This month, we take a walk down memory lane with an episode focused on pre-digital porn, video rental stores, and a world before the post-911 surveillance state! When Hank's credit score gets mistakenly dinged by a computer error, he makes it his mission to fight the system—which involves learning a lot about pornography. Listen in to learn how Hank solves his legal woes, and why a Toblerone paired with a dirt bike makes the perfect birthday gift!

For what it's worth, I enjoyed Burning Rangers (although it would have better served technically on the Dreamcast). ^_^

Growing up we had multiple locations for Blockbuster Video, Box Office Video, Hollywood Video and a sketchy local chain called Oasis Video. The place rented games and movies dirt cheap and let you keep them far longer than any national chain. Unlike Blockbuster they carried hard R movies, foreign films like Battle Royale and Old Boy and yes a lot of porn. Guess which one lasted until May of 2021.

When it comes to music in pornography up until very recently, only four or five years ago there were still softcore movies being produced and aired on Cinemax and Showtime which always had original music. There were like ten or fifteen songs and they would just mix them up and every movie would have three or four of the songs and they made like a dozen a year. Definitely not in the style of the hacky music mentioned in this episode, but some of these songs are honest to God laugh out loud hilarious. One was just a cover of Smooth by Santana with the notes changed just barely enough to be legal distinct.

There’s so many things that can be said about this episode but I think I have to make my comment about this: does anyone else interpret the ending of this episode to mean that Bill had been renting porno under Hanks name the entire time? his guilt compels him to help Hank beat the charge but his shame prevents him from being able to admit it. I’ve always had the suspicion and my head canon is that Bill was renting porno under hanks name. I’m sure the reality of the situation is just that Bill really knows his porno but I like to think that there’s an extra layer to the episode that is very subtle. Edit: yes I know the timing doesn’t work out, but I just can’t shake the idea this is somehow bills fault

As someone who works at a Costco and works the parking lot cart duty sometimes I do have to say its more about using your brains then just returning it to the corral. Many times someone just shoves it in loose into the corral followed by no one else trying to put the interlocking carts together causing a giant mess and more work then if they just left it to the side. Also when the weather is bad its a miserable shift. I worked cart crew for a month full time and I almost had a breakdown because I was there for 8 hour closing shifts. The last two to three were cleaning up after the store closed. On a busy day or day when it was under staffed you'd just look and want to scream because the damn thing was a mess and you wonder what the hell you were doing all day and left with a mess that you seemed to have no affect over. Its like purgatory where what you did didn't seem to matter and you had to do it over again anyway. Though sometimes you get tipped helping someone which is nice. Though some employees go "We're not supposed to" if its a two person job and I just want to look at them and do a Carl style shut up.

My girlfriend worked at a TJ Max a couple years ago and getting people to sign up for the credit card was basically the ONLY thing the company cared about. She quit because of it. The only people who you could get to sign up for it was old people and people who didn’t speak good English because they didn’t understand what they were signing up for. Partly because the pitch you’re supposed to give specifically doesn’t mention that it is a credit card.

I owed like, $50 to a video store chain that I forget the name of now. They said I never returned Surf’s Up, which I did. The sent me letters, sent me to collections over $50. I ignored it and the entire franchise went under, so my apathy saved me 50 whole dollars. I liked to think my obstinance played a part in the company folding.

The conversation about signing people up at a video store brought back a ton of memories. I worked at a local chain for a few years right out of high school around 2004. So speaking of signing up new customers... One day a man and his son came in and the kid wanted to rent a game. The guy didn't have an account, so I told him he'd need to sign up. He seemed annoyed, but that's ok, it's an annoying process. He gave me his credit card and then I also asked for his ID. The guy snarkily asked, "Do you seriously need my ID?" to which I replied, "We do, just for confirmation so we know where our inventory goes." He was very huffy and irritated, but eventually gave me his ID. They rented the game and left. As soon as the door closed a lady ran up to the counter and excitedly asked, "Was that Tristan Rogers?!" We weren't supposed to give out customer info, so I just said, "Uh, it wasn't NOT him." And she freaked out saying how much she loved him on General Hospital. Turns out he's an actor who played a character named "Something Scorpio" (I don't remember the first name, but I remember the last for obvious reasons). I realized the reason he was upset when I asked for ID was because I didn't recognize him since, as I'm sure you know, most 18 year old boys in 2004 watched every episode of General Hospital. We also had a lot of people who would just run out of the store in a Dale Gribble fashion when we told them they had late fees. Video stores were fun.

can’t listen until later so sorry if you cover this, but when i rewatched the episode i really thought the animation was a bit weird. the one that sticks out most is Hank’s eyes get crazy when he’s about to read the letter attached to the casette tapes Bill dropped off. i had to rewind 3 times because i was laughing so much

"What else are you going to play on the Sega saturn" correction "what else are you going to play on a sega saturn that isn't modded to play japanese games." The console was worth it for it's capcom and snk arcade ports alone. All of which ran smoother with more frames of animation than their ps1 counterparts. If you were fgc there was a ton there for you.

