It's time for our final episode of the more maudlin second production season, and we welcome the great video essayist José! As Bart learns karate and Homer learns to not wish schadenfreude on Ned, we dig into the difficult production and the sitcom history of this sinister episode. Learn how "sinister" means "left-handed" and more in this podcast!

In Flanders Field was on the back of the old TEN dollar bill (which is purple). And yes, every single person who grew up in Canada knows this poem, and many can probably recite at least the first 2 lines.

As a fellow left hander, I liked the left handed representation in the episode, but god is Homer mean in this episode and the premise of using his wish for Flanders to fail is pretty cruel. I get that by the end of the episode homer ends up saving Flanders’s shop and it’s a good happy ending, but jerk ass Homer doesn’t sit right with me sometimes.

just an aside that, since subscribing early 2021, i've officially caught up to everything in the Talking Simpsons Podamatic Universe as of finishing this one! at the risk of being overly sentimental, you guys have really gotten me through the difficult moments in the pandemic, commutes to work, and long cooking sessions in the kitchen. sad to not have anything in terms of a backlog but excited to be more active in the comments as the eps are fresh! Please keep doing what you're doing and i'll gladly keep listening! (and paying!)

As a left-handed guy myself, all the jokes about left-handed things are VERY relatable. Also I think there's a subtler joke going on that it'd be easy to mistake the shop for being a store for leftists, as in politically. Later material has Flanders selling merch with slogans like "Left Power". Frankly that's a funnier joke, wish they could've leaned more in on. In terms of Jose, I'd love to see him cover Modern Family. That's such a "something that people remember but don't talk about as much now"-type series that it'd be great to analyse, as no one's done a proper Modern Family retrospective that truly captures all the highs and lows of the show. Also, Frasier, because that show still genuinely holds up. Not always, but enough to the point I'd recommend it to someone in 2022. As a kiwi the only things I know about Canadian football is through Jon Bois' "Tim Tebow CFL Chronicles", a surreal alternate history story where Tim Tebow drops out of the NFL to become a CFL player. Thanks to that, I learned Canadian Football was played *before* American Football, by just a few years. Love the shout-out to TheRealJims, I've been a fan of his for a long while! Hope to see him on the show, he'd be a great guest.

I've never cared much for this one. Apart from the humor in seeing an early full-on jerk-ass Homer at the BBQ, there's little to chew on. I just hate that ending. Is it sincere? Is there any irony at all? I'm always left waiting for a punch line that never comes. I do like this episode as a contrast to later seasons Ned. He becomes such a fundamentalist Christian that it's surprising that he's left-handed as that Ned would absolutely train that away much like Catholic and Christian schools once did.

I'm not left-handed but I'm ambidextrous so I probably *would* have been left handed if society provided me with left-handed ledgers. Instead, I'm left eye dominant and played all sports left-handed (I even changed shooting hands in basketball after being taught to shoot right-handed), but still learned to write right-handed.

Did anyone get Jose's last name and/or YouTube name? Definitely want to subscribe!

I have to give a little shout-out to the karate ad line about how breaking the block “didn’t hurt much” as opposed to the usual pitch line of “didn’t hurt at all” or what have you. Presumably meaning that despite all of the training, you still shouldn’t actually be breaking a block of ice with your face.

Parking validation included, there are so many Simpsons jokes I didn't understand until I moved to LA four years ago. I was honestly pretty excited the first time I encountered parking validation, like "wow! Just like the Leftorium!" No one is Flanderized enough here to do it for free, though, so that one wore off quickly. Also, Henry, I'm super jealous that you got to try an actual Karate class! My sister and I both wanted to so much, but the only ones affordable enough for my family were the ones taught by our local rec department, and they were always on the same night as our Catholic CCD classes that my mom made us take. To make up for it my sister and I would put on white shirts and tights, tie black tights around our waist, and repeatedly kick each other in the stomach until our Karate obsession wore off in favor of a generic Power Rangers obsession . . . where we instead put on pink and yellow clothing and kicked each other in the stomach.

For the record, I learned to drive in the US and now drive in Australia and it's really not a big deal. It's probably an issue if you drive a manual, but hardly anyone does outside Europe these days anyway.

Erin Hardy

I remember this commentary as the one where Jim Reardon makes a really racist joke about the Korean animators making so many animation mistakes because they had just recently evolved thumbs.

Kris Tanner

I love Jose's channel. This cross over is quite the cromulent surprise!

Lockerus

Totally uninteresting comment, but I’m right handed except for golf, hockey and baseball where I swing left handed. No idea why, just feels more natural. I’ve tried, I can’t do anything else left handed with the same deftness as those three specific sports.

Larry Franklin

The craziest one I think Cheers age-wise. When Kelsey Grammer is introduced in season 3, he's twenty-nine.

Jordan Peters

I’m a patron of Jose as well so it’s great to have this crossover happening.

Homer’s line deliveries in this episode have a real “80s Garfield TV special” quality to them

Thank you for the sidebar about Bloodsport, also a guilty pleasure of mine. In the credits, one of Frank Dux "world records" was that he had 56 consecutive KOs in a single tournament. Dux says it was a single elimination tournament, but what he didn't consider in his tall tale is that each time you want to add a round to a bracket, you must double the number of fighters participating. If you have 6 rounds, you'd have 64 fighters. 7 rounds, 128 fighters. And so on. For Dux to achieve 56 consecutive KOs in a single tournament, he'd have to fight at least 56 rounds. Which means there were over 74 quadrillion participants in the kumite that year.
