I understand taking care of your wife after a surgery, keep the boss happy. If you can keep on top of everything and not drop your quality of storytelling.... go for it.

I think the art program would take more time away from you and your wife as well as your writing it is a nice thought but the stories and having some down time are of greater importance to keep your stress down and mental health in a good place.

I would go the commission route. A lot of people don't realize the amount of time it can take to create images. My ex is a professional photographer/ illustrator. She easily spends 40-50 hours a week just editing pictures and creations. Granted she normally has multiple projects at the same time, I think you would to if your were to get the hang of it. I feel you might would want to try and create art for all of your stories you are currently working on and from personal experience it cuts into relationship time. IE you could either take more time away from working on writing your stories or lose some quality time with the wife. My ex got my hooked on amatuer photography of nature and family and even then i can spend 10 hours a week editing photos I take. Simple stuff like flowers, waterfalls, animals, vibrant foliage street art (graffiti) or really just anything that catches my eye. So it can be time consuming if you don't pay attention.

I will agree with the others, taking the time to learn to illustrate and create your own artwork is very time consuming and if you're already running low on time your best going the commission route. While working with your audio, it definitely is clearer however you should add a pop screen or pop filter to the microphone. It will help filter out some of the inadvertent pops and other audio bits that pick up from the mouth that are not intended vocalizations
