It's time for a Futurama episode about stuffing your face, just as you're probably on the brink of eating Thanksgiving leftovers for the next five days! This week, the Planet Express crew stumbles upon a planet filled to the brim with delicious morsels, which end up being the offspring of our old pals from Omicron Persei 8. Along the way, we learn the difference between taste-sicles and test-sicles, meet the first of many members of the Free Waterfall family, and drink our fill of extreme walrus juice. Now stuff yourself with turkey (or Tofurky) and get ready for some old-fashioned 1990s-style vegetarian-bashing!

Hey, it's the first episode I ever saw of Futurama.

I’m really curious how much fish bob eats since he alluded to it being rare, I just hope it’s not everyday. To be completely fair I still eat some meat so it’s not even really fair for me to get a little weirded out every time Bob mentions being a pescatarian but I reduced my meat intake considerably which is easy because my fiancé is vegetarian but I’m probably like 90% vegetarian I eat meat very occasionally but no more frequently than it being present in one meal at most a day and most days I don’t eat meat at all, but I don’t deny myself meet either I just actively try to eat less of it for the same environmental reasons as Bob and I allow myself to eat it sometimes for the same reason Bob allows himself to eat fish I just wish there was another option and as meat replacement gets better and better maybe we will have it because I don’t want pescatarian to be the solution because it is so so bad for the environment to eat fish because so much of it comes from natural fish stock that’s basically gone from the planet and not hatcheries. it’s also selfish that partly I want the fish to still be there so that I can catch them myself but I always put them back and do my best to catch and release without harming the fish, which can be done. Fish are just so crucial for the ecosystem and they’re so fucked already that I just don’t want people who are considering to eat less meat to think that replacing it with fish is a good solution if their main goal in eating less meat is because of the environment but if you’re only eating it very very sparingly like very sparingly there’s no reason to not eat fish. As I’ve said before another comments I do eat fish on occasion but I catch them myself and I think that’s a fair rule that we should probably abide by because if you don’t live by the water you shouldn’t be eating fish that’s part of the reason why there’s not a lot of fish left you’ve got people in Colorado eating cod and grouper and tuna, that doesn’t make sense...

Leela's full name is based on the Turangalîla Symphony by Messiaen!

I can tell you that the last Howard Johnson’s is in Lake George NY and as of November 2020 it’s still open! The last time I went to one was around 2005 in Lake Placid. To be honest, you didn’t miss much. It was known for its ice cream, salad bar; and fried clams, which were all novelties when they were big. I think they were the FIRST chain restaurant.

I certainly agree that this episode has some VERY tired politics in regards to vegetarianism, which is extremely bogus, but despite that this is still a damn fantastic episode. You guys are absolutely right that it needed some more of that Brannigan vs "Smelly Hippy" bickering because they work so well off of each other, and it felt like a bit of a waste to limit their interaction so much. There's also one small detail I LOVE in this episode that I don't think Bob or Henry brought up (my apologies if I did miss it): a very bizarre photo of a drunken-looking Fry with Nibbler that's pinned to the corkboard behind Farnsworth as he says he wants to dissect the Lil Poppler's brain. It pretty much looks like a selfie, which makes it even funnier to me in the year 2020, and here it is via Morbotron: https://morbotron.com/img/S02E19/464587.jpg

The title of this episode Problem with Popplers is a nod to TheTrouble with Tribbles Star Trek episode. I have a feeling this is why one of the first jokes in this episode was about Gene Roddenberry.

Pound Cake is amazing guys. It’s a staple dessert for black families

My first dvd was “the family man” cause me and my dad had to convince my mother it was a good idea to buy one so we bought her a movie for it first.

Super pedantry forthcoming: The Fishy Joe's theme is the traditional tune, "Sailor's Hornpipe" and dates back to the 1700s. It's so commonly mixed with the Popeye theme, that the two are often seen as the same song. Back in the 30s, it was a great way to elicite a nautical feel in the underscore. Now it's used in most Popeye media because it's in the public domain, unlike the official theme, "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man" by Sammy Learner, a temp track that was deemed 'good enough' by the Fleischer Brothers. These days there are multiple owners of various pieces of the Popeye license. King Features Syndicate owns the character, Warner Brothers own the theatrical cartoon catalogue, and the Learner estate owns the theme song. This is why modern Popeye cartoons and video games tend to use the hornpipe instead... one less round of royalties to pay out!

Wow so Baby Yoda just stole his genocidal sentient creature eating from Futurama. And who says tv doesn’t influence kids.

Finally a 2000 cartoon brave enough to stick it to hippies

Haha. Zoom etiquette. If only at the time you knew...

The only good news you'll get in 2020: I will not spend money on a Drawn Together episode. That show sucks in a very uninteresting way.

I can't recall if y'all mention this but both this episode and Last Tap Dance in Springfield both aired on the same night. Fitting that y'all got them on the same week.

I must confess I was way too entertained by the vegetarian jokes when I first saw this episode. I was basically the perfect target audience member for them. I was a freshman in college and my roommate, a friend from back home, was the stereotypical recently enlightened college individual in the midst of numerous life changes that he was all too eager to share and talk down towards others about. And near the top of those changes, was a switch to veganism. He was pretty exhausting to live with and he'd freely admit that now. He maintained most of those life changes, but dropped the smugness. And the robe. Yeah, for some reason he wore a robe everywhere that entire freshman year and stopped cutting his air and pretty much cut out bathing as well (it wastes water). It was an interesting year. This episode still amuses me though, even though I read most of the jokes as unnecessarily hostile towards vegetarians. I think a lot of it comes from older writers in the 90s who looked back on the protests of the 60s as being the only protests that were about something and couldn't see the point in protesting in the modern day. And I'm hoping most of them feel differently today.

Not to call out your restaurant choices you but Angeline's is my favorite place to eat in Berkeley

Nope, we definitely caught it!
