For this special episode about Selma Bouvier, we have a big-time returning guest, the creator of Steven Universe, Rebecca Sugar! (Check out her new album, Spiral Bound, now!) After discussing her history with the show, we dig into this story of parenthood, theme parks, funerals, and lizards that all have something to do with the fourth season of Murphy Brown. Learn about all of that and whether grocery employees wear belts in this week's podcast!

Why are your voices so quiet and the audio clips so loud?

Rebecca was such a great guest (again)! I can't believe their last appearance on the show was pre-pandemic, but boy am I glad to have her back now. Usually long episodes with guests are a blast because of all the tangents about their own work and whatever personal perspective they bring to the episode, but Rebecca's own experience working in the medium of animation is always a treat and this was such a nice surprise to see when the episode went live late last night. Hope to see them back again sooner than another 5 years! I will definitely be checking out her album now that I've been properly reminded of it. -- I'm here to voice my support for suspenders! They hold up your pants super well, they don't bunch them up awkwardly around your waist like a belt can, and they give you something to fidget with. And they just look cool IMO

swallowing theme park water is definitely no Bueno....happened to me as a teen when I went to Great America (theme park in the Bay Area). Friends and I rode the rapids ride, as well as went through the fountains that spray water, and accidentally swallowed some...and i ended up with strep throat for a week or two. it was horrible

Three hours? Woohoo! Cheap podcast content! (ambulance sounds)

For the past few years, my dating profiles have just been me referencing Selma's video and I can count the guys who have gotten the joke on one hand. (Not the begging for a baby part. I'm good with my canine Jub Jub.)

Rob MacBride

Isn't Jubjub from Jabberwocky?

Bob, I only know this because out of some weird coincidence I watched the Twin Peaks episode in question last night. It was Madchen Amick’s character Audrey that tied the cherry stem in her mouth as a sort of audition at One Eyed Jacks.

There's a Tiktok from last year of some guy on Splash Mountain filling his water bottle with the water and taking a big swig of it 🤢.

Jokes on Homer, in 2024 everyone wants to make it with a robot.

Yeah, Bromine's an alternative to Chlorine, it's used more often in infinity pools and hot tubs, specifically indoor ones. Honestly way more pleasant of a smell and less harsh on your skin than chlorine. My grandparents had an indoor infinity pool that was literally just in a room in their house and I'll never forgot the waft of it. Also the pool loudly filtering in the middle of the night 10 feet from the guest bed.

Listening to this discussion now decades after I remember watching the episode, it really strikes me (now that I flipped from child to parent-of-children) how subversive this episode is on two counts. One, this episode confronts an unspoken assumption a lot of non-parents have about kids. That is, that parenting is basically easy and if your kids are acting up then you’re just negligent. Parenting is hard and this episode nails it. Second, and not unrelated to the first point, parenting is not some kind of self-help “cure all” for people who need a purpose in life. It’s a job that isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay! It’s totally okay that Patty and Selma find meaning in their lives in other ways. Anyways, this is now a Top Five episode for me. Great discussion, thanks guys!

It always bugged me that they use the same character model three times in this episode. The waitress at the diner, again during the Moleman date and a third time behind the desk at the sperm bank. Has anyone else noticed this?

Great podcast on one of the truly great, underrated episodes, probably because it's actually poignant and not about one of the main cast. This is where they've really figured out how to get more life out of the same series by making it "Springfield" and less "The Simpsons".

I took my family to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg recently and the Escape from Pomeii flume ride is much worse than you'd expect! There are mounted water cannons that you can pay money into that will allow you to spray water on the people on the ride after the big splash. So even if you manage to stay dry from the ride itself, someone (likely a friend) will have paid to make sure you get soaked.

I second Bob's experience of having something stuck in your head while you're sick. I'll often have a random part of a random song looping in my head while I'm feverish. It's maddening. If you ever do have a sign stuck in your head, I've found you can fix it by 1. Listening to the whole thing especially the ending 2. Listening to something else 3. Play an equal or more powerful earworm song to replace it (Barbie girl, I'm blue, Mambo no5, etc.)

I agree with Hank. The pimply teen absolutely should want to hook up with Selma. Kind of ridiculous of the (maybe) 18 year old not to be physically interested in this desperate middle-aged woman
