This week we're joined by Gary Butterfield from the Duckfeed.tv podcasts, all for a discussion as simple as "tapa-tapa-tapa!" We discuss season 11's big Lisa episode as she learns dancing isn't as easy as it looks in the movies, while Bart goes camping in the mall. So turn on your self-tapping shoes, because you'll enjoy this podcast ever so much!!

Like everyone else my age, I was introduced to Shirley Temple through those DVD collection commercials that Cartoon Network played a lot. And yikes, did not know about the stuff Shirley did in her early roles. Looks like the Hays Code was good for something.

homer's final words at the end always cracked me up

Huh I expected a talk to the audience today so this is a nice surprise

You know, I didn’t think anything would top the eye crust joke in terms of pure revulsion going into the podcast , but the “War Baby” anecdote sure did the trick.

That's Donald O'Connor in "Singin' in the Rain" Henry, not Danny Kaye. I'm ever so shocked by the misnaming!

Haha, site for sore eyes is a bay area staple.

That's a little too much lady junk drawn on Little Vickie in that thumbnail for my liking.

Another decent episode! I'm really surprised with how good the back half of season 11 is after they shook their sillies out

I live in a part of the US where malls are still a thing. I'm in northern Massachusetts which, like most states in the country, charges sales tax on purchases. Just a 30 minute drive from my house is New Hampshire, the good ole live free or die state. No income tax and no sales tax means the border of the two states is just lined with retailers including two vibrant malls in Nashua and Manchester, NH. Though with more and more people buying stuff online, it's not as big a talking point as it used to be when there were often attempts to impose sales tax on MA residents for purchases in NH, but NH wasn't going to go along with any of that. The last big one was tire sales, probably because it's obvious when a MA resident is buying tires and having them installed, maybe 10 years ago. The law failed to pass and I can't recall any big legislative efforts since to apply tax to MA residents. And in case you're wondering, if I have to buy something that's more than 100 dollars or so you're damn right I'm going to NH to get it.

My public school PE taught us both kinds of dance, square and line. 🙄

For some reason this episode and King of the Hill seemingly never hit the syndication rotation in western PA. I’m curious if it’s why I never came around to them. You watch something for ten straight years and it endears itself to you.

Now that Bob's seen "Singin'," it's a good time to put Cats Don't Dance in the poll for the WAC Movie.

Mission Impossible II soundtrack also lead to the death of Napster: Metallica's song for that album getting leaked early through that service lead to the infamous lawsuit that would eventually end the service as it was. Though now the name lives on for a LEGAL streaming service. Putin jokes have resurfaced AGAIN through the new Animaniacs reboot doing a whole song about modern Russia that kinda... skirts the line between "hating the leaders" and "hating the country". "Tappa tappa tappa" always stuck in my mind, glad you guys and Gary picked up on that, lol. In terms of latter-day Simpsons memes I use from this era, they almost ALL come from Behind the Laughter, which I can't wait until you guys get to in a couple of weeks. The story of the bitter "Hollywood hopeful" dance teacher taking it out on the kids sounds so sad, especially when you remember how ridiculously cutthroat dance is in general. I love Singin' in the Rain and old Hollywood musicals in general, big part of why I'm fond for tap dancing. Great example of tap dancing being difficult in animation: Episodes of Steven Universe like "Mr. Greg" and others feature it (with the sounds of actual tap dancing from Peridot's voice actor Shelby Rabara), but VERY briefly. Just enough to get the point across, but not enough to start cutting into the budget. Leftorium outright closed down when Ned became the new 4th grade teacher replacing Edna. The crusty eyes joke are SO gross, jeez I forgot this is the episode with it. You can thank the 5th Final Destination movie from 2011 for causing a newer generation to, once again, fear laser eye surgery. Henry's right, Moulin Rouge! was just a year before release, 2001. I remember my sister got into Strictly Ballroom for a while, though I've still never seen it. I do wonder if Shirley Temple would've taken the obvious parodies of her life well. While I'm big into old hollywood musicals, I've actually not seen her work yet. Was this podcast recorded BEFORE Cuties came out? Because people have REALLY been talking about that film's similarly skivvy elements. Besides "tappa tappa tappa", I do love Ralph's line from this, "Teacher, my shoes are making noise!" NZ doesn't have many dead/dying malls, the ones I go too are always very busy and filled with people. But I did go to dead mall one in Auckland with my family when I visited there. The place was very eerie and creepy, especially with the lack of lighting. The idea of being trapped in a mall only seems appealing at first: Once the novelty wears off, it's nothing special. In terms of old musicals with good plots, I recommend Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) and It's Always Fair Weather (1955). The former's really sweet and fun, while the latter's got a shockingly cynical story by '50s hollywood standards. Aside from the error Nina already pointed out, I have some extra trivia about that Make 'Em Laugh scene: Donald really did get put through the ringer for the dancing, as did everyone because Gene Kelly made everyone work 150% all the time. He was performing on a CONCRETE FLOOR during the song's finale, and he was basically exhausted. Meanwhile, Debbie's feet were VERY bloody after performing Good Morning over and over. The bit with Vicky talking about how "oh the lead actor's sick and can't do the show, whatever shall we do?" is 100% a parody an old, OLD film musical trope all the way back in 42nd Street: Where the lead actor can't do the show, and so a chorus girl in waiting has to step up to play her and steals the show. Nitpick: The TOH III segment was called "King Homer", not "Homer Kong". The idea of Vicky dancing until she died really reminded me of the Rite of Spring, which ends with the sacrificial girl dancing until she dies.

