Fittingly we've reached the end of the year of What A Cartoon Movies as we discuss the final film of Evangelion (not counting the four that came after) for a full FIVE HOURS. How did this controversial movie get made? How does it hold up more than 23 years after release? And is the newest English localization an improvement from that of our youths? We answer all of that in our massive final WAC podcast of 2020!

Had to up my pledge to hear your take on my all-time favourite film. I first watched it on TV, having never previously heard of Eva (let alone seen an episode of the series). Needless to say, my 16-yo mind was blown. I spent much of the following day scouring the internet during every free moment I had at school to find an explanation for what I had seen. I bought the box set of the series and the End of Eva DVD as soon as I was able and blasted through both in one sitting when I was home alone during the school holidays. When I got an iPod with video capabilities the one video I had on there for the life of the device was the "Kom Susser Tod" sequence. I was obsessed. My most recent rewatch of the series and End was when it hit Netflix last year. My wife watched it with me and it felt like I was letting her read my teenage diaries. I still really love the series despite its flaws, and I think I love End of Eva even more with every viewing. Even with 14+ more years of film literacy under my belt it blows my mind as much today as it did when I first saw it.

Holy shit, 5 hours. Talk about going out with a bang.

JAHN!

Excited to listen to this and now that you mentioned Kaiji (though by accident), I hope that you will do an episode on that series in 2021 🤞

I watched all of the TV series and the film for the first time a couple of weeks ago in anticipation of this podcast - and it did not disappoint! Thanks so much for the great content this year.

Anno’s true mastery comes from making creepy giants, as demonstrated by the god warriors in Nausicaa and I believe the nightwalker in mononoke was his creation as well. Writing I would argue isn’t his strong suit though shin godzilla is pretty good. I am psyched for the ultraman movie he’s working on as ultraman is a creepy giant and I would argue evangelion actually shares more with ultraman than it does with a lot of the mecha anime cited as inspiration. Also the striking imagery of the end of end of evangelion is actually stolen wholesale from a 70s pulp scifi cover : https://davidyat.es/content/images/2014/Jun/General-Zapped.jpg

This is a shout out to Bob for the way he says yeah in a I kind of get this sort of voice because I thought I was the only one having trouble piecing together all of the plot that was going on in the mechanics of it lol

Listening to this while waiting for a COVID test, the wait is like 4 hours in this godforsaken country

Amazing Episode! Thank you

My read on the final scene is that Asuka and Shinji are being honest with each other for the first time. Essentially she's always treated him with cruelty and he's always responded passively. But, having just exited instrumentality, Shinji releases his suppressed aggression, and in response Asuka shows that she actually cares about him (but still finds him disgusting), which causes him to stop. I think the point is for the first two people who exit instrumentality to demonstrate how humanity can move forward understanding one another better by being honest about their feelings, as difficult and ugly as it is.

Absolutely loved this episode! I have never read or listened to anything that did a better job of contextualizing End of Eva and its production. Just to comment on a couple of things that were brought up, while Hideaki Anno wasn’t the credited director of theatrical episode 25’, it’s possible that he was still fairly involved with it. The @annocinema Twitter account recently highlighted that many cuts of animation from that portion of the film, specifically from the scenes of the JSDF invading NERV, are staged similarly to shots from “The Battle of Okinawa”, a 1971 film that Hideaki Anno is obsessed with and has professed to watching over 100 times. I don’t know if it really means much, but I thought that was an interesting observation to discover years later. https://twitter.com/annocinema/status/1325664500662595584 Regarding the alternate version of The End of Evangelion that Henry mentioned, not only was the first version of the film released on home video in Japan slightly different from what was shown in theatres, it was actually split across two separate VHS tapes. One volume included the theatrical edition of episode 25’ and the original television version of episode 25, and another volume included the theatrical edition of episode 26’ and the original television version of episode 26, which means that in Japan fans originally had to double dip if they wanted to own the whole thing on VHS, or shell out for a fancy box set. In addition to muting Asuka’s line, this version slightly modifies the film to feel more like separate episodes. Theatrical episode 25’ even ends with an original next episode preview for the second half of the movie! That can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWmLzV7tFPo This version of theatrical episode 25’ also has a shortened credit sequence that removes the annoying “jazzy” portion of “Thantos – If I Can’t Be Yours” and theatrical episode 26’ has its own credits. Most early End of Eva fansubs were made using this version of the film, and I personally kind of prefer it. The Japanese Blu-ray release has both cuts, and while I am hoping that the upcoming GKids release also has them both, I’m not holding my breath.

I watched the entirety of Evangelion including this movie and the three rebuild films because of WAC's original episode on it back in 2019 (thanks to Netflix putting them up so I could actually watch the damn thing) and have since become kind of obsessed with it. I've only seen this movie twice now, and I have so many damn feelings about it that I immediately understood how this could take the cake as the longest WAC Movie episode yet. Ultimately, I think it's mostly a much better finale than the aired episodes 25 & 26, but it does get frustratingly slow and obtuse in the second half. It's the kind of thing that when I originally watched it and I was left mostly wondering "what the fuck?" and thinking maybe I was just dumb for not understanding it. Revisiting it helped me understand it more, and you guys certainly illuminated a lot, and now I'm definitely more on the camp of it's just confusing or intentionally combative in following up on the show's lore, which does make it very imperfect, but I'll still definitely watch it again in the future. I really hope you guys do the rebuild films in the future, and I'm so curious to hear what you'd have to say about the third one because I think it might actually be my least favourite part of the franchise (that I've ingested, anyway).
