Spring has sprung on the Talking Simpsons Network and it's a big one! We've got some big guests coming soon, some really cool podcast subjects are heading your way, and we're on track for another of our monthly $10 premium podcasts, so we'll need your help to decide what we'll be covering in June.

As you might know by now, we're staying so far ahead in podcast recordings that we've already recorded May's What A Cartoon Movie! (Cool World), meaning that in May we have enough extra time to record our June 2021 movie podcast, and we can start on that as soon as you choose the subject for us (and do we have a very fun expanded theme for you all this time)!

Just FYI: For those of you who are new to the Talking Simpsons Patreon, WELCOME. Also, you should know that once a month we release the What A Cartoon Movie! podcast, an extra-long discussion about an animated feature film, exclusively for our $10+ Patreon subscribers. And when we open up the voting for each month's subject, we want all the $5 subscribers to also have a chance to be heard too, so those subscribers can help pick episodes they might enjoy down the line!

Our next 2021 poll begins our new Summer of Disney Renaissance! For June (as well as July and August) we're going to let you choose our next film subjects from the formative years of Disney's renewed theatrical animation!

So here are the four early '90s Disney films you'll be voting on:

Beauty And The Beast (1991), the tale as old as time and a song as old as rhyme, it's the first animated film to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar!

Hercules (1997), we will go the distance in the film all about Disney's commercialization of myths which also features a real bop of a Motown-influenced soundtrack!

The Lion King (1994), be prepared for shining new era with this animalistic play on Hamlet that changed Disney animation from there on out!

The Little Mermaid (1989), it's better down where it's wetter in the gorgeous film that rebirthed the Disney theatrical studio just as the '80s ended!

So please, make your choice known before the poll closes on the night of May 7! And thanks as always for your continued support of our podcasts—we couldn't keep doing all our super-deep movie podcasts without you!

Gotta go with Lion King bc it was the one I grew up with on DVD

Chris K

I HAVE NO FIRM OPINIONS ONE WAY OR THE OTHER They're all good. Beauty and the Beast why not.

Paul

I think I normally would vote Hercules but I recently saw a very good Lindsay Ellis video about the movie so I feel up to date on it. I don't really know much about Little Mermaid though and as the first in the renaissance I'd like to hear more about it. If you ever think she's a guest that's gettable I think she would be great on any episode.

Frank Grimes

Lion King for nostalgic reasons (saw it at the drive through near my house as a kid in the 90's, and also got to take my god daughter to the 3D version in 2011!), but Little Mermaid for its importance and sparking the renaissance . Probably out that list, I don't really care much for Hercules (surprised it's in the lead, TBH).

SomeBloke

Hercules likely has the most interesting background narrative, but because of that I've heard a lot about it. The Little Mermaid, by contrast, probably has some fascinating anecdotes yet to be uncovered.

KaiserBeamz

Gotta go with Little Mermaid because we gotta kick the Disney Renaissance summer off with the movie that kicked it off in the first place.

John-Charles Holmes

All of these are solid winners but B&B is the Principal Skinner of the choices here-- seems boring on paper until you sit down and realize it's literally perfection

Cody C.

Gotta go with Hercules - fun facts about the Greek version courtesy of my partner if it wins

glowstickjuice

I voted for The Lion King because that was my obsession when I was 4-7. That said, I'd be happy to hear about Hercules.

Kevin Werner

If it was not for the late great Howard Ashman and Alan Menken making the music for Little Mermaid, none of the others would have happened. Like all that is listed here, but The Little Mermaid was the first major motion picture for the Disney Renaissance and Hans Christian Andersen works, leading to Frozen years later. Howard thought of this project for so long, as a gay man who died of AIDS before the opening of Beauty and the Beast, this he was grateful to see Ariel come to life.

Drew Frisbie

Hercules pleeease. Musker and Clements are the best

Charles Morgan

All good choices: The Little Mermaid - Start of the Disney Renaissance and would pair nicely with previous WACM podcasts on the Black Cauldron and Great Mouse Detective. Beauty and the Beast - The highlight of the Renaissance. Just to hear you talk about that James Baxter ballroom scene would be worth the price of admission. The Lion King - The metric for success that all future Disney animated films would be judged (until Frozen). Some might say it was all downhill from here. Hercules - The most interesting from a development and reception standpoint. Katzenberg's fingerprints are all over this one. James Woods' Hades is the highlight but also he sucks as a person so there's that. FWIW I would love to hear you talk about Hercules but you've also had a run of movies you haven't really enjoyed much. Ducktales and Shrek were fairly negative and I would guess Cool World will be much of the same.

Alex Irish

Hercules pulling ahead this early surprises me. Lindsey Ellis tore it down twice over the years, once satirically and the other critically

Rudy De La Torre

I saw Hercules once back in the day. The others I’ve seen dozens of times. Maybe I should revisit the Herc cuz I don’t remember anything about it lol

Joe Murphy

Hercules would be interesting to hear about as it’s the underdog to all these other Disney classics

MilesRose

Oh man, I think I saw TLK like 30 times over the summer the first year I got a ps2 and a tv in my room. Been one of my very favs just about forever.

crystalhearts

c'mon, mermaid! easily the gayest choice and therefore a shoo-in for me

littleterr0r

My vote is for The Erotic Adventures of Hercules starring Troy McClure!

RyoGeo

A tie in to Pink Floyd’s, “The Wall?” Gotta go Herc.

Gundark

I’m glad this GLADiator is winning

Joey Joe Joe Shabadoo

Cmon now people. We had to hear about the Duck Tales movie and Cool World already! Why not the one that was nominated for Best Picture!

Robert

Watched Hercules along with the animated Mulan last year, they are practically Disney's animated super hero and action movies. Can't wait for the history segment.

Joe Hodgson

This is the first time I really feel like the majority of Talking Simpsons patrons are younger than me.

Galen Ryder

I'm going with Hercules because I want to excuse to watch it. The others are better movies but I've also seen them much more recently since they got the Walt Disney Platinum release treatment.

Tricia

This is such a hard choice but I wanted B&tB covered for its 30th anniversary so I’m sad to see it in last place Hercules will do in a pinch tho

is marcy still burning

Any of these would make a great podcast, but my preference is beauty and the beast. Also its high time you do a poll for the films of Satoshi Kon. He's such an interesting director and he had four movies so it works perfectly

Severin Murray

Why are ya’ll voting for the worst of these four? I want to see these guys actually enjoy themselves for once!

Alex Irish

Are we just into delighting in torturing Bob and Henry? (I voted for Lion King, so I don’t)
