“Enough,” she nodded, reaching deeply into her magic, calling out to the elements and something answered.
The change began so suddenly that for an instant it was felt rather than seen. The concrete beneath Jason’s boots vibrated, hairline fractures spreading outward as green-gold light rose through them. It was as if something buried beneath the city had suddenly opened its eyes. The gang continued firing, but the rhythm faltered as Jason straightened and the man they had spent the last several minutes struggling to overwhelm began to grow.
His already enormous frame expanded violently upward and outward. Muscle thickened beneath skin rapidly disappearing beneath dark fur, his shoulders broadening until the silhouette standing behind the shield ceased resembling anything human. His face lengthened into a lupine muzzle, teeth becoming predatory fangs as clawed hands formed at the ends of arms capable of tearing through concrete. Jason had already been an intimidating man approaching six feet in height.
The Wolfkin rising in his place stood at nearly eight.
His pendant flashed, and the hammer appeared in his hand, Gaian energy racing across its surface. Then along Jason’s forearm and through enormous claws that glowed with the same living power. The ground reacted to him as though recognizing one of its own weapons. Cracks widened beneath his feet as dust jumped from the pavement. Nearby weeds forced themselves through places where nothing green should have survived.
“What the fuck?” one gangster gasped, staring as the firing weakened.
Jason’s transformed ears flattened beneath another volley, and then Sheena’s magic answered his. Not because Jason had awakened something inside her that wasn’t already there, but because their power had always recognized and amplified the other. The pulse that traveled outward from the Fang of Gaia reached Sheena and returned transformed into something entirely different.
She didn’t grow into something monstrous but instead became something… regal.
Gaian power moved over her skin in luminous patterns: sweeping lines and symbols evoking earth, moonlight, falling rain, vegetation and the endless movement of water. Their shapes carried echoes of Kongo ancestry without becoming a costume or imitation of something frozen in the past. This was Sheena; modern, living and standing upon the soil of her father’s ancestral homeland, while something immeasurably older spoke through the blood and magic she carried.
Her mace appeared in her hand and changed.
The haft lengthened until the weapon could be wielded like a staff, while its heavy head broadened into something simultaneously ceremonial and brutally functional. It remained a mace when Sheena needed one, but in both hands it became something more: a focus through which the living world could answer her.
Beyond the warehouses, the Congo stirred, and Sheena inhaled sharply.
For one impossible instant, the river didn’t feel distant at all. She felt water moving against banks, roots drinking from damp earth, wind traveling over the enormous surface and life clinging everywhere along its course. Beneath her feet lay soil buried by concrete but never truly conquered by it.
Behind Sheena, darkness seemed to gather, and leaves moved where there were no trees. Moonlight traced the suggestion of a colossal feminine silhouette without giving it a face. Rain whispered through air that remained dry. Earth, vegetation, river and ancestral memory assembled something that wasn’t literally a goddess and never became fully physical, but its presence was unmistakable.
Sheena opened her eyes, and the Congo answered.
Phalmina felt that response pass through the air and laughed, but it wasn’t her usual mischievous laugh. There was something older and distinctly royal beneath it.
Her wings opened, and light exploded across them.
The Amazonian Fairy who had spent so much time allowing enemies to see something pretty, harmless and easily underestimated simply stopped pretending. Phalmina rose from the ground as royal magic poured through her, her wings becoming broader and infinitely more elaborate. Every membrane caught and refracted light until they appeared almost aflame without producing heat.
She was the daughter of Queen Amalthea, and tonight she looked it.
Her pendant opened into light, her spear and shield materializing in her hands, but neither remained mundane. The spear lengthened, its point blazing with concentrated fairy magic, designed to end her foes. Luminous patterns moved across her shield like heraldry belonging to a kingdom older than most human nations.
A gunman took aim, but Phalmina smiled as suddenly there were two of her. The shooter jerked his rifle between them, then it multiplied to four. Another man swore as Phalmina multiplied again. Eight became ten, each winged warrior princess moving independently. Some were airborne; some descended toward the ground, but every one carried the same awakened spear and shield. The gang’s spotters began shouting contradictory directions, trying to track the real one.
Rosa remained beside the dead man and closed his eyes, granting him his final peace.
For a moment she watched the other three change, and some old part of her; the woman who had survived by running, hiding and staying one step ahead of things stronger than herself, whispered that she didn’t belong among them. Then Rosa looked at the man she hadn’t been able to save and rose to her feet, calling to her magic.
Ix Chel’s inheritance answered.
Moon-white and green-gold light moved upward from Rosa’s feet, assembling itself around her body in overlapping layers. Armor formed without hiding the powerful woman beneath it, sleek and unmistakably modern despite the ancient divinity behind its creation. Luminous markings spread across her exposed skin, carrying suggestions of moonlight, water, healing and life.
Her staff appeared and transformed with her, becoming an elegant fusion of ritual focus and battlefield weapon. Its upper curve held a glow reminiscent of moonlight reflected upon water. Rosa felt Gaia and Ix Chel within that greater whole. Not a dead goddess lending power from somewhere beyond the grave, but a legacy reconciled and carried forward.
