diner" nostalgia was wild to me at this point because our town already had done that in the late 80s: a place in near my high school called itself "The Malt Shop" but with very few seats, it was more of a quick lunch spot. They didn't commit 100% though because they also had arcade games which were very much not of the era, but because they had arcade games (and were so close to school) all the kids hung out there - kids who could in no way remember the 1970s let alone the 50s. It was long gone by the time this episode aired.

Bumper Pool pretty much is "baby pool." It's what you get if you don't want to spend a ton of money, or have the space, for a traditional pool table. When my grandparents moved into their first "empty nest" house, my papa bought a bumper pool table for the basement. They come in different shapes and varieties, but his was just a regular rectangle shape (my cousin had one that was an octagon). It's a two-player game where each player had five balls and you took turns trying to sink each ball in the opposite hole from where you start (and there are only two holes). The "fun" in the game is trying to use the bumpers to sink your balls with various bank shots. There were two bumpers alongside each hole and a series of them in the middle of the table in a cross shape so you had to go around them. As a kid, I remember that's where the drunk guys and smokers went whenever my grandparents through a party. I'd play it as a kid too and it was fine, but not as interesting as traditional pool. It gets old, so when my grandfather decided he'd rather have a bigger table saw he actually gave it to my family. I think I used it once before my dad gave it away to someone else.

Haha Mel's diner. I used to go the market one when I worked in SF.

Being a fan of Tracey Ullman’s previous work I watched the Tracey Ullman show - only problem it was on the BBC so they took out the Simpsons shorts 😕 did not know about them till years later with advent of the World Wide Web !

Going through season 11 has been a real eye-opener. I first saw these episodes when they were new during a rough patch of my life, which made me think I liked them way less than I do. They're not great but with the benefit of hindsight I can appreciate them for what they are: pretty good cartoons.

I'm in Bob's boat. As a Catholic schoolboy, "Christ Punchers" shocked me to my core like no other Simpsons line.

The whole "Cycle Slut" bit caught me completely off guard this time and I gotta say it REALLY bugged me. Homer has done a lot of awful things (in season 11 alone), but this being present where the joke is that Homer didn't ask permission because he knew she'd say no just makes me feel gross. I wish there was something more clever, like the bike being the cycle slut and Homer not having realized Marge was there or something. As it is, Homer just crossed a consent line with Marge that I really don't like (and yes, I know protagonists don't have to be completely moral, I just think this comes across as misogynistic without any kind of good joke or comment).

Old Internet Rumor: Chris Carter believed heavily in the Y2K Doomsday, so he wanted to wrap up his shows by the end of 1999. On January 1st, he was totally lost and had to come up w/ new series arcs quick.

Lenny must love the '50s, judging by his appearance in "Marge Gets a Job" (shame he was a week early).

Maybe they got away with it by saying it meant punching *FOR* Christ. Y'know... like, fighting on his behalf, or whatever.

Oh, and I'm totally fine with the extra step of Marge throwing the bike. It's kinda like the "Super Fun Happy Slide": we all know we probably shouldn't do it... but given the already ridiculous setup, when are we going to have this chance again? ^_^ Thanks for the podcasts, folks. Stay safe. :)

Henry saying "...while in their late 30s" for this episode really stood out. Either I'm getting too old, but I really forgot that they are only supposed to be around that age. Maybe its the strong boomer energy of the plot

The “Mayonnaise and Marmalade” song is so oddly delightful. It makes me laugh every time.

Thank you for clarifying the time travel Marge part of the dance. I was so confused for the longest time. Even though it's been years since I seen this episode, I always get a laugh out of the part where the dance is over and Marge has that tired look on her face. I forgot how good this episode was.

I have been waiting for so long for this episode to understand the resumé/resumé joke. It turns out that I likely will never actually get the joke as I can't hear a difference in the pronunciations. I feel like my life has been wasted.

It’s stressing the first syllable vs. the last syllable. “REZ-oomay” (standard) vs. “rezoo-MAY” (Marge’s way)

2026-09-07 10:00 I wonder if the NRBQ documentary being worked on was their appearance on A&E’s Breakfast with the Arts. I don’t see the series cataloged thoroughly anywhere, but if you search for “nrbq breakfast with the arts” or “nrbq Simpsons” you will find bits and pieces. This clip has most of The Simpsons stuff and features Mike Scully. https://youtu.be/6FP0HTMVl9M Everything seems to indicate it was from 2003, so it is questionable.
