I hope you all enjoy my reaction to Promise and Christmas Love by Jimin! Let me know what other Jimin, or BTS songs, you want me to react to next!

Promise was a song that Jimin wrote to himself. I think of it in some ways as the successor to Lie. He struggled a lot in the past with being hard on himself and this song was the promise to himself be kinder and also as an extension to army to also be lighter and kinder to ourselves too though it didn't start out that way.. Actually, rather than me talking over Jimin, I recommend this vlive from 2019 where he talked about it. https://weverse.io/bts/live/4-104694128 He starts talking about it at 10m25s. (mind you for the first ten minutes he talks about sticking a piece of cabbage under your hat to keep cool!)

Oh, thanks for the reaction; I love both of these songs so much! I hear and respect your policy to focus on the music rather than the artist's life, but I feel compelled to point out just how much of BTS's music (as a group and individuals) is about their lives and experiences. I don't know, lately I've been growing frustrated with people (not you in particular, but reactors in general) who get so focused on "staying unspoiled" that they will make up their own meaning or get it from the comments or shorts and reels and tiktoks--any and everywhere but from the artist himself. It just saddens me since the guys have always made such an effort to tell their stories and share their lives through the music. All of which is to say, I think at least some context is a good thing, lol! On that note, I'd like to add some context on Christmas Love. It's a song that Jimin wrote and released in December 2020, the first winter/Christmas season of the pandemic. At that point, the world was in various stages of restrictions and lockdowns. BTS had released Map of the Soul 7 in February and then had to do most of the promotional performances with no audience; been forced to cancel or postpone their planned world tour; pivoted to finding ways to connect with and comfort ARMY, including new challenges like an album chronicling their thoughts (BE) and all English song meant to cheer people up (Dynamite); earned their first 3 Hot 100 #1 songs (Dynamite, Savage Love Remix, and then Life Goes On); and had their hopes to perform in front of a live audience dashed days before the concert (Map of the Soul ON:E, where Jimin was moved to tears on Day 1). In those final months of the year, we were gifted several projects: the album BE (Nov 20th), Jin's song Abyss (Dec 4th), Jimin's Christmas Love, and V's Snow Flower (both released on Christmas Eve, 12 hours apart). All of the solo songs were surprise drops. Throughout those early months of the pandemic, one of the things that really concerned Jimin was the effect that lockdowns were having on small children, those too young to really understand what was happening. I think this heavily influenced the song's subject matter: his own childhood memories of snow and the holidays. I know that you usually check out the doolset translation after reacting to a song, but just in case you haven't seen it, I'm going to add her translation of Jimin's note (the members usually leave a note or message when they drop a song on Soundcloud) about Christmas Love. ------------ [from doolset] Translation of Jimin’s note: Hello, ARMYs, this is Jimin. Have you received my Christmas present? I really wanted to have you hear this song and am very, very happy that I was able to do so. The reason that I’m visiting you like this is because I wanted to tell you a bit about the reason I decided to share this cheerful, upbeat song in this difficult time. As you can tell from the content of the song, I sang this song with the emotion when I first saw snow falling in large flakes, which is my favorite memory from childhood, as far as I can remember. As we grow up, I think we miss our childhood a lot. Whether or not it is due to the current situation, I felt like we remember our naive, innocent, pure selves and want to go back to the old days. Some sort of responsibility we get to have as we grow — I thought that responsibility might be what makes us be mature and also hide our emotions to some degree. But, I think we still have those emotions. So, for once, what won’t we express such emotions even if it’s childish? I thought it’d be good to make today the day. You all deserve to be always loved. So, rather than calling it cringey, although it might be a bit embarrassing to express, I hope we can make a situation that everyone can enjoy together. The song lacks a lot, compared to my grandiose intention, but my only desire with which I worked hard to make this song is that I wish you all are happy. I hope you can return to the past that you reminisce about for a moment after listening to this song. ------------ This is already suuuuper long, so I'll come back and add my thoughts about Promise to the insightful comment that SeaLights made before me. Again, thanks for your thoughtful and sincere reactions to our guys!
