This is my 12th annual Pi Day video.

Our Pi Day celebrations are perhaps the most consistent thing in my life, and part of me is always surprised how I manage to follow through year after year. A few years into this, when people started commenting on how they’re looking forward to Pi Day even if I haven’t posted recently, or consider the annual Pi Day video to be something of an institution, a reliable beacon in the turning of the spheres, I found it very humbling. I don’t know that I deserve to be entrusted with such faith. I certainly don’t always trust myself. Yet here I am, for the twelfth year in a row, so perhaps there’s something to it.

This has been a pretty intense year for me so far, but what year in the past 12 or 20 hasn't been? I am so ready for music and peace and being a mountain hermit composer.

If you missed my pre-pi post from a few days ago, it covered that I'm returning to composition full time, and also details about this year's Pi Day 2022 shiny things you can buy as well as patron-only discounts that'll last the next few days. I was hesitant to do 5 entire products at once when I've only sold a few things in years past, but y'all definitely showed up :D

I have a followup video or two for chromatic pi stuff that I'm still working on, so I'll keep this short and see you again soon. For now I need to take twenty naps.

Pi Day 2022: Chromatic Challenge

This is my 12th annual Pi Day video. How am I still here? How are you? I don't usually share "serious" music on the internet but I decided that March 2022 is a time to start. So I'm leaning hard into Pi Day and March 2022 this year, to not let another month slip by in the neverending now. This piece is dedicated to my patrons, who have supported me with such tremendous faith through many interesting times. You can buy the sheetmusic and recording for the Pi Day 2022 piano composition here: https://store.dftba.com/products/piano-sheet-music-digital-download-and-mp3 Exclusive shirt, cryptic edition, doubles as a puzzle: https://store.dftba.com/products/pi-day-2022-exclusive-shirt-cryptic-edition Exclusive shirt, shiny edition, is special and shiny: https://store.dftba.com/products/pi-day-2022-exclusive-shirt-shiny-edition Triangle Pins! https://store.dftba.com/collections/vi-hart/products/triangle-pin And finally, the challenge coin and 314 digits of pi sheetmusic, available in many clefs as well as guitar tabs: https://store.dftba.com/products/pi-chromatic-challenge-metal-coin-and-digital-download I will see you again soon. Hi Vi Hart -- happy PI day! None of your pi stuff is showing up for me in that link. Just the triangle pin, which is wonderful and pi related somehow I'm sure. I ordered the shirt by following the specific link in your previous post. Edit: Woohoo, it's all there now! :)

Michael Tiemann

Fantastic work, as always! Will be checking out the merch store...

vihart

Thanks, we had the pages unlisted for the pre-sale tests but we just fixed it :)

vihart

Thank you! I thought you'd be curious to know I fussed with my mic setup endlessly for this one. I ended up forgoing a more conventional micing, which kept sounding brighter than I wanted for this low-register piece no matter how I did it and with which mics, and sticking the SM81 pair a bit behind me and to my left. They're still going strong and I think of you whenever I use them!

Michael Tiemann

Now that's a mic drop (into the comments section) I can support. Bravo!!

Hexagon Truth

Amazing. But surely using the dozenal representation of π (3;1848...) would allow for more ergonomic mapping to the chromatic scale?

vihart

It absolutely would! And you're not alone in the suggestion, so maybe it would make a good topic for a future Pi Day :D

Hexagon Truth

Remember Dozenal Pi Day is still six days in the future! (And happily coincides with the spring equinox.)

David Peaker

I'm so glad you made an mp3 download, this now has pride of place in my music collection.

vihart

Thank you! I was hesitant since it's not exactly a professional recording and it's not perfect, so that's why I'm calling it a "Composer's recording" paired with the sheetmusic. But I'm glad it was worth doing.
