This week for this episode about motherhood we're joined by special guest Karen Chu of Good Job, Brain! who helps us better understand Marge's need to visit Rancho Relaxo after a nervous breakdown. We get Troy McClure as our video tour guide and learn about omelets, blackhead removal, baby car seats, stealing lightbulbs, and more. When listening to this podcast, be sure to grab Clamato, Mr. Pibb, or soy milk!

In the U.K. at least Right said Fred are vey cancelled - big anti Vaxers and are always spouting nonsense on Twitter .

I found a fountain selection for original mr. Pibb but I’m sure it was pibb extra and just using the old label cause too lot to change and close enough to the product coming out of it.

Not that I wish death on anyone, but I do look forward to not having to deal with the older generation that came from a Simpsons-like household with a working dad and stay-at-home mom. I think younger Gen Xers and most millennials have a better parental dynamic at home. Yeah, some of that is brought about by necessity and the need to have two incomes which sucks, but a lot of it is also both parents want a career and they're better co-parenters as a result. I'm willing to bet every dad in my age group has received that annoying, condescending, remark from a well-intentioned older lady when out with their kid by themselves that's something along the line of "Oh, I see dad is babysitting today." No lady, this is my kid and I have errands and I can't leave him home alone. I am not and never will be a babysitter to my own kid. Even though both of my parents did work, when I was little my mom did not have a full-time job. She would work from home which just involved spending some time making phone calls as she worked for the Census Bureau. I can definitely see some of my mom in Marge in this episode, and while I didn't recognize her as being strung out as a kid, I did notice how she would have a short fuse with my sister and I and I think that's just because she had to spend more time with us and by the end of the week she was done. Dad got to be the fun one as he had a 9-5 and when he got home it was time to play, and I do feel bad for my mom as a result. She did go on a vacation at one point when I was 7 or 8 with some of my aunts, and while my dad is far from a Homer, I always associate that week with the quality of the food going downhill as my dad was no cook. We definitely had Spaghetti O's with sliced hot dogs at one point that week.

something that just clicked today while you were discussing the re-use of “Boh”…. In Burns’ Heir the Homer impersonator (Michael Caine?) says “Boh” before Burns walks in and corrects him. I wonder if that was sort of a dig or reference at the re-use of the clip in earlier episodes

‘May your Christmas Days be nice’ was from a popular commercial at the time. Couldn’t tell you what for though.

Homer's little 'may your Christmas days be bright' lullaby probably one of my biggest laughs of season 3

Loved the talk about maternity/parental leave. Something many don't realize about this is that for many jobs, parental leave is just a promise that you won't be fired for taking time off to care for your newborn. Most jobs won't pay you for that time unless you have other leave accrued. Also they don't even have to give you parental leave if you've worked there less than a year!

This is one where we're firmly in the Golden Age, where you can't run into *any* reoccurring character without there being some depth. Re: the Road Runner rules, Bob Jaques and I covered it in our Cartoon Logic podcast years ago... no, there were no actual written rules, but the cartoons generally do follow them in spirit (Bob was less convinced; I argue that all the worst RR material in the original Jones-Maltese cartoons is usually when they don't adhere to the "rules").

On the history of morning show shock-jock hoaxes, I think the Bill and Marty joke in this episode may be a reference to a bit from a pair of LA morning show hosts that was very infamous during this era. Back 1990, long time KROQ morning jocks "Kevin and Bean" had a buddy call in for segment called "Confess Your Crime" to make a fake murder confession about killing his girlfriend. The gag went way over the line, the LA Sheriffs opened an investigation, and it was even featured on "Unsolved Mysteries." Through it all Kevin and Bean played it like it was all genuine. The denouement came ten months later when they were caught discussing the hoax on an internal phone call monitored by the radio station. The end result was that the sham was revealed, Kevin and Bean had to perform 150 hours of community service, and KROQ was reprimanded by the FCC, the lightest penalty the FCC can issue. I'm sure shock jock expert and friend of the show Murder Bryan probably knows even more about this case. Remarkably, Kevin and Bean continued to host the same show for decades!

