And she's here to help us explore Lisa's new job as a caretaker for the family after Marge breaks her leg! Will Bart and Homer be able to help in any way? I had totally forgotten about this episode until watching it and I think it might stealthily be my favourite of the season so far. The "Stupid Sexy Flanders" bit alone makes this a classic, but goddamn I found myself laughing a lot this episode. It's GREAT to see Lisa actually being the focus of one again, and getting to 1-Up Homer and Bart is something she rarely gets to succeed at for any amount of time. I'm also glad that the Ned joke has actually aged pretty well, with Homer's disgust at his suit being more of a "I hate Ned" thing than homer's phobia, followed by him still acknowledging that it's objectively sexy.

“Fanny first “ always has a extra funny meaning in U.K. but it’s a mild “swear” so most of the time it goes uncensored eg Lisa has a star on her fanny in summer of 4’2 - they always censor when they say wanker though unless it’s a late night showing

That Lucy whisper joke is maybe the last time I had a huge laugh at a Simpsons gag. I still remember my belly laugh when I first saw it back in 2000.

I forgot this episode was Stupid Sexy Flanders, the Leprosy joke, and the ghost of Lucy. Thought the ghost of Lucy/Leprosy was one ep and the skiing was another ep.

I think the next notable woman in the Simpsons writing staff will be Stephanie Gillis in Season 17 but I'm glad the last few recent seasons starting with S28, there has been multiple female scripted episodes, most of which have been really good. But this episode is a dark horse for being the one of the best episodes post S8 and man, that I Love Lucy domestic violence joke is really dark and this season loves the whisper talking bit.

Bob, I am surprised you whose online persona is so attached to classic gaming would advocate for tossing boxes in 2020. It's the box that adds worth to those classic video games of yesterday. We were so foolish as we threw them out, not realizing that copy of Bayou Billy would one day pay for a month of precious American healthcare. Clearly, your advice is a long con to get everyone to toss their boxes while you hoard them making you thousands of dollars one day in the future! This episode is a really enjoyable, wacky, Season 11 episode. We got a lot of "wacky" to come where the humor doesn't really land as well and the wackiness works against the narrative. This one basically takes it to the edge, but resists going off the cliff. As I look ahead I see a few episodes that definitely fail to recognize the limit of what this show should do when it comes to outlandish plots. At least it's comforting to know those episodes I partly dread are in your past since you're so far ahead on your recordings.

Now you've got me thinking about Dog the Bounty Hunter vs. Joe Exotic.

The conversation about disco jokes reminded me of the how wild the anti disco movement was. It was spear headed by Steve Dahl, a Chicago DJ. Dhal stoked anti disco sentiment by claiming that it was taking away airtime from rock music. He organized anti disco rallies which spread to other major cities like Portland. The anti disco movement culminated with “Disco Demolition Night” where fans could get cheap admission to a Chicago White Sox game if they brought a disco record. The records were collected and blown up in a box after the game ended. Dhal organized the event and showed up in army fatigues to blow up the records. As soon as the records were destroyed, fans rushed into the field wreaking havoc. This snowballed into a full on riot which had to be put down by the Chicago PD. I’m not sure if there’s been a backlash on this scale in recent years. I also wanted to mention how the anti disco movement has spawned some debate among scholars about its causes, mainly the extent homophobia and racism played in fueling anti disco sentiment. Discos were popular hangouts for POCs and the LGBTQ+ community. This probably did not sit well with the primarily cis straight white male rock/metal fandom of the late 1970’s. Anyway great episode as always and I can’t wait to hear your takes on “Behind the Laughter.”

After far too many overpriced hours spent on AOL, all of those Elwood Edwards clips are burned forever into my brain. I remember in the late 90s/early aughts, through his webpage, Elwood (for a fee) would record you a custom WAV file. The disclaimer in bold was that he refused to say anything vulgar, off color, or blasphemous - which, realistically would be the only reason someone would pay for the service. I'm guessing one of the tech minded writers of the Simpsons saw this offer and worked backwards to fit him into a script. Oh, to see some of the table drafts full of things he probably refused to say.

No It Doesn't

As Talking Simpsons goes further into the Simpsons season, specifically starting with this season, I'm getting bombarded by childhood memories of during this time when I started watching "new" episodes of the Simpsons. I'm surprised how many jokes still hold up or how I'm appreciating these jokes for the first time again because now I'm an adult. And wow, I didn't realize so many good memes from this era too! Really fun revisiting this episode by listening to TS. Also shout out to Lindsay Katai, Infinity Train S3 is AMAZING!