All this porn talk has me "about to bust".

I will never, ever tire of your retail stories. Keep em’ comin’! In this episode in particular, I loved all of Henry’s inside info about what it was like to be behind the counter of a video store. I would one-hundred-percent listen to an entire episode of those stories. On a related note, I really wanted to thank you both for the super-kind comments and well wishes when you read my comment on the last “Talk To The Audience?!” about my husband and I getting laid off on account of online media platforms being terrible. It really made me smile, and also, I am happy to report that my husband is once again gainfully employed by a different (independent! For now!) media platform, and I am currently working as a part time adjunct professor (technically “adjunct instructor,” but the University says I don’t have to correct the kids if they call me “professor,” and I won’t). So we’re doin’ okay!

This was one of the most fun episodes I can remember. Thanks guys! Loved the show and the personal anecdotes! Even though there was a lot of porn talk. The "Re-Tales" were simply delightful. Really brought me back.

So Bob's first exposure to pornography was via sexy stories... Come to think of it, what's your master's degree in again Bob? 🤔 I'm sensing a connection... 😏

Watching Hank intersect with a world that confuses or horrifies him is never not funny. Transporting my mind back to the 90s and pornography also made me realize or generation (I'm around Bob and Hank's age) might be the last that has a sort of nostalgia for how pornography was consumed and discovered. I was one of those kids that found "Woods Porn," and the dumb thing about it was it was hidden in a Game Boy carrying case. Who is not going to notice a Game Boy case in the woods? We thought we might have found a video game device, but instead we found smut (and we're not unhappy about that). Though come to think of it, it was discovered in the woods between my best friend's house and an elementary school, so maybe we were supposed to find it and it was placed there by some creep? At any rate, it was a chore to come by pornography at a young age when now I'm guessing every kid is finding it pretty easily once they learn it exists and they have unsupervised access to a phone or PC. I just hope when the day comes for my kids they have sense enough not steal my credit card or charge things to a phone plan. Credit card and identity theft in general is such a hassle to deal with. I got an email last week from my bank saying they were alerted by a merchant that my card information may have been compromised so I'll be getting a new one any day now. My reward for the inconvenience of having to redo all of my auto-charges for that card is nothing. They don't even say what merchant it was so I can't even avoid them in the future if it was something I use regularly. I suppose that's to encourage self-reporting, but makes it no less frustrating. It's become ordinary though as I think this is the third time since the pandemic that something like that has happened. On one of those occasions I noticed fraudulent charges and when I went to the bank the guy who helped me out said that's basically all he does all day now because the theft is so prevalent. And it's usually through hacking, or skimming, but you get the occasional elderly person who voluntarily gives their info out to bad faith actors.

Wait! About Shaun Cashman, he DID come back for 1 episode of The Simpsons. He directed "The Tale Of Two Springfields" in Season 12. One funny anecdote about Shaun Cashman, he makes an on-screen appearance in the indie horror-comedy "Psychos in Love" as a boom mic operator in a meta moment in the film. Saw a screening of the film in 2019 and got really confused when I saw his name in the credits.

As a kid I rented games from Blockbuster all the time. I think twice we got blamed for not returning a game. Both times they found the games on the shelf. I guess someone didn’t bother checking it back in and just put it back on the shelf.

As for cashier stuff: I worked the register at a cafe (sold prepackaged food and made hot food too) during college and we didn’t have a delete button so the computer literally won’t let us remove an item once it gets rung up.

PurpleComet

I went into an adult bookstore a few years ago (I went in to get directions on how to get away from there!) and I was shocked to discover they still rent porn. This was in an area with easy access to broadband internet (or even 4/5G cell phone data) so there's plenty of ways to access internet porn. I assume that the customers skewed older and male but plenty of elderly people are on the internet these days. Are they keeping their business afloat by renting to luddites?

Credit card interest rates are a steal compared to the new way to get people in the cycle of debt: payday loan companies! In fact here in Ontario they are required to post a sign outlining the cost of borrowing $100 all in(interest and fees) and included in the disclosure is a statement saying fees and interest on credit card cash advances are often way, way cheaper.

Great episode. I lived in Humboldt County for a while, they still had a couple of rental places that had decent selections. By the time I left there was only one though. I still remember being blown away when my friend told me that there was a local rental store that wasnt a block buster and that they had a sectioned off place for adult videos.

My favorite 90s porno memory is when my friends and I found some adult magazines in the orchard next to our houses and made a porno tree by putting individual pages on each of the branches and yes, I still have the printed out photos to prove it.
