We welcome back podcaster/journalist Dave Schilling--check out his podcast Full Court Chat--for the proper start of season 12! In the landmark 250th episode, the town is divided between slobs and snobs, Homer becomes The Mayor, and somehow it all turns into a concert by The Who. All that plus an open-ended badger fight in this week's podcast!

“Stoats... stoats...” is one of the latter-day lines my family quotes the most

Bennett Billard

I very vividly remember watching this w/ my sis at our grandparents who wouldn't have approved (danged GOP-ers). 😉 We were in the bedroom, so they weren't going to bother us.

I guess the area code thing was happening all over the country during this period. I grew up in Hudson Valley area of New York, where the area code used to be 914. Then in around 2000, only Westchester County got to keep 914, and the rest of the Hudson Valley got assigned the new 845 area code.

Just one minor point about the Cardinal, as someone who grew up in Missouri I can say it is strange that both our sports teams were both the Cardinals for the longest time, especially given that the Missouri state bird is the Blue Bird (which funnily enough is what Skinner says their town bird is in this episode). However, to Bob’s saying that there are no cardinals in Missouri, they actually do live here in abundance. Growing up my grandfather used to take nature walks with my siblings and I as he was big into trees and flowers, and whenever we spotted a cardinal he would make it a point to snap a picture of it just because of its association with our home baseball team. Still to this day whenever I visit my parents it’s more than likely that I will see a cardinal on their back deck eating out of their bird feeder

Take this with a grain of salt, because I'm just a white person who took Sanskrit for a few years, but Bob's pronunciation of "Bhagavad Gita" was pretty good.

Badgers, stoats, voles, ..... all this just after I saw the Netflix Redwall series announcement. the stars have aligned!

Henry must have caught Dave off-guard with his comment about the Cardinals winning in 2008, because they did not win the Super Bowl that year. They made it to the Super Bowl and lost to the Steelers. They haven't made it back since. And just more clarity on the Cardinals, they were basically the most irrelevant professional sports franchise in the country in the 90s. In the world of football, you have teams like the Browns and Bengals (sorry Ohio) that are just known for being terrible and mocked for it, where as the Cardinals were just so bad they weren't even funny. You could guarantee they would be a bad, boring, team year in and year out. Since around 2008, they've been better and made the playoffs a few times, but have yet to find a sustained run of success. My head canon for Edna being on the rich side of town is that she's a poor person who rents an apartment from a rich guy. And that rich guy didn't want real estate in the slums. He probably inherited an old house in the nice part of town and had it converted into apartments.

Nina or another reader would know specifics, but the basic plot of dividing Springfield into two towns resulting in utter chaos was in Simpsons Comics #50, which came out before this episode, same year. It was a far better take on the concept, and as a kid it sort of woke me up to the fact that the Bongo Comics were usually better written than any of the contemporary episodes at this point.

Regarding area codes, I'm lucky(?) enough to live in a state (VT) that has just one area code for every landline, cell phone, and fax. And since our population is actually going down, hopefully I can live a long life without having to remember ten numbers, since I'm not that big of a monkey.

I know that I can't get mad about spoilers of a 30 year old show, but I'm watching Twin Peaks right now and was not expecting a spoiler on this podcast

Pepsi is not part of Yum! Brands despite Pepsi products still being served at their restaurants to this day. The company did start as the fast food division of Pepsi but then spun off to become Tricon (tri because of their three restaurant brands at the time Pizza Hut, KFC, and Taco Bell). Tricon was renamed to Yum! Brands later partially due to the acquisition of additional brands. My dad has worked for Pizza Hut corporate and various franchisers for most of my life, and I am currently drinking from a Pizza Hut cup that of course does have the Pepsi logo on the reverse.

I was SO happy to hear you mention whatbadgerseat.com and Conan's hornymanatee.com! I think about these fake sites ALL. THE. TIME. According to Conan when they first created the website, it was because if it's a site mentioned by a show, they have to own it or otherwise could be liable to the content on it. I'm not sure how much of that is true, or to what extent. But I do this to this day when a show flippantly mentions a website. BoJack Horsemans WhatTimeIsItRightNow.com directs you to a site with time zones (in the BoJack font) and a fake ad for the upcoming Philbert show. To bring this full circle, recently Conan talked about BigDickHistory.com on his podcast and it directs you to his podcast.

