Season 13 has begun, so it's a perfect time to welcome back returning pal Eric Szyszka from the We Hate Movies podcast onto the podcast! Initially, we reflect on the first ep of Simpsons to air after 9/11, and then we chat about the episode itself. Part one is about a bunch of weird curses, followed by the voice of James Bond lusting after Marge, then ending with the oddity of a Harry Potter parody made before the first film adaptation. Protect your vulnerable shinbones as you listen to this week's podcast!

I was too young to experience 9/11 (born in 1999), but I do have a few personal stories related to it: I didn't know that the Twin Towers fell until I read a Dorling Kindersley kid's book on New York City, when my school was having one of those open book fair things. It was from 2000 (this was around 2002-2004 or so) and thus SUPER out of date. I remember excitedly showing my mum the book and she had to be like "oh, those buildings aren't standing anymore". Even with that it didn't really sink in until years later (2008), when I was reading a DK history book, this time up to date, and I was like "oh, oh THAT'S what happened." Down here where I live in Christchurch, New Zealand there's a 9/11-related memorial: Twisted bars from the towers that are displayed outisde in the corner of two intersecting bridges, and it's survived 20+ years or so and several major earthquakes. Even all the way over here we have a 9/11-related thing you can visit. If you want a good overview of the flaws with Harry Potter, I highly recommend the Shrieking Shack podcast. These two lapsed fans of the series go through the books chapter-by-chapter, and while it's VERY long it's also both really funny and insightful. I will always remember Katie Couric best for the infamous pun on her name in the classic Dreamworks film Shark Tale: "I'm Katie Current, keeping it current!" As a Star Wars nerd, I have to highlight another early-2000s fandom artifact, very similar to Yoda Man: The "Star Wars Gangsta Rap", a flash animation that was so popular at the time, but when you watch it now it's just.... wow, fans would watch anything back then? The movie House of Whacks seems to resemble the most is actually the Disney Channel Original Movie Smart House, from just 2 years earlier, which has since become something of a cult classic for people who watched it as kids. That's also about a super-advanced smart house (hence the title) that becomes dangerous and tries to take over the family, and get this: Not only is the director LeVar Burton (Geordie from Star Trek TNG), but the main AI is voiced (and eventually played physically, long story) by Katey Sagal. I've only seen clips from it, but man I cannot unhear Leela when she's speaking. I do find the Wiz Kids segment interesting for the reasons you mentioned, i.e. it was made before the first film came out so they only had the books to go on. It kinda reminds me of the pre-film merchandise or the early video games for HP, which is surreal to look at since the films now dominate the cultural idea of what it "looks like". To be honest, it reminds me that Potter should've just been another fun bestselling kid's series and not the multimedia empire it's become.

I believe the House of Whacks segment is primarily a parody of the horror film Demon Seed (1977). The film is about an AI (Proteus) that takes control of a home and holds the woman living there captive. Proteus has no issue with violence toward humans including murder. It does go a bit further than just the romance angle in the Simpsons version with Proteus ultimately conceiving a child with the captive woman.

The early call out that the middle segment aka Pierce Brosnan's Smart House is the best part and legit great is absolutely accurate, so much so that I always forget it's a SEASON 13 EPISODE. Hell, I think it's the best Treehouse of Horror segment since season 9's Fly vs Fly (though season 10's does have some very good ones as well). The whole segment is great, but shoutout to how they actually got Matthew Perry for one damn line in it -- As for the 9/11 talk, despite being a) Canadian and b) five years old when it happened, I do have a strong memory of my mom (who was home on leave at the time because of a workplace injury) watching the mid-day news coverage of what was going on as I about to be taken outside to catch the bus for my afternoon kindergarten class. I knew what the twin towers were thanks to movies & TV, and was able to comprehend that they were collapsing, but I didn't get the significance of it nor do I really remember specifically learning any of the who or why of the matter. So, while I do have some formative pre-9/11 memories, the bulk of my life has been spent not having really experienced how things were less fucked up for white westerners before that day.

Quick BAC talk from a former public defender: breathalyzers are not particularly accurate at the best of times, when they're not calibrated by rubbing against a cop's neck rolls. The more accurate method is a blood draw, but it looks like the house is getting a measurement from Homer's stomach. At Homer's weight (240), he'd have to have eleven units of alcohol in 3 hours (or 9 in 1 hour) to get to .15. In my experience, nobody blows a .15 or higher (highest I ever saw was .25) drinking beer.

Grumpy but friendly Chicago corrections: Chicagoans do eat deep dish and stuffed pizza, but it’s not the most prevalent or popular variety here. Also Malort is flavored with Wormwood so it tastes kind of like tree bark mixed with kerosene, it’s not licorice flavored like Jäegermeister. Funny episode, but I had to go full regional pedant.

I gotta think the blowjob thing is a joke/urban legend. just try to imagine someone saying the name “sylvester” while they’ve got a dick in their mouth

The early segments are solid, but the Harry Potter segment sucks so much. It kind of occupies a similar place in my head as Homer vs. Dignity as one of the things that pushed me away from the show. So many sweaty, gross jokes. It was a throwaway reference, but even at 80 year old, Hellzapoppin' is funnier, faster, and holds up better than this 20 year old segment. Check it out if you haven't. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2TOriWWSLE

Oh boy, so I finished the episode. During the clip you played with the extended vomiting, I became physically ill and started to vomit. So I hope in the future if there is that kind of sound you put a warning so we can hit the skip 30 a couple times. If you did it this time it wouldn't have saved me, because I didn't know I was sensitive to it. I watched the episode last night and was fine, but hearing it in headphones in high fidelity was a totally different experience and really got me!

