We welcome back our pal Drew Mackie from the Gayest Episode Ever Podcast for an early season 12 episode all about Hollywood dads! After a book fair, Krusty learns he has a daughter he never met before (played by Drew Barrymore), leading the clown on a strange journey of fatherhood with Homer as his guide. All that plus the debuts of Johnny Tightlips and Frankie The Squealer, so listen or go suck on a lemon!

Catch 22 was Joseph Heller Bob! Worst episode ever.

Nice to have Krusty able to perform an act of heroism, preventing the extrajudicial assassination of a foreign leader.

Tom Wolfe is the one who said the following that has stuck in my brain as fairly accurate: "The Simpsons also managed to make a virtue out of bad draftsmanship. The characters are really terribly drawn, but they are so stylized that it doesn’t make any difference any longer."

The villain of Thor 2 was “Malekith”, played by Doctor Who notable Christopher Eccleston. Much like his time on Doctor Who and GI Joe, he did not have anything kind to say about his MCU role. Thor 2, like many movies in that phase of the MCU, suffers from being messed with by the creative committee that were running the show at the time before Fiege gave them the boot. Ever wonder why Thor 2 was kinda boring and Age of Ultron had the weird Thor bath scene? The creative committee is the answer.

Matt

Taking umbrage on ICP’s behalf given they specifically didn’t hold the Gathering last year to keep Juggalos safe

Regarding the Green Mountain Boys, they were a militia group before and during the Revolutionary War, based out of Vermont, and led by Ethan Allen, who later had a chain of furniture stores named after him. It is now used as the informal name for the members of the Vermont National Guard.

Eve of the Stars

Manta ray slander! You guys said a manta ray killed Steve Irwin, but it was a sting ray! Manta rays are pretty much harmless to humans. I think this blunder should cause somebody to perhaps get fired!

This is a pretty good episode, and a good Krusty story. It's not without its warts, but I really like how Krusty is written. I also really love that poker scene. It seems a lot of the time Hollywood portrays four aces as the best poker hand imaginable, so to see Krusty lose to the superior hand is a great swerve. As a teen when this first aired, it even confused me because I knew very little about poker. I think Hollywood assumes most are only a little familiar with the game, but pretty much everyone knows an ace is good, and thus why the four aces hand is so pervasive. And for the record, I still don't care about poker, but my grandmother liked playing Texas Hold 'Em so I kind of had to learn if I wanted to be a good grandson. My inner child who was a huge Aerosmith fan is demanding I comment on Steven Tyler's offspring. Liv was his first child, though he didn't know about her for years. He had a second daughter with another woman roughly a year after Liv was born, Mia, and he was present for her childhood (at least, early on). She even got a song on the album Night in the Ruts. It's not a very good album, or song, but it's more than what Liv got for years!

You talking about Christopher Walken reminded me that oh yea they totally had him play King Louie in the 2016 Jungle Book Remake. Man Disney was kinda late to the party on that one.

I really want to say that I super appreciated Drew being on this episode (are you an Andrew too?) for his perspective bringing in modern Simpsons episodes. One of my main types of comments on this podcast is usually to talk about whether or not things come back in later episodes because as I always say I will watch the show every single Sunday until it dies or I do. Drew was really on point in this episode and I super appreciate it because now I’m not needed and I guess I don’t have anything to say other than I also really liked that every LGBT joke on the Simpsons video. I guess I’ll just end with this: the mafia jokes get my “I speak for all Italians“ stamp of approval. Johnny tight lips is a God tier parody character.

Idea: When another podcaster is a guest on the show and they are clearly using good equipment and recording their own separate track, you can play a new jingle of Dr. Joyce Brothers saying "I brought my own mic!"

Not a juggalo personally BUT I will not have any ICP slander! They had an very firm stance on COVID and how they would never want to have a big gathering of even one person was harmed. Outside of that, they are super lefty and anti-fascist and their clown makeup is one of the things that has like 100% blocked facial recognition software. Plus, Violent J’s daughter is a furry and he’s super supportive of her and even has his own fursona with clown makeup. I used to poke fun at ICP and juggalos but they’re incredibly accepting and care a lot about their fans