Don't be so quick to dismiss "Little Big Man"! It's a pro-Native American, anti-cavalry film partially made to protest the Vietnam War. I haven't seen it but it's supposed to be very good.

Pedantic correction: AOL is NOT a part of Time-Warner anymore, they split away a decade ago and are now a media company. It's funny how Henry brings up that Dragon Quest is kind of a generic-sounding name, because that's literally why it was changed: Another tabletop RPG called "DragonQuest" already existed, so they changed it not wanting to infringe on the name.

Oooh once you get to Faith Off, I know what the original line was when Homer crashes into the ditch. Back in the day, the subtitles would display the original lines instead of the ADR. When they crash into the ditch, the subtitle line was "Stupid Ford"

Diamond Feit

true story: the Hansen's Disease twist is the reason why this episode joined Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo on the "banned in Japan" list - the topic is extremely taboo here.

I sort of remember the Full House final episode where Michelle fell off the horse and got amnesia. I am not going to revisit the episode even though it's on Hulu. I think that episode was an excuse for Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen to be together in one room. There was a moment were a version of Michelle with her memories appears to the amnesiac Michelle. They have a conversation and they merge and that is how she regains her memory. It was the only time on the show where Mary Kate and Ashley appeared together even though the Olsen twins were famous outside of Full House by this point and people were aware that they were twins. After that DJ goes to the prom with Aladdin...err...her boyfriend Steve and the episode ends with a final cast bow. I don't remember it being a clip show but I remember the episode feeling off for a finale. I remember being a kid and not realizing it was the final episode. I wonder how much time in advance they knew it was going to be the finale because it felt like a season finale and not a series finale to me. This is no criticism to the writer of the episode. It would be interesting to see if the writers were under pressure to close out the show and how time much in advance they had to close out the show.

I don't think the joke was Lucille Ball's ghost coming to visit Lisa, and instead was Lucy Ricardo, the character's ghost. This is why she identifies herself as Lucy Ricardo. That makes the joke much funnier to me as well as far less morbid

Stephen C. Nedell

I very rarely watched Full House but there was an early episode where the twins appeared together when they were still pre-verbal. Jessie was having some sort of fever dream and the two of them ran into his room with a voice chanting at him "change me! Feed me!" over and over again.

Angel

Thank you! I didn't know that. Do you remember if it was before the twins became really famous?

Bob Mackey

Ah yes but she refers to herself as both "Ricardo" and "Carmichael," which were two distinct Lucy characters

2026-09-07 10:00 Ah, I totally forgot this episode was where they go skiing for 2 seconds, I can chime on on this. I did competitive ski racing in the northeast from elementary through high school, and all these jokes are 100% a west coast LA comedy writer's perspective. In the east, parents just dump their kids at the ski mountain on weekends like it's the mall, and second hand equipment in New England is dirt cheap. Having raced competitively, requiring me to wear a GS-suit (Giant Slalom Suit) like Flanders, teenager body maturation rates become, let's say, very obvious during high school. Skiing is also ostensibly a co-ed sport (boys and girls don't compete against each other, but races are run consecutively on the same day). Everybody of every gender is in a Stupid Sexy Flanders suit and it definitely informs some preferences in a hormonal brain. People joke about how horny high school band is -- having seen both up close, nothing compares to ski racing. Also, cross-country skiing is for narcs and off-season track & field kids, so take that, Lisa!

Lindsay was an amazing guest. So funny. Please have her back on soon.

It was the first or second season so they weren't famous but it was known the character was played by twins.

I always kept the boxes for my most prized toys, specifically my Gen 1 vintage Star Wars toys. My family moved a bunch of times so it helped to keep the sets together. Funnily enough the vintage boxes themselves have value now. I sold my original 1981 AT-AT box for 40 bucks a few months ago (the AT-AT toy itself disappeared under mysterious circumstances in 1994 but I'm not bitter).

Pussy from Pittsburgh which is beautiful BTW

My girlfriend’s dad was actually Vivian Bagley’s son on The Lucy Show, he was also an extra in the Music Man, and an episode of the Outer Limits that we watch every Halloween. He’s stayed out of the spotlight once he grew up and was the only cast member that didn’t make public appearances except for one event. He loves Vivian Vance and talks about how great she was to him and reminisces about parties at Lucille Ball’s house.
