Bee

Everyone is looking fabulous!!💫✨AND THEN THERES POOR ROCKY IN THE MIDDLE OF BEING MISERABLE😭😭

Grant111

These looks amazing! I love how contemplative and peaceful despite the injury Rocky looks. The flowers behind him are a nice touch, like their being blown in the wind. I like to think this was him leaving Ivys dorm, planning his next move. He’s been through hell, emotional turmoil and stress but he picks himself back up. Even with the pain and misery he’s experiencing

oliviaaaa

omg the comments pouring in 😭 serafine is SOO pretty 🩷

Grant111

I know! Even injured he’s perfect

POOR ROCKY 😭😭

Dan E. Won

Rocky looks like he's been in one too many scraps

Grant111

I fully agree! I think we get some of the most interesting, if depressing, Rocky content following his head injury. Really getting a look at the real rocky behind his mask

Uther von Valancius

True, but I also love how he kinda reinvents himself during the Doggerel poem (which also offers even more direct insight into Rocky's mind) and starts really leaning into his unique talents to be truly effective at bootlegging. So after getting pushed around, beaten up constantly and almost getting killed multiple times, I'd say it was actually a pretty triumphant moment (in its own morally skewed way) when he was finally fully succesful against Wes and Fish (even though the former potentially survived) . And he was fully in control the whole time, which I believe was conveyed beautifully through the heavy use of blue (Rocky's color) in those panels vs the grey/black of Wes creating an oppressive and pretty claustrophobic atmosphere around the car when he was introduced and was the dominating presence the previous night. Rocky's ambush really showcased that he really thrives in controlled chaos and there is indeed a "method to his madness." Those panels might actually be one of my absolute favorite parts of the comic released so far.

Grant111

I agree! Rocky did skillfully and effectively ambush Wes and fish. I use this as an example of his intelligence and usefulness to the Lackadaisy. He’s definitely not a stupid gremlin some see him as. Though I personally wouldn’t use the word triumphant. Unless he finds a way to open up to others so that he’s no longer treated so poorly by some of his coworkers he’s still trapped in that cycle of self hatred and buried depression. He’s certainly getting the hang of being a more effective criminal but at the cost of his mental health, morality and humanity. him continuing to bury his insecurities and act like everything Is fine is really holding him back. But I absolutely agree that he’s definitely locking in following his head injury no doubt due to his desperation to save the only home he has. I’m hopeful things for him improve and he opens up more finding the self confidence and being embraced by the speakeasy. Also I loved the part where Rocky leans over the ditch to say sorry, it felt like such a solemn moment for Rocky, like as much as enjoys some of the chaos of a fight he doesn’t seem to relish or receive pleasure from death

These are beautiful! I love Tracy’s art style so much 💙💙

With the chair, what she's wearing and the alligators(crocodiles?) I can't help but wonder if the serafine sketch is a doechii reference 🤔

