Pfft, I was about to say congrats, but the ring was on the wrong finger. What Maomao was wearing in the cave was essentially their traditional undergarments. That's why Jinshi reacted so strongly. It's been a few episodes, so I don't know if you've forgotten, but Jinshi did mention (when he and Maomao went to town in disguise), that he had meat skewers before "at camp". Maomao thought it odd that a eunuch would be among the soldiers like that, but it explains why Jinshi is so nonchalant about using a gun. I think Maomao's difficulties with "reading people" is more on a personal level (their connection with her). I don't think she realizes how fond people are of her or how fond she is of them because the way she engages with others seems to be more, er, "objective" than affectionate? Like, she reads as more sensible than emotional, even though we know that she has feelings and personal opinions just like everyone else. She gave the example of her older sisters leaving her to cry, but think about her mother who is indirect with her emotions, and her father who is also bad at reading others on a personal level (with a handful of exceptions). You could even consider her adoptive father, who always tells her to hold back from speaking things carelessly aloud. All this has helped shaped who Maomao is (both nurture and nature).
