Your penchant for picking favorite dudes, and character development makes me think you'd Like the Seven Deadly Sins anime. Author was bad at action, so he made a story where 1 minute is fighting and the other 22 minutes is character development. Action's bad and they ran out of money in season 4, but they grow so much as people.

From what I've noticed, the pacing of Overlord seasons follow a pattern more or less. First episode is lax, second episode builds a bit, third episode gets the excitement going, fourth episode is a climax in action that caries over a bit into episode five which rounds things out. Then it repeats for 6 through 10 with less of a lax start than the first half. Then 11, 12 and 13 are always grand and eventful episodes that were setup by the story telling of 1 through 5 and 6 through 10.