Uther von Valancius

Oh yeah definitely, death seems to be at the very least an unfortunate necessity to Rocky. I mean the pig farmers almost managed to kill him after beating him up on multiple occasions and even then his response only involved destroying their property and equipment, when from a purely pragmatic standpoint their death could've also prevented the possibility of retaliatory attack on the speakeasy, which did end up happening. So maybe this chain of events in addition to him realizing that he's uniquely suited for the job of a criminal bootlegger as he is now (not that he couldn't have made different conscious choices that would've led him on different, arguably better paths, so it is at least party on him) also made him resolve to treat death and killing (notably still not by his own hand) as valid, albeit unfortunate options. Because it's both pretty much unavoidable in a life of crime, and the last time he shied away from it, he nearly lost everything if not for his cousin's impromptu murder spree. Plus he wasn't at all a stranger to moral ambiguity to begin with, so it was technically just a bigger hurdle he got over in his ongoing tragic descent into physical, emotional, mental as well as further moral deterioration. As for Rocky opening up as a solution, I don't think it would be that simple. First of all, if you're already treated poorly by your coworkers when you've curated and shown them pretty much only one half of yourself (the joviality is exaggerated and used as a mask, yes, but it's still very much part of his true self as well, as I see it), wouldn't you hesitate to show them your actually vulnerable side? If we look back at the pig farmer situation from his perspective, he was gone for the whole day in part because he had to walk back on foot from outside town, appeared visibly roughed up, actually told everyone what happened to him, and all he got in response was "We're so broke Mitzi's starting to actually lose it", "Oh, you screwed up the rendezvous" and "You also lost our last car". And off he went to get it back right away without a word. He then also asked for advice directly from Viktor, who although did give him the very solid suggestion (for just about any rational people not in the unique situation Rocky arguably positioned himself in) to just quit, also didn't have enough patience left for Rocky to hear out his plan he came up with by himself. Which, by the way, would've probably been pretty obvious to Viktor with his wealth of experience in the matter that it would backfire. My point is that it's not only Rocky that would need to open themselves up, as they're pretty much all clearly flawed, but not outright horrible people. It's just that everyone seems to be too caught up in their own deep seated issues and trauma, which often results in even more basic forms of genuine communication failing between them. For example, Mitzi also had her sense of morality warped by her life, especially during her time with Atlas, so she doesn't immediately register the severe implications of sending a 23 year old guy she initially hired strictly for the band on rumrunning assignments, which he is clearly completely unfit for. On the other hand, it's Rocky failing to communicate his true feelings when all he ever broadcasts towards her is that "everything is always fine and he's happy to do literally anything". Which she might take more or less at face value without taking a second look because her whole being is already too occupied with her own personal issues. Plus using Rocky is her own unfortunate necessity to help resolve those issues, so she might've already been subconsciously looking for any justification, anyway. So it might not necessarily be that she simply doesn't possess the emotional ability or empathy to care about him more, after all she did take him in out of pity and probably a genuine sense of altruism and charity, once. But to continue this thread of thought, why is Rocky always outwardly 200% positive, especially around Mitzi? Well, in big part because he's deathly afraid of being anything but the most useful, integral and indispensable model member of Lackadaisy. Why? Because Mitzi, the absolute authority figure of the establishment AKA his boss failed to communicate the clear terms and conditions of him getting to stay there in such a time of crisis and uncertainty (obviously he's also heavily invested personally in there still being a functioning speakeasy at all to stay at). It's already a sad state of affairs that he's thinking solely in terms of utility instead of anything else he could possibly offer to anyone there as a person, and that in his emotional state he would of course automatically assume the worst. But maybe if Mitzi gave him some actual reassurance that he wouldn't be kicked out immediately for being "bottom of the barrel/functional dead weight" the moment anyone else can do his rumrunning job better, I believe he wouldn't for example be hounding Wick so relentlessly. But, again, he never does bring up any issues himself, so then the whole thing goes back around and forth and so on : the Lackadaisy speakeasy is essentially the center of a huge web of personal misery and tragedies being interwoven (and expanding as the story progresses until eventually it all potentially comes down in a final, shared tragedy, but might actually result in something bittersweet by the end) where every member is just hopelessly, deeply human at the end of the day. That's my broad interpretation, at least.

Grant111

I agree with a lot of that! especially the part of everyone wrapped up in their own struggles. But Zib and Mitzi do care about Rocky. I’ve managed to get mostly non vague confirmation (which Tracy if you see this I can not emphasize how appreciative of that I was since I really struggle with reading between the lines and it was incredibly helpful abd very very much appreciated) from Tracy that both Zib and Mitzi do legitimately care for Rocky, but their personal struggles and Rocky’s insistence that he’s fine keep them from being more openly compassionate. Honestly of Rocky had a breakdown or took a moment to vent I think they’d be more open and caring even with their struggles. Because as you’ve said, their not great people but their not monsters either. But they see Rocky as someone unbothered and happy and willing to do what they want or need. But when it comes down to it they care, like Zib checking up on Rocky or pulling him away from danger or when Mitzi asks if he’s alright on the phone and clearly looking legitimately relieved to hear from him and other moments where she showed compassion. Which is why Rocky opening up is so important for progress in their relationships to evolve. As for crime, I agree with you here too! When it comes to combat like situations he’s capable of killing but isnt as remorseless as Mordecai or bloodthirsty. The pig farmers was a perfect example of him not wanting to kill despite having a solid reason to. I don’t think he’s at the point where he could outright execute a defenseless person but he’s definitely willing to kill. And I can’t really blame him for not being perfectly moral, he’s been screwed over by life since he was a kid and pushed to the sidelines of society. Plenty of people like that resort to crime because what other options are there when no one wants you? But yeah I’m definitely interested to see what happens after he delivers the booze to the Lackadaisy. That combined with Mitzi’s “borrowed” money and Wes and fish out of commission the Lackadaisy actually won for ounce. But yeah Rocky is such a well written, rounded and deeply tragic character. I love him!

I kinda love that Freckle is trying to grab something out of Rocky's circle

Consent of the Governed

Poor rocky…..his fate is still a mystery. But the fans want to know. What will become of him?

Trey Trent

Ivyyyy!!! I know it’s on pause but I really miss the Lackadaisy comics🥹🥲💛

Uther von Valancius

Pretty hard to say at this point, but I'm currently leaning towards no. But if that is the case, I also can't really see him dying before the finale, either.

SERAFINE.........................

Mica

YAY!!! Also Ivy as cute as always ❤️

Grant111

Personally I don’t see Tracy killing Him off, the comic definitely leans towards darker themes but it isn’t that bleak

Muddypaws

Board? Is that a commercially available item from any good art supplier?

Tracy Butler

Shikishi art boards are available from some art stores - it'd depend on the shop. You can order them online pretty easily too. They're sturdy, often used for illustrations, autographs, or both and can nicely accommodate things like ink wash.

Ivy!!!! She’s looks so cool!!
