Pi Day Poll: Which Video Should I Make?
- 1. Gentle Piano Mathemusics 34
- 2. Traditional Pi Day Rant 103
- 3. Break the 4th Wall 115
Once the annual Pi Day video became a thing, I started collecting ideas and will often work on a few before I settle on which to produce. Over the years the drafts and ideas for future videos have built up rather than gotten used up, and this time around for my 8th annual Pi Day video I've been working on three different videos and I can't decide which to commit to!
Next week is a production week. I have nothing else on my schedule besides nitty gritty video work. But I need to focus my time on just one of the videos to be ready in time for Pi Day, and I'd like you to help me choose.
Here's our options:
1. At first this year I thought I'd finally do a gentle mathemusical one that uses the digits of pi as a melody, but chromatically (so that the melody uses 10 of the 12 tones instead of just the ones in the major scale, repeating a few).
I wrote the piano piece four years ago but then it was Super Pi Day (3/14/15) so that year's video had to be about that, and the year after was a very important Round Pi Day (3/14/16), and then the next year I was really into Venn Diagrams because of other research and so I wanted to make a Venn Piagram anyway.
This chromatic pi music video can pretty much wait for any Pi Day since it's not tied to a particular year or story. Is this year finally the year?
2. I also have a more traditional Pi Day rant script I wrote 2 years ago but scrapped when I decided to go with a different one that fit the year better, about how many digits of Pi you really need in a practical sense and what would change if the digits weren't exactly what they are.
I've been working to adapt that one into one that fits this year instead, and it's working pretty well (a big improvement over the 2-years-old version). The theoretical question of why Pi has to be exactly Pi is a fun one, not that I have as much insight into it as I'd like! The script also continues the Pi vs Tau controversy storyline.
The setup for this video would fit this year better than 2 years from now (I have a concept for next year already), though the meat of the video works anytime.
3. I accidentally ended up with a third script draft when I was writing what started as a blog post about my 2016 Pi Day video, which I thought was a pretty thinly-veiled allegory demonstrating the ridiculousness of divisive manufactured controversy between people who are fundamentally on the same side: It's a parody of the politics going on at the time, containing lots of political rhetoric with the nouns switched out for "Pi" and other math terms.
As far as I can tell, no one picked up on that. But it's even more relevant now, so I thought maybe it was time to be more explicit about the history and intentions behind the Pi vs Tau controversy story, co-created between myself, other mathematicians and audiences, other youtubers and youtube algorithms, and how our participation in this low-stakes all-fun-and-games math fight could maybe help us be introspective about where and when we choose to exercise our suspension of disbelief.
Here's the 2016 video, and the entire Pi and Tau video playlist, for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vydPOjRVcSg&index=12&list=PL5F03A9D6D278C5D9
So those are our choices! I'm very particular about my work, but not necessarily about when it happens, and it'll all get out there eventually, so I'm really stuck on which to choose. I can't do any of it without you anyway, so go ahead and vote on whatever you're feeling for this month.
Also I can always go against the poll numbers if your comments or something else convinces me one way or the other, so don't worry about it being a High Stakes Poll Situation.
