Starting with Fritz the Cat, Ralph Bakshi made quite a name for himself as an underground animation director—and it all ended nearly 30 years ago with his infamous flop, Cool World. This live-action/animation hybrid aspired to be an R-rated Roger Rabbit, but came into being with an undercooked plot, surprisingly shoddy animation, and weak special effects. Listen in as animation historian Thad Komorowski (of the Cartoon Logic podcast) joins us in the first half to discuss the career of Ralph Bakshi, then stay tuned as we fully dissect every minute of this cinematic mess. You'll never know the difference between a noid and a doodle without this very important podcast!

Late to listen with my recent Patreon patronage, but just wanna say Cool World was less about the movie and more about the soundtrack (at least for this 90s rivethead) - Ministry, two TKK songs, FSOL ... I had a dubbed tape copy of this from my friend who seemed to have every industrial CD (mostly cuz he stole them lol) ... being able to hear Sex On Wheelz in a commercial setting was a special time to be alive

Paranorman is as close to a CG horror movie that ive seen. Its really good though. Lots of good horror references

Grant Baxter

I think the last "adult" CG animated film was Sausage Party, and I don't blame you for forgetting that.

God this movie was a miserable experience to go through. My friends thought I was insane when I tried to explain to them what happens in this film. I can’t believe this was a real movie that really got released in theaters. This episode was definitely worth the wait though. Your guy’s analysis makes even wretched stuff like this feel bearable

Every clip just reminds me of why I find this movie so incredibly irritating. There's just never *not* weird crap floating by in every scene. I think y'all are referring to Son of Sam laws when you're talking about Gabriel Byrne making money while in prison: he clearly still has a job and has been putting out these comics. Son of Sam laws just keep you from profiting off your crime, not any income at all, as prisoners do earn income (below minimum wage) if they work at the prison. Also, shortly before the movie came out, Son of Sam laws were found unconstitutional (the big case was the autobiography Goodfellas was based on), but there are still modified versions that require notifying the victim's family in most states. No rule stops you from writing bizarre comics about a horny cartoon character while in prison, though. At least, not yet.

Tricia

No disrespect to Thad but he seems like he wants to fight everyone in the animation industry

This is the day that Bob and Henry regret democracy

This was great, this movie is a real hidden gem and thank you for pointing it out. All of your unabashed praise has convinced me, I am now a fan. Hopefully this podcast causes a re-evaluation of this film and it becomes recognized as the masterpiece it has always been.

Ralph Bakshi: "Apparently that was also a lie" I saw this movie when I was like 7 or 8 . My parents rented it without knowing the content. I think I fell asleep before anything, that potentially could warp me, could do so. I will defend American Pop as really enjoyable but a significant part of it is about aspects Jewish experience in America from the early 20th century to present. With all the baggage and melodrama that entails bogging the narrative down a little bit.

crystalhearts

God this movie sucks and is also somehow not even in the top five most unpleasant Bakshi films

Bradley Given

Man, as someone who is also catching up with Blank Check and got to their Zemekis series I will say I did this movie no favors by deciding to watch it and Roger Rabbit as a double feature a few weeks ago. I don’t know what I could have watched that would have done this movie any favors, though.

As someone who generally has the opinion "you learn more from failure than success", I really appreciate your guys' sacrifice by covering this. ^_^

Cossover

The movie feel like a movie that a part of a tv show or a long run comic that they try to put in one movie

Bob and Henry: Braver than the troops

100% agree with your take on "if he's that much of a threat to your world, then shoot him in the face immediately. dont just say ~uhhhh dont do that~". - this is what annoys me about the Brendan Frasier Mummy movie. the job of the desert guards is to protect the tomb of an unstoppable evil force. when people show up and star poking around, FUCKING KILL THEM. dont just "warn" them of the dangers. absolute failure of duty.