I associate the switch from spherical Trix to fruit-shaped ones with The Addams Family. I think that came out around the time of the switch, and I would have seen it on video anyway likely after the fact, as the judge character tries to enjoy a bowl of that famous colored sugar corn until it's struck with a golf ball. I think it might show up later too during the hotel segment. I haven't had a bowl of Trix in ages, but as a kid, I liked the spheres. Now, I wouldn't touch the stuff as it barely qualifies as food. And yet, when Michele Obama tried to up the standards on public school cafeteria food she was roundly criticized by conservatives and I think those initiatives are gone. Even where I live in liberal Massachusetts, my kid is served garbage. Last year, he wanted to have the school sponsored snack when he was in kindergarten and we let him, until he told me he was eating Lucky Charms with chocolate milk poured over it. I hate being one of those parents, but we started packing him a snack after that. He can make terrible decisions with his lunch food when he's older like his old man did when I subsisted on Drake's food products all through middle school. This is a pretty great Treehouse and the best one in awhile. Yeah, the third bit is weak and I think that should have gone first, but I suppose ending on a segment where Bart is dead might be too dark. Definitely a top 10 for me and Pierce is fantastic

This episode reminded me of forgotten angst I had the week of of this airing! As a HUGE fan of Britney, HUGE fan of The Simpsons, and HUGE lover of Halloween it should've been great. But my I couldn't drive yet to buy her new album and I had to work that night at my high school job, Arby's. I tried to get my mom to take me to a store before she dropped me off, but we didn't have time. I also forgot to record the episode, but a friend told me they recorded it on their TiVo and that I could come over and watch. But when we went looking for it, it had been deleted by someone. So I was had to just wait for the rerun. :| For the album it didn't look like I was going to be able to get to the mall and buy it until the weekend and that was just too ridiculous for me 15yo brain. So on a break at work, I ran as fast as I could to a nearby K-Mart and sprinted back. Drenching my greasy fast-food uniform in sweat. I’m sure I smelled awful, but it’s Arby’s, so, ya know, everything smells gross at Arby’s.

Loved the episode, Eric is great! My read on the blood alcohol joke is that Homer asks for his BAC and Pierce pumps his stomach until he gets down to "only" .15%, implying that Homer was way more drunk than twice the legal limit prior to the tube going down his throat.

Eternals Stan here, give it a re-watch sometime, trust me it plays better knowing where it goes (but it’s also okay not to like a movie 😅)

I had no idea bout the wizard poop post-publication rationalization of weak plotting for the second book, or whatever reason. Man, that's just gross and stupid.

Frank Grimes

I thought the second short was based more on the Disney TV movie, smart house with Katey Segal. While they did have those smart home "horror" flicks before it, it seems like it would riff on smart house because that came out in 99, and was fairly popular.

Lockerus

I was in a Treehouse mood last October and I watched a few episodes I hadn’t seen yet. The Simpsons did another bit about a house AI developing an infatuation with a family member. In this case it’s an AI version of Marge crushing on Homer. They couldn’t get Emily Blunt or something? Also we have those garbage disposals in Canada but we call them “garburators” which confuses my American friends to no end.

Kat Heagberg

My mind was blown so much by all of the cereal revelations in this episode. Trix became fruit-shaped in the EARLY '90s?! Did I ever even eat the spherical Trix?! Probably not. Kix are just naked Trix?! WHAT. I don't even know what's real anymore. DID I actually send in a coupon from the back of the box voting for the Rabbit to get to eat the Trix or is that a false memory too?

Christmas Ape

The gibberish-spouting leprechaun was particularly popular among the twelve-year-olds at the time this first aired, that's for sure. While I remembered the first two segments of this Treehouse just fine, for whatever reason I forgot that the Harry Potter parody was in this one. Maybe it was because I missed that part the first time I saw it? It's also possible that I thought that there was no way they did an extended Harry Potter riff before the movie came out—usually, their Treehouse parodies are a few years behind. I mean, the last time I saw a new Treehouse of Horror on TV, they were doing a Coraline parody close to ten years after that movie came out. Kudos to them for being ahead of the curve that time, although it probably led to the segment having so many non-specific jokes.

top tier episode - im talking about you guys, most hilarious one this year so far

I have a shockingly relevant story about garbage disposals, since they came up. I've only ever lived in one place with a sink disposal and I was always terrified of dropping something down and destroying it. One day it completely stopped and I had to dismantle it to figure out what was going on. It was disgusting and awkward and what I finally pried out of the blades....was my partner's enamel pin of Marge as a witch from season 9. It was so absurd and I will forever associate treehouse eps with it

I decided to make the first post 9/11 episode covered my time to finally join the Patreon after sucking up these guys' content for free for about two years, like a leech. Since I was 21 when 9/11 happened (though safely in Madison, WIsconsin at the time), the images from it are still constantly in the back of my head all the time. I do remember watching this episode when it aired though by this point I was starting to turn into a nohomersclub forum lurking post-Golden Era hater.
