Take yourself back to a simpler time of 1929/1992 as we discuss another Hayao Miyazaki classic on What A Cartoon Movie! Originally intended as a 30-minute short film to air on Japan Airlines flights, learn how Porco Rosso grew into a feature film that was a tribute to Miyazki's bygone youth of aviation adventure. And after we go deep into its creation & international releases, we go scene-by-scene through this gorgeous flight over the Adriatic with our favorite middle-aged pig-man. Listen to this podcast to break the curse!

Porco is my favorite Ghibli movie, so this was a delight. I think it's one of his most picturesque films but I say that as someone who loves the Mediterranean landscape and the sea, so it's a setting that feels tailor-made just for me. I only saw it in theaters for the first time this past summer during the annual special releases of Miyazaki movies and was pleasantly surprised that it was a full house given that this one sometimes feels like it's left out of the conversation when compared to the likes of Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle. I want more Porco Hot Topic merch instead of Calcifer, damn it!

It’s funny, I think Michael Keaton’s performance as Porco sounds more like Batman than his actual turn as Batman Also it’s kinda neat that now 3 Batmen have been in Ghibli dubs

yeah creaming the ramen with an egg yolk really adds a nice full flavor. Great with Katsu on top!!

Great episode as always! Speaking of blatant references to other animation studios and/or characters, you need look no further than 2021’s Pixar film ‘Luca’, about a literal fish out of water who leaves the sea periodically to live amongst humans in a somewhat familiar looking postwar Italian town. The name of this town? Porto Rosso. It’s perhaps not quite as on-the-nose as Donald Chuck (AKA Donald Curtis), but seeing as the director of Luca openly cites Miyazaki as an inspiration, it seems to be another pretty blatant tip-of-the-hat between animation studios. On a separate note, I’m British, and runny eggs (though not too runny!) are definitely the way to go! Anyway, great job guys 👍🏼 I’m already preparing myself mentally for the trauma of next month’s Chicken Little watch-through.

I always loved when Cowboy Bebop would outro with a sad music box. Got me every time

Senshi from dungeon meshi/delicious in dungeon canonically gets panty shots in the manga (and iirc, is the only one that does).

"Grandma" is absolutely being used as a general term for an old lady, not with any actual blood relation Also, hips = butt in Japanese, so the "butt looks big" line is an accurate translation