Never one to miss a chance to shamelessly promote my own projects, it may interest/horrify you to know I'm working on some Cool World fan fic. Not the horny kind, I swear! I had a lot of time on my hands during lockdown and needed a fun light project to focus on so I finally found the time to write my Star Trek Next Generation meets Roger Rabbit fanfic. It's a holodeck-gone-wrong story in which the characters are trying out a new holonovel based on the all-but-forgotten film 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' and wouldn't you know it, the characters become real and run amok the starship Enterprise, creating a humanitarian crisis for the Federation as they are forced to reckon with how to deal with a new race of seemingly sentient holographic Toons. You can find it on A03, titled 'Persistent Visions' and I also employed my skills as a voice actor to perform a livereading, complete with a soundboard and props which you can find on YouTube. If you've ever wanted to hear Picard yelling at Roger Rabbit, this is for you. It was so much fun I've decided to write a followup set in the same continuity that blends Deep Space Nine with Cool World. I'm attempting to salvage the character of Holli Would, as the idea of a Toon wanting to become human is a very 'Trek' story, though I'm trying to portray her less as an evil woman using her sexual wiles to get what she wants and more as a sympathetic character who simply wants to escape Cool World because as discussed in this podcast, Cool World is hell. Look for it on my Ao3 and youtube channel later this year!

Thank you both for covering this. I voted for this for I know it was a bad movie but still important part of one of most interesting cartoonist.

Maybe the Doodles don't have genitals? And that's why they can't have sex?

Evil Chanteuse's Dork Lair

A few years ago I was really obsessed with David Bowie consumed everything he was involved in. So naturally I watched cool world, and forced my two close friends to watch it with me, and I gotta tell you... I remember 0% of this movie. Only the ending and that’s it. And I barley remember that. I must’ve blacked this movie from my memory. Calling Real Cool Word Bowie’s grand return really shocked me because I never considered it like that. For about four years before the movie came out Bowie was releasing (bad) music as Tin Machine, so I guess it was his return to using the Bowie name. To be honest maybe I only like Real Cool World because it’s NOT Tin Machine, because it’s mostly crappy hard rock.

This movie is just... baffling. It wants so hard to be a more "adult" Roger Rabbit but it fails in every respect and doesn't even work on its own merit. Until like 2015 my ONLY frame of reference for this movie was ads on the back of old comic books, and then I watched it for another podcast at the time, and just... my god I was disgusted, confused, and bored. Unlike with what's still probably the worst movie you guys have covered (Space Jam), I did actually revisit this one for WAC, and my feelings are still pretty much the same. This movie belongs in horny jail forever, and I feel bad for Kim Basinger.

I think Cool World is my least favorite Bakshi. Of course Roger Rabbit is the best version of this kind of movie, but honestly I think even Monkeybone is a more successful (at least in execution if not financially) version of Cool World. There are a lot of similarities, and it is so much more watchable.

beapeabear

What an irritating journey ( the movie, not the podcast) I first heard of Cool World by seeing a few screenshots of the SNES game while perusing my older brother’s Nintendo Power Magazines as a kid. I was slightly intrigued but never followed up. Years later when Rotten Tomatoes was a new thing I remember seeing it’s page while looking for movies with 0% scores. Of course that made me want to see it more than ever which I of course regretted upon actually watching the film. ANYWAY here’s my pitch for Cool World 2: a suicidal comic book fan with a crush on Holli Would learns of the inexplicably stupid rule for becoming a doodle and desperately tries to find a doodle to kill him so he can live out his days as an annoying cartoon character in his cardboard cutout dreamscape.

Everytime you guys mention Holly dancing on screen I just hear the sea captain going "Yar, she'll be dancin for hours".

Christopher Knisley

I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention the controversial advertising campaign involving the giant Holli on the Hollywood sign.

CitizenMeh

Really enjoyed this episode! I'd never even heard of Cool World beforehand (was it ever even properly released in the UK?), but checking out clips on YouTube, it seems to have the same incoherent, yet mesmerising grotesqueness of the recent 'Cats' movie. Also, a reply Bob made to one of my Tweets about this made me realise I've been mixing up my Bakshis and Bluths all these years...

christopher

I feel like Bakshi could have benefited from some focusyn while making this movie...

RJVanSchaick

So, I haven't seen this movie since I was 12 and it was one of those 90s movies I was thinking about looking up and rewatching. But then I listened to this podcast, so now I don't have to. Dodged a bullet there. Thanks, guys! You do great work!

Ratchet Shaman

I remember this ad in the back of Marvel comics at the time. It was effective, i did WANT to see it (for horny child reasons) but i never got around to it. Seems like that was for the best.

Holli Would and Lonette are, to me, hotter than Jessica Rabbit. As an adult, I can now see how hot Brad Pitt was then (I didn't find him sexy when I was 13). One of my fav trash movies. I rarely meet ppl who have seen this film, so I'm excited to see other ppl discussing it, even in a negative way