Drew and I have something in common - I also met Bob Mould in person and absolutely froze up. Thankfully he's really friendly in person, but man I just did NOT know what to say to one of my favorite artists. Just thanked him for the great solo show and he shook my hand and appreciated the kind words. His latest album, Blue Hearts is excellent, though I'm very biased. At the time this episode aired, I recall not being a fan but watching it now there's some fun scenes, the first act with Homer and Bart, Krusty's on-point dialogue and just about every scene with the mob. It's not as bad as I thought it was in first run, and Drew Barrymore was great as Sophie. Also - I'm from Michigan and reside near Detroit, so yeah, I have to comment on ICP. I didn't get it for a long time, but they're fun and very leftist/anti-fascist, I think they've transcended past the 'angry teen' stereotype into just being a culture that's all about embracing who you are. Punk music was that for me as a teenager and I rejected their ideals at that time, but seeing how the Gatherings and their fan community really look out for one another is something. Plus, they enjoy Faygo and there's nothing wrong with that, I'll take Faygo Cola any day over both Pepsi or Coke and it's cheaper. It's the people's soda!

Fun fact: There was actually only one hand that could beat Krusty's 4 aces: The Straight Flush. The Royal Flush was impossible since he already had all the aces. Also, very proud of the ICP for setting a good example during the pandemic by postponing The Gathering. Here's their graphic design nightmare of a message https://twitter.com/icp/status/1253103845644828675

Got to say I really liked this episode of the podcast, specifically because you guys all came to different conclusions. It was really refreshing to see pro, neutral, and con views. (I lean more towards Henry and Drew... )

Drew was getting me more hyped for the later seasons. Seems like there will always be a wealth of interesting topics to cover and different angles from which to analyze things, even as we drift away from the nostalgia heavy first decade of the show.

I would have assumed the “For Dummies” series was long dead until I came across a pile of 5G for Dummies books at a former employer in 2019. They were outside of a conference room after a meeting of management and/or sales. I was a RF engineer at a US cell carrier at the time. Usually you would find leftover cookies or catered sandwiches after a meeting in this office; a pile of booklets was a new one. It was actually a decently informative book on the broad strokes of 5G with a forward added from one of the carrier’s executives and the company logo on the front since it was a custom printing. Not exactly reassuring to have a company have printed and distribute for dummies books to its employees, but hey this carrier doesn’t really exist anymore.

Reading “The Shining” scared me, too! I got stoned and read it one afternoon in broad daylight and had to put it down out of fear.

Kris

So icp apparently cancelled the gathering last year. They where one the most surprising took covid seriously figures

Kris

Also, *throws zoology nerd hat on* You're mixing up sting rays and manta rays. Manta rays are huge talking 30 feet across huge. And unlike sting rays they're free swimming filter feeders And are typically not dangerous. I have to save typically cause they like to jump out of the water and have landed on boats with expected results Sting rays are akin to bees they typically don't sting unless threatened. One of Steve Irwins last actions was admitting he was at fault Also the rays you pet at zoos and aquariums are typically bat rays

Micah

From what I remember from Legs McNeil's "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk " (great book): Bebe Buell hated hated hated Steven Tyler after getting to know him which is why their time together was brief and why she didn't tell Liv. She tears into him so much in the interview in the book

Kat Heagberg

Really stoked to have Drew back. He’s one of my favorite guests, as I also love “Gayest Episode Ever” and “The Shelly Long Cast,” which I never would have discovered were it not for his original appearance on “Talking Simpsons.” More Drew in the future please. Also, as a native Michigander, I do appreciate the ICP defense from Bob and Henry. Juggalo culture is less sanitary than I’m comfortable with personally, but surprisingly woke. And I’ll never turn down a Faygo.

Mikey Cox

Great episode, Drew really is a nice guest. I would be happy to talk about Faulkner books with him. I disagree that it’s not worthwhile to read more challenging books, as I don’t think it matters if they’re “good” so much as they make you think about things from a different perspective and enable you to experience another mental realm. Saying that, I agree with Bob about Pynchon. Gravity’s Rainbow is a truly dense impenetrable tomb that I barely got through though you can see why maybe Pynchon likes the Simpsons enough to appear on it as the main character Slothropp is not unlike a World War 2 Homer Simpson.

I'm with Drew on this one, I really didn't care for this episode. It's not particularly shit, and there have been much, much worse episodes that this podcast has covered recently, but it just really fell flat and felt boring to me. Drew Barrymore's performance is good, but I definitely would've been more invested if they used Lisa at all to draw some parallels between the two Dan Casellaneta-voiced dads.

Blargh

Even though this episode isn’t fully political, you guys need to get Bret from revolutionary left radio as a guest if you want to hear super lefty takes!! He’s a great podcaster.

Boy howdy, can't wait 'til the 2000 election is finally decided so I can stop reliving it every week!
