Welcome to the second season of Blabbin 'Bout Batman: The Animated Series! (And thank you for being a patron.) We're kicking off eight full weeks of this podcast series with an unlikely pick—and one not concerning a colorful supervillain with strange powers. This early episode shows just what the BTAS team could get away with thanks to its hard-boiled story about two middle-aged gangsters that gradually gets around to featuring the Caped Crusader. In any case, it's a seldom-talked-about episode, and we can't wait to discuss why it's so special. So sit back and listen, and be sure to watch out for oncoming trains!

Second season begins… and Kevin passes?! 😬

Eli Hernandez

I was ready to listen to this podcast when I just heard our beloved Kevin Conroy has just passed away 😢

Oh no! I just saw the news, am literally halfway through the podcast.

LoganTheWise

I might need a day or two for this one. You didn't play the jingle!!!! (I'm kidding because I'm depressed like we all are)

Eyal Shachar

Damn the irony of KC passing on same day. Can’t wait to watch all these as an homage to the great actor !

I've never seen it confirmed, but this episode always felt to me like one of those government-mandated educational ones. I think "The Underdwellers" was such an episode, but this one plays like an anti-drug PSA. It's not terrible or anything and I think the story is an interesting one for a children's show, but I also can't separate that scene in the clinic between Stromwell and his wife with that very famous "I learned it from watching you, Dad" PSA we all grew up watching. And wow, I just saw the news about Kevin Conroy. He looked like he wasn't in great health since he seemed to get skinnier and skinnier, so I'm not shocked, but still...he was Batman! The best Batman! How can the death of Batman not be shocking on some level? This has just ruined my day and I don't know how I'm going to concentrate on all of the stuff I was planning on getting done. Just a massive, massive, bummer and a huge loss.

It’s already been said hear but I was saving this podcast for my next bike riding opportunity, reading a completely unrelated article over lunch and seeing the news about Kevin Conroy. He was basically Batman in anything I actually cared about for my entire life (aside from Adam west of course). I never concerned myself with discussions about live action Batman, because I could always count on a new conroy performance showing up somewhere. He was the best version “Batman the detective” in my opinion. Or maybe I just can’t imagine batman sounding anyway else because in my lifetime it’s basically always been him. It’s a bummer.

RIP Kevin Conroy, like he was for many of us he was “my” Batman, specifically because of this show. That’s some rough coincidental timing. A gem of an episode, though.

Michael Branson

Yeah this is terrible. He sent my dad a very nice message last year on Cameo. What an astounding man.

Love you Kevin, you will forever be the voice of Batman in my heart and mind. This whole series is going to be a bit bitter sweet. But what a great way to relive some of his legacy!

Gundark

best/worst timing. rip

On a light note, the antipasto talk reminded me of a Jonny Bravo joke where Jonny gets attacked by a plate of spaghetti I think and he quips: This must be some of that anti pasta. I always loved that joke. On a serious note, it's heartbreaking to know of Conroy's passing. His voice is synonymous with the Batman character for me and to know he was such a good human being on top of playing a character I loved as a kid cemented him as the definitive Batman.

RIP to the GOAT Batman. Hearing today's news and the title of the episode...:(

To Boldly Joe... Moore

I was lucky enough to work with Kevin, once. I still can't get over how nice he was. ❤ RIP

What incredibly unfortunate timing (or fortunate considering we'll be celebrating Conroy's legacy till the end of the year on the podcast network). This show was before my time, but when I did eventually discover it, I was enraptured by its maturity in both style and substance. Kevin Conroy's Batman is one of the all time great Batman performances and perhaps even cartoon voices of all time. He will be missed... In terms of the actual episode's content, I, like Bob, am always astounded when kid's media just gets to be about adults going through shit. I remember taking a class about developing an animated series and my main characters in the pitch were in their 20's. My teacher encouraged me to age the cast down to about middle or high school age, and while I did... part of me wishes I stood my ground more and let them stay older. I feel like there's room for strong adult characters/issues in kid's media and I'm glad superhero shows like those DCAU can be that gateway into telling more mature stories for a general audience. Great episode and great podcast, guys! Can't wait for more.

I’m doing a count of how many episodes have gas attacks since my favorite TAS thing is all the villains have their own branded gas

Has this been pulled? I'm not seeing it in my iPhone podcasts feed anymore.

Carmine Falcone is supposed pronounced, car-mine Fowl-cone. The e is usually silent, the way people often pronounce it would be spelled Falconi for the hard e at the end. It's a who Ra's Al-Ghoul thing really.

Extremely bittersweet timing on this - I was 1/3 of the way through the episode when I saw the news about Kevin. He will be extremely missed and I'm bummed out I never got to meet him and express how big a part of my childhood (and continued everyday life, really) he was. RIP. -- As for this episode, it's DEFINITELY not even in the bottom half of BTAS episodes, but it's definitely one I was always kind of like "oh, this one again" when it would come on as a kid or when I was doing my nearly annual rewatch of the show. It wasn't until I watched it again with the Blu-Ray set that I really appreciated how simple and lowfi this episode is, and how no other American cartoon of the day was doing this kind of thing. I also appreciate the use of Rupert Thorne over it straight up being Falcone or Maroni (even with the changes they made), thanks in part to how many times we've seen Falcone in the past 20+ years.

Rest in Power to the Dark Knight Kevin Conroy