I would just like to step back and just appreciate the surpassing level of genius that this show reaches. I first saw this episode 30 years ago when I was 11 or 12 and since that first viewing I’ve been laughing imagining the context of why Troy McClure would be telling Dolores Montenegro “have it your way, baby” in a movie titled “Calling All Quakers.”

Great episode! A couple quick notes I thought of: The MacGyver reboot lasted five seasons (95 episodes), and got decent ratings, but one of the main executive producers was (allegedly) an abusive dick. CBS ditched him, and rather than retool the show without him, they cancelled it. And the thing with Lisa wanting the pimentos punched out always seemed odd to me because the only lunch meat you really find pimentos in is olive loaf or pimento loaf, so is Marge purposely buying that stuff knowing she'll just have to rework it for Lisa? It did remind me a little of how growing up I didn't like the peppercorns in cotto salami, but those don't make the giant holes from this episode.

If Q-tips are not made to clean ear wax then why are they explicitly shaped like it. Flagrant false advertising as Otto would say.

Are things better for mothers now? Not if you ask any of my female friends/family members who are mothers. It's just anecdotal, but their male partners don't do anything close to 50% of the household work.

Ah, I never knew that about the bridge that Marge stops on. I went on a tour of Portland on Wednesday as part of a work thing and the tour guide pointed out "Suicide Bridge" aka the Vista Bridge several times for some reason, once when we were driving across it and then again at the bottom in the Goose Hollow neighborhood.

Karen was such a great guest! I was a little skeptical when she mentioned not being a huge Simpsons fan but she had such charismatic energy and wonderful observations (the point about Maggie's feet is so insightful). Nice job, guys! Loving the revisited episodes

You guys are absolutely right about how naming this episode after Homer, despite it being a Marge-centric one has to stem from someone being nervous that the audience wouldn't tune in, which is obviously some big BS. It ALSO bothers me because there's so many bad titles that don't really indicate what the episode is throughout the show's entire history, and Homer Alone is actually a GOOD title, other than that it suggests Homer as the focal point for the episode (and can kind of be confused with Homer the Heretic) -- Also, Karen was a great guest and it was nice hearing her perspective on the show as someone who isn't super familiar with it, but still had a lot to say

Another note from the Department of Corrections: the jalapeno popper video is staged. They're just an odd couple on Tiktok that upload planned bits of them teasing each other. There's another vid where they're both chuckling about how many views that video got and how everyone wants to kill him

The name Rancho Relaxo always makes me think of an ad my parents have referenced since I was very young for a Latino-focused bank called Banco Popular that did business in the NYC region. There was apparently a running line throughout the ads of "Banco means bank" which my parents have found hilarious for decades (I have been unable to find a clip of this ad on the Internet despite a decent amount of searching so I only have their memories to go on). I've always kind of wondered if some of the boomer writers on The Simpsons also saw this ad and used it as inspiration for Rancho Relaxo's corny name and "You can't spell Realxo without relax" tagline. So then, Rancho means "Ranch." And Relaxo means "relax." And that concludes our intensive three-week course.

OH NO! SINGLE DIRTBAG SKILL! I'm a cook, which is a profession full of dirtbags along full spectrum from likable to not. A friend cook 10 years ago had this story he was always bringing up that "one time I did a Bop-It for like twenty minutes". It was I guess in a toy store and he blew the mind of a young child watching him.

Speaking of multiple cheese omelets have yall seen the weird romantic fanfic some straight lady wrote about buttigieg meeting his husband? There's a 3 cheese omelet involved.

Really great guest. I really enjoy having a perspective outside of the "I grew up watching the simpsons, and especially with syndication and my station was a bit special because it played two episodes every weekday"
