This week we're joined by first-time guest Kole Ross, cohost of the many great Duckfeed.tv podcasts, to discuss the season 2 ep where Homer goes too far. After a drunken night embarrasses Marge, the couple heads to a marriage retreat that's interrupted by a giant catfish. All that, plus the first "haw haw," the first appearance of Jailbird/Snake, the source of the Lisa drinking coffee meme, and tons more in this week's podcast!

Children of a Lesser Clod episode still happening? Not that I care for that episode or anything but just curious

Whens talking of the hill back guys?

The thumbnail image for this episode could only be General Sherman winking at the camera 😉

Nice, I actually just was rewatching this ep over the holiday break

In my family, Christmas Eve was the one night per year I could basically guarantee that I'd see the adults in my life get drunk. Save for my mom, who usually had to keep it together since someone needed to drive home. As a kid, I'd just notice it as people getting progressively louder and louder and laughing more and good old Uncle Big Dave crashing on the basement couch at my grandparents' house (they always had a party). It never bothered me and I guess I'm fortunate in that I can't recall a night where I was embarrassed by someone, just the a few occasions where my mom would be pissed the next day like the one Christmas Eve my dad couldn't tell her where the presents were hidden, either because he couldn't remember or he was being playful. He ended up getting them out himself (I think they were in his trunk). This episode is okay. I have a strong dislike for any of the episodes where Homer and Marge have serious marital issues and I think it's largely due to the difficulty in making Homer do something so bad that Marge would entertain the notion of leaving him. Because every day Homer is a selfish idiot that really no person should want to be married to and the writers don't want to have him do something awful like cheat on Marge because then the audience completely loses sympathy and there's no turning back. "Life on the Fast Lane" is probably the best they could really do since that was Marge becoming fed up with every day Homer, and it too isn't a great episode since Marge just comes around for no real reason at all. Sort of like this one! At least here we have Grandpa pulling a fast one on the kids and I do like that part, but yeah, looking forward to "Blood Feud."

This was an episode I hadn't seen in years before the DVDs and remembered being yet another "Marge forgives Homer inexplicably" episode, but it's really funny for a s2 episode. The realism in Homer just getting blackout drunk and embarrassing himself is just not something you'd ever seen a cartoon character do before this. And the "Queen of the Harpies" and Round Table bits are the most whimsical japes of the season!

Kole is such a polite guest! What an absolutely delightful person.

I never really noticed until listening to just the audio, but I think the songs played during the party might be cover versions (so maybe not *quite* as expensive as it seemed). Can anyone confirm? :)

Andrew Grieve

I can’t recognize all the songs - but The Look of Love, That’s the Way and It’s Not Unusual are definitely all covers, there’s something off about each song used in this episode, and the Jones’ cover artist is close but he doesn’t quite hit the notes like Tom does in the original. I don’t want to 100% confirm but I’m confident as both a music nerd and longtime public radio DJ that these are covers.

Something about Homer's "Why not, I paid for it" line sounds very Garfield-like to me when just hearing the audio. Maybe because Homer doesn't usually use quiet sarcasm, his sarcasm is usually screamed.

Great episode! Glad to hear some love for TheRealJims channel! His stuff is great, especially his alternate Who Shot Mr Burns videos. ^_^

"The ones at the bottom" is my least favorite Simpsons scene ever, it's borderline unwatchable

Oh nice, I didn't realise until after I listened but Kole was the cohost of my favourite Dark Souls podcast. Great guest!

First time I laughed at a guest's intro line

Couple random thoughts having listened to the whole cast: William Tecumseh Sherman was an...interesting figure to put it mildly. His middle name is probably where his nickname of "Cump" came from. Like Henry mentioned he's not very popular in Georgia and most of the South and he kind of has a mixed reputation in the North too, mostly resulting from his actions in the Indian Wars. Atun-Shie Films on YouTube does a video on the General for his "Checkmate Lincolnite" series if you want to learn more about General Sherman's Civil War and post-War life. Don't worry, the channel is firmly anti-Confederacy, the title is sarcastic. In terms of sayings popularized by the Simpsons, I'd also put "meh" up there in addition to "D'oh!" and "Ha Ha!". Meh gained a lot of popularity after it was used in Sideshow Bob Roberts, which I think was also mentioned on that respective podcast episode. And finally, the "bald guy on the fishing show" might be an oblique reference to Homer Groening? Somebody on the cast (sorry I forget who) mentioned they couldn't find who the bald guy was was during a search, but earlier on the show it was said that Homer Groening worked on fishing shows in Oregon. So that might be the connection? Not sure if Homer Groening is bald like his namesake given Matt has a full head of hair, but it's a possibility.

Not only is Ned a mixologist but he also has imported beer on tap in his rumpus room! I guess it eventually caught up to him when he became more animal than man and called out Ann Landers for being a boring old biddy.

So has Nina started sneaking the name Bob into all of her illustrations? Also, as a big fan of Watch out for Fireballs, I'm really happy you've had both Gary and Kole on the network now :D