I'm from fresno, I don't live there any more but I still have a 559 area code. And i do have vague memories of the split from 209 to 559

I've heard it before but I really disagree that Russ Cargill should have been Hank Scorpio, for a few reasons but the main reason is: Hank Scorpio should never be upset with Homer Simpson or want to harm him in any way, and Homer Simpson should never take any action that disappoints or inconveniences Hank Scorpio. They have a special relationship and bond. No matter how evil Scorpio is and no matter how stupid Homer is, nothing should break that bond. If Homer were to light Hank's house on fire, Hank should congratulate him on thinking outside the box because Hank was just about to do that himself. So I don't think he can be an antagonist to the Simpson family.

In defense of the Arizona Cardinals (which really I couldn't care less about, but somebody has to defend them), we got to the Super Bowl in 2009, dangit!

Alex Forsyth

We got a new area code where I live in 2006. However here they did the overlap method. Basically everyone gets to keep their number and all new numbers get the new area code. The overall boundaries of both area codes are identical. Also, even with the population decline, Youngstown probably has more phone numbers then when its population was at its highest. Cellphones caused a change from one number per household to one number per person. Plus VoIP allowing businesses to cheaply have more phone numbers.

2026-09-07 10:00 Got to the part about stadiums and wanted to throw in that Philadelphia's subway stations have also fallen victim to corporate naming conventions. In the past decade, the last stop of the subway that leads to the sports complex has been called AT&T Station and NRG (pronounced energy) Station. You would think that Philadelphian born corporate overlord Comcast would rename a train station but that hasn't happened yet. Instead, we got Xfinity Live which is where concerts and stuff are held. Commuter rail stations are renamed for hospitals that happen to be named for famous Philadelphians and that happen to be attached to colleges. Penn Medicine Station (named for University of Pennsylvania's Penn Medicine) use to be University City Station. This was very shorty before COVID-19 shutdown so people are still processing this. Winning the award for that probably make sense in hindsight and people didn't mind this change as much, Jefferson Station (named for Thomas Jefferson Health Systems attached to Jefferson University) use to be Market East Station.

I guess I’m one of few people that became a fan of The Simpsons thru the movie (I was 12 when it came out and the show was “past it’s prime” by then), but I agree using established characters would help the movie. I saw The Avengers without watching the other Marvel movies and I still enjoyed it, even excited to go back and watch what led to it. Hank Scorpio wouldn’t make a difference to me but I’d be happy for fans like you

Hello, I'm a British Person. The "auto ring-up" gag never made any sense, because growing up we always called it "speed dial" too. It's certainly how the feature is listed on landline phones you can buy today. If someone were to say "auto ring-up" to me, I would expect they meant Automatic Ring-Back (or often just Ringback in the UK), the feature where you call someone, their line is engaged, so you key in a short number sequence and your line will dial them again as soon as they're free. It really feels like a line where Mike Scully presumed that the name would be different, asked The Who what they'd call speed-dial and they had a quick Who Huddle to try and work out what Scully was talking about. "What do we use to call people on the phone until they're not busy?" "Neil? He does that sort of thing." "Yes but we can't just say 'Neil', nobody will know who he is." "We could use his full name. Does anyone know his full name?" "I'm pretty sure it's Neil Autoringup."

Y’all getting worked up over Homer’s disembowelment when the bottom half of Isaac Newton is brought to the present to kick Frink in the ass lol

(Edit: I meant season 12 DVDs) Irish listener here and I've definitely seen the badger ripping open Homer's stomach before? I don't think I would have seen it anywhere other than Sky One either as I never got these season 11 DVDs. If the badger scenes are cut out they may have been from later airings of the show.

Another thing to add for Talking Cardinals comments: while the Cardinals were based in St Louis from the 60s-80s, before that they called Chicago home. The team got their name not from the cardinal bird but from the cardinal color. In 1901 the team owner at the time, Chris O'Brien, purchased used maroon-colored uniforms from the University of Chicago and described the color as "Cardinal Red", thus changing the team name to the Cardinals. Bonus fact: The Cardinals are the oldest continually-running NFL franchise, being founded in 1898 in Chicago as the Morgan Athletic Club.

Even with a couple of iffy spots, this episode is really fucking good and I'm kind of shocked I'm saying that about a damn season 12 episode

Continuity Alert! Mr. Burns's number was already revealed in s08e07 "Lisa's Date with Density" and it's the first number that the auto-dialer calls! 555-0001 Are we to assume the richest man in Springfield has multiple phone numbers? Probably. Would he actually be willing to pay for multiple lines though? Unlikely. I'm leaning towards blunder on this one. https://frinkiac.com/caption/S08E07/341507

I maintain that "The Seeker" should've been one of the CSI themes.
