Hello good humans!

I'm very excited about this video. I've really fallen in love with scutoids in the past few months, and I hope the care and attention comes through.

I appreciate your being patient and supportive as I obsessed over how to make the perfect papercraft scutoid, how to film in VR180 while still maintaining my style, and obsessiveness about every single prop and shot and word. It's done! It's out! I hope people like it both in and out of VR, and that it serves as an example of what the format can do beyond vlogs.

I've also created a scutoid webpage, still a work in progress but that collects all the bits I've talked about in these posts as well as other info.

Now that the series is started I hope to have the next couple videos out soon (meaning in the next month or two). I'm working on one just about how to make them that will go into the papercraft versions more, and then a video on monkey bread (which will mostly be about monkey bread and not scutoids, but y'know).

ooh now I'm hungry.

bye!

Scutoids

Best Shape of 2018! This video is VR180, so if you have a cardboard or other headset you can see the shapes in stereo, or looking around in magic window on a phone is pretty cool too. Scutoids are officially named for the first time in this paper: "Scutoids are a geometrical solution to three-dimensional packing of epithelia" https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-05376-1 Special thanks to Clara Grima for answering my scutoid questions, and to Laura Taalman and Tom Ruen who contributed to the creation of paper scutoid nets based off of 3D scutoid models by Laura Taalman, who invented the packable pair of identical scutoids (see https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3024272 ) , and John Peplinski, who created the space-filling cairo tile scutoid design (see https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3042446 ). More on that next time! Also thank you Caleb Wright, Albert Wenger, Pat Devlin, David Perryman, Jade Bilkey, Chris Pierik, Donald “Chronos” King, Andew Romaner, Jodi Vezzetti, Carol Ghiorsi Hart, Andrea Di Biagio, Charley Sheets, Yana Chernobilsky, David A Smith, Michael Tiemann, and all of my patrons on Patreon! Thanks! Also I just realized I left the egg in that scutoid and it's still there after however many days, oops...

I myself just invented an award for scutoids for bringing out so much Vi energy and intellectual delight again! Loved the Mr Ugh cameo, and the lights inside the scutoids were brilliant. Do we have a product? I am not smart enough to get the math, even when syrup simulated...is it OK if the bees were my favorite part?

vihart

The bees are probably my favourite part, so yes. I'll show how to make scutoid lamps in the next video!

The 🐝 look so buzzy in high speed!!!! The bees are my favorite. Also the wasps.

Copy-pasting my own YouTube comment: Delightful video. The 180 video format works really well in a Cardboard viewer. It solves the "where the hell do I look?" problem of VR pretty nicely. And the scooting scutoids are positively adorable. (Also, Hi Dogget!)

I watched it once, not noticing until the end that the view shifted as I tilted my phone. I rewound and saw the glasses icon... And then after crossing my eyes for thirty seconds, I could see the three - d effect. *Very* spiffy. I'll look for the icon in the future, but it would be helpful if there were a clearer sign at the beginning that these YouTube videos are not like other YouTube videos.
