The rest of the season is amazing

I really like how ep. 9 explains Jin'shi's personality through his childhood. What toys mean to him, and how he is when he's really attached to something. The way Maomao was wetting the wallpaper before peeling it reminds me so much of the art conservator (Baumgartner) restoring old art works with washi paper. Weirdly satisfying to watch. the layered wallpaper must be made of thicker material though, if it can completely obscure the painting beneath it.

As for the second episode, this is the first time I absorbed why the north side is in poorer shape compared to the rest of the area. Ofc the previous emperor needed more space for more young concubines (because as they aged, new ones had to come in to take their place, but the older ones couldn't leave), but after the old emperor passed, there was no need for the north side. The current emperor doesn't share in his sick proclivities, and though he had many concubines, they weren't nearly as much. Also, this ghost-story tradition seems more Japanese than Chinese.