Whew! When Bob started in on the day he became a man, I thought we were getting an entirely different kind of story. I don't know what kind of synth it was, but Matt Sharp's side project The Rentals featured a young Maya Rudolph playing the hook on the song Waiting and she's in its music video. As for the explosion of inexplicably angry white boy music, there was a girl named Lori in my HS class that claimed to have hooked up with Durst on occasion before his band broke. There was some debate at the time over whether she was lying for clout, but I was inclined to believe her as she was that kid who always knew bands before they got big and was known to use her older sister's ID to get into clubs. So if you needed a reason to hate on Limp Bizkit, Durst is an alleged predator.

As to Bob's prediction that he, Henry and the guests are out of the Wacky Woods -- I've been taking advantage of Disney+ to hit all of the seasons I never saw with any regularity because I was only living with my parents part-time and didn't have Sky. While I've found a few gems throughout Seasons 11 - 16, Season 17 is the most uninspired, joyless mess I've encountered so far, despite having a few notable points like "The Italian Bob" and "The Ricky Gervais Smile-Time Vanity Half-Hour". It feels like what my brain REMEMBERED Season 10 and 11 being as the euphoria of being a die-hard viewer drained away. It also has FOUR anthology episodes in it! (Also an amnesia episode.) Like Robert Frost, I now realise that the Wacky Woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I've chronology to keep. And miles to [annoyed grunt] before I sleep.

What business did The Simpsons cause more harm to: laser eye surgery or Arby's?

I can confirm that Canadians are in love with their malls, here in Calgary there were chuckleheads actually lining up to get into the malls the day our half-assed lockdown was eased earlier this year.

You mentioned that “Spaceship Lollipop” probably has some funny lines if you listen closely, and now it’s Kyle’s time to shine, because I made sure to listen closely as a kid during subsequent viewings. Here’s the lyrics I could make out: On the Spaceship Lollipop Gingerbread men like to do hip hop And chocolate chips Make a rockin’ fuel for rocket ships We just love to dance on Mars Where everything’s made from candy bars... Then it gets truly inaudible. Nothing really laugh out loud funny in there, but I like that they went to the trouble to make four lines of believably cheesy grade school stage show lyrics (with some clever rhymes) that most viewers would never even notice.

Canadian reporting in - I can confirm that malls still exist and are doing fine here (at least up until the pandemic). In fact, Ottawa has MULTIPLE malls, and I haven't even heard of any closures during the past 8 months, so it does seem like they'll continue to exist post-COVID. It's been weird hearing about the death of malls in America for the past decade while teens have continued to hang out at them and they're still often a go-to for many different things you might want/need. -- I'm glad you guys enjoyed this episode as much as I did because I definitely think it's one of the strongest of the season, and a legit really good episode. I'll agree the ending maybe leaves a little to be desired, which could've been fixed by just giving Lisa a moment to really tell off the instructor or something.

Hey fellas just a little aside, I got lasik last year and it wasn’t so bad, I didn’t even get the eye crust over like Homer( what a rip off). However for a month I had to put in eye drops every few hours. It was a simple procedure that took only 15 minutes with less than 24 hours of recovery, I have been glasses free since then. If anyone is worried about the procedure it’s Pain free I don’t want to go into details but it sounds worse than it is. Also during recovery I got to listen to talking Simpsons podcasts the whole time.
