Hey everyone!  Presently I'm working on the latest comic chapter (some of which I'll share with you all shortly) but for my future reference, I thought I ought to ask what sorts of tutorials you might be interested in seeing.  If you have an opinion, feel free to pick more than one. I'll just use this to gauge relative interest.  (Also, thanks in advance for your input!)

Doran

I'm kind of interested in a tutorial on composition. I think things like the rule of thirds are kind of overused and I'd love to see a tutorial on how to position everything so the image doesn't look awkward. Having said that, I am also pretty interested in the prospect of a light/shadow tutorial.

Garrett Simpson

A hair/fur tutorial would be exquisite imo!

Laura

I'm fasciated by how you can draw a human version (or even a dog version!) of your cat characters that still obviously look like the character, even without a nametag. Their faces and designs seem to match their personality and trope without looking cartoonishly exaggerated which is wicked cool. Also I like how you can distort the human version of the character's face via expression and angle and still have it clearly look like the character. A tutorial on breaking down the essential bits to get that character "essence" but keeping it believable would be awesome.

Classical Salamander

Visual storytelling and digital art creation techniques are awesome, and you're awesome at them, so I voted for those things. :)

Tracy Butler

That's an interesting idea, Laura. I'll give some thought to how I could approach explaining that. Thanks for your comment!

Tracy Butler

Ah, okay. That's something I could add to the list. Thanks!

Tracy Butler

Yeah - I hear a lot of talk about the rule of thirds and golden ratio, but I don't personally know any artists who practice that with an actual grid or applied measurements. I think it's more important to just develop a good sense for sound composition and communicative staging. Thanks, Doran! I will add this to my list. It's potentially something I could incorporate in the above-mentioned Visual Storytelling tutorial.

Tracy Butler

Ah, well, thanks Donald. That's kind of you! Both are hugely broad topics and I'm still learning, but I think I also might be able to share a little bit of useful information in those arenas.

El-collector

I'd be very interested to learn how you go about color/palettes and how you integrate it in either character designs or a particular scene (example; such as the scene where Rocky is driving the pie truck in the rain at night). I'm aware that's quite a subjective thing but I imagine there's some rules about that too :)

Maren Gordon

I was also going to say hair or fur. I see a lot of tutorials on hair and how to shape it, but I get confused as to the general layout of hair, ie. where to draw my lines to make the hair sit like hair, as opposed to just drawing lines willy-nilly.

Christopher Morton

I love sharing these with newer artist. They are a fantastic resource. I like to see them printed in a book. I would back that 100%

Liina Saarm

I would really-really like to read something about writing. Anything, whatever it is you feel like sharing your opinions about. Your story is super gripping and nuanced, but you rarely seem to talk about this aspect of the comic.

Garrett Simpson

Yeah, combining both and doing a tutorial how they mesh in anthro/other styles would be really fun!

Sawyer_Sweet

I'd love to see something about how you process getting your ideas into visual images accurately, if there's any tips you've picked up for making the mental translation process easier, and how you frame scenes. Sort of like mental cinematography.

Tracy Butler

Thanks very much - I'm glad you think so! I suppose I'm just a lot more insecure about my writing and less experienced in that area, so I'd feel a bit sheepish about presuming to try to teach anyone anything about it. I'll give some consideration to how I might talk about my approach, though, so that I could perhaps post a 'Thoughts On...' essay at some point. Thank you for commenting, Liina!

Tracy Butler

Okay. I wouldn't say my thoughts 'accurately' translate to paper, exactly...it always comes out different from what I initially envision. Still, that is definitely something I could talk about a bit in a guide/tutorial about Visual Storytelling. Thanks!

Astra Crompton

I struggle most with lighting/atmospheric lighting, and you do it so well. I'm excited for as much advice as you can share!

Spiralflute

Text and scrollwork? The evenness and intricacy of even the decoration around your drawings always amazes me...

Sarah

I want to learn old timey photo effects, as I was inspired to draw 1930s art thanks to Lackadaisy ^_^
