We're heading back to the DCAU for one of the most successful creations ever born out of a stupid executive's idea! Yes, it's the teen Caped Crusader of the future show, or Batman-meets-Spider-Man-meets-Akira, all in one shiny package. We revisit this retro-future, dig into its history, and discuss the third episode, Black Out! Listen now, it's totally schway!

We definitely need that return of the joker WACM. Seeing that (even the edited version) was an event

I'm so excited about this. I think rewatching Batman Beyond as an adult when I didn't pay attention to this as a kid; I fell in love with it. I adore old Bruce Wayne being an old grump. I love Terry's character, and I like their relationship. It's another relationship of Bruce taking someone under his wing (haha) but Terry always comes off different from people like Dick Grayson or any other Robin, and I appreciate Terry's take on Batman and that he's willing to challenge Bruce when necessary. Now that it is more available, I hope that more people are able to see and experience this story to add to their Batman universe.

This is always the first show I think of when the topic of, "What's a show that surpassed expectations the greatest for you," comes up. This gave off the impression that it was just some cynical ploy to bring in young viewers, and to the executives at WB I guess it was, but they actually hired people who cared enough about the character of Batman that it turned out great. Yeah, there's definitely a lot of overlap with Spider-Man, and as good as this show was, it doesn't top the Fox years of BTAS for me, but it was surprisingly satisfying to see how the Batman character from those shows ended up. And there's a touch of sadness, and pity, to the Bruce character that I wish the show had been able to dive into more. Return of the Joker probably deals with it the best just because we get to see how his relationships deteriorated over the years with his allies. And it probably is to the writer's credit that they really tried to make this Terry's show when they could have devoted a lot of ink to just catching up with everyone from Batman, Superman, The Justice League, and so on. I do hope that WB revisits this universe. If it's the rumored Michael Keaton as Bruce film or series then that's great, though I do wish they took the opportunity to just finally let Kevin Conroy act as Bruce in either a film or series beyond the cameo he did for some WB show. He doesn't have the star power of Keaton though so I don't expect it, but man would it be cool to just see him playing this role in live action. I am largely indifferent to Funko Pops. They are not something I find particularly charming or attractive, but their existence doesn't offend me. I did end up with the Pop version of Batman Beyond Blu Ray because Amazon (I think?) had it at a steep discount. Unlike the BTAS set, this one does come with a boxed figure so you can put it on eBay or something if you wish. The whole set just comes in an oversized box that has room for the standard Pop box and the box containing the actual discs (plus some lithographs and junk) so it's easy to toss what you don't want. I think the non-Pop release (which was actually more expensive at the time I bought this thing so apparently Pops have negative value) is just the box within the box that contains the discs. That set is the retail set though sold at Target and what remains of the physical media market.

The Zeta project is interesting to me because I DO remember it and I DID watch it. It's funny cause they introduce Zeta in the first season of Batman Beyond and he has a much more inhuman appearance with a head that's just a round boomerang like thing. But when they make his actual show they give him a much more human looking head with eyes and a mouth. Zeta and his female companion even make a return in Season 2 of Beyond in a crossover episode that got marketed a bunch. Final bit of odd Zeta Project trivia is that the initial design for Zeta, the robot with the boomerang head, also makes an appearance in a Justice League episode. The same one that introduces their version of Power Girl. There it's just a killer robot that fights Super Girl. I'm probably the only weirdo who thought this, but I saw that robot and went "Is that Zeta?" even though I'm 100% positive they just re-used a prior robot design to save on budget. Great podcast as always!

Uh oh, sounds like a Patron pick resulted in a schedule change and thus a sneak peek at April! Or was it all... just as planned?* *translator's note: "as" is a conjunction.

Great discussion on this episode! Can’t wait for Return of the Joker...my FAVORITE Batman flick!

I'm slightly younger than Bob and Henry (and have two younger sisters), so I remember being excited for more Batman in basically any form in season 1, but I also remember that by Season 2, the WB network in my area had thrown it on at a weird time, early in the morning, and by Season 3, it was maybe like, 7 a.m., so I've seen all of Season 1 more than once, but basically none of Season 3.

There's an episode of The New Batman Adventures, "Mean Seasons" where they make fun of The WB's push for younger audience. That sounds like an indication that WB was pushing for a younger skewing Batman series even during the show's production.

Thank you for the history on Darwyn Cooke! I did not know he designed the opening for Batman Beyond until I started rewatching the series on HBO Max & saw his credit. I'm a big fan of his work & would highly recommend to fans of his AND the film noir feel of BTAS, his adaptations of the PARKER crime novels by Richard Stark especially THE HUNTER filmed as POINT BLANK (1967) starring Lee Marvin. And put me down solidly in the camp of those that did NOT like the plot twist of the appearance of Terry McGuinness in Justice League. What attracted me to the character in the pilot was that his meeting with Bruce Wayne was random & that in effect anyone could become the next Batman. That JLA plot twist destroys that premise in the same way that only those with midichlorians can become Jedi. It was that bad. Great episode, guys!

This was a great episode, can’t wait for the one on Return of the Joker. I might have to rewatch Batman Beyond again, especially because I remember that Egg Baby episode being better than it should’ve been but I need to be sure. Also, this understandably didn’t make it into your episode, but as a huge Batman fan I was so happy to Ace the Bathound get his due.
