Comics have always been difficult and challenging, but this one...this one just about broke me.  I meant to have it up three days ago, but the power of coffee has a hard limit. I am sorry to have taken so long, but I do hope it's still worth a read. Here's an outside link, in case it's hard to view on Patreon. (I probably will break it into multiple pages for the web site, but wanted to share with patrons first.)---------------------------------------Also, happy New Year, everyone!  Welcome back to the 20s?I have some new and different stuff underway this year that I can't wait to tell you about...and I hope you'll be at least a fraction as excited about it as I am!

"I've *ever* given them anything"? Should be *never*?

SleepCircle

i'm sorry it was so hard on you to make this page, but you managed to make raw exposition an incredibly gripping read—as far as i'm concerned—so well done.

Leigh Legler

It might have been torture to make, but the end result is GORGEOUS. This whole thing is seriously one of the most captivating ones you've done. I can't stop looking over it.

emz

Holy shit this is incredible, from the animated expressions, to the shadows, textures, and color palette, I don't know where to begin. I understand a hefty comic being overwhelming and breaking one's soul, and it can often take away from the big picture: What's important is that you got it done, and got it done amazingly well! This literally made my day!! Your work is amazing. I especially love how well your panels flow together!

RebelSqurl

Man, this is an incredible set of pages. Terrific art as always, but the dialogue is absolutely gripping, as SleepCircle said. Lackadaisy remains one of the top webcomics, period!

Siphedious

Hapy 2020 Tracy, and damn, way to ring in the New Year!!! Nice to see perhaps the biggest mystery of the comic brought into focus. :) Sorry it was such a headache!

Doscher

SO much color, SO much story, SO much feeling. Not a drop of your blood was wasted here, though I do feel like a vampire dining on this visual repast.

Isabella Shapiro

Tracy, the wait was so worth it. This page made me giggle with excitement like a 5 year old. I am SO excited to see how this progresses. Mordecai has been my fav for almost four years now...I’m so happy to see his character grow. Thank you so much for this, I’m so so excited to see where we go this year!!

Conrad Wong

The plot thickens! Like oatmeal so strong the spoon breaks off whlie you're churning it.

Sidney Ruebensaal

I'm SCREAMING over the slight details added in about Atlas' death... every time I read a new update I develop a new theory, only to get me back to guessing an update later! It's riveting.

Brittany Coleman

A wonderful update as always! Well worth the wait. :) I had my suspicions Mordecai was still interested in Atlas's death...as he said he wants closure not only on his book report, but his previous work as well as they may be intertwined. I just hope he's ready to deal with whatever it may be that he finds out.

Winter Fox

As with everyone else, I’m sorry to hear this was so tough on you! I hope you know that we appreciate every bit though. You are an astoundingly talented person, not just with your ability to draw, but in how you compose a page. The characters have so much life to them, in the expressions and dialogue. The layout of the pages make the scene so vivid and gripping too. I’ve told many people you are the best at this. No one has ever wowed me as much as you. Thank you for sharing your talent. And I’m not patronizing, exaggerating, or sucking up when I say these things. So long as you are still able to find joy or satisfaction in your artistic toils, I hope you continue to build worlds like we’ve never seen before.

Crimson Alexander

gosh I love his tiny little ears and how contrasting their designs are xD

Black_Cat93

HNGHN I have OD’d on Lackadaisy and died, I wasn’t ready for such a concentrated dose of amazing - stand by for a more eloquent response at a later time from me in my afterlife (also: ‘I may have met your lawyer, by the way’ *snerk* Oh Mordecai)

Tracy Butler

Thank you - that's terribly kind of you. I didn't mean to sound whiny or self-pitying there. I do enjoy what I'm doing. I just wanted to express my apologies for the late update with an explanation as to why it sometimes takes so long (in this case, it was just an unusually difficult bit of story to tackle).

akrasia

Hollywood, are you listening? THIS is what the "Cats" movie should have been.

Isabella Shapiro

Ok, to add: This page alone made me double take my entire outlook on the comic, I have a re-read on the schedule. I remember forum fans theorizing about this yeeeeaaars ago, so to see it come to light makes me so, so happy!! That’s the great thing about watching the artistic process and story unfold; we grow with the characters and get time to guess what happens next. This page floored me and makes me super excited to see where this all goes. Not to mention how excited I am for your new material you hint at, Tracy ;^). Thanks you for sticking through with this amazing story throughout all the years, can’t wait to see its future!

Goodyear

This is absolutely stunning. Everything from the panel structure to the perspectives to the lighting and rendering of the characters. It might be one of the most interesting Lackadaisy scenes yet, and it's just a conversation. No action, no glitz and glamour. Just two dudes talking. And you've made it into a feast for the eyes. Worth all your hard work! I'm very excited to hear what other kinds of projects you have planned for the new year!

timmothy brown

It's always worth the wait regardless of the duration--thanx muchly

typo Adventure

No no, the movie "Cats" is supposed to be a trainwreck. Lackadaisy deserves its own title in Hollywood. Maybe once a plot is wrapped up, yes?

Moe H.

What does he mean, saying Mordecai isn’t a cake eater type?

Tracy Butler

The term has several meanings if you look it up now, but in the 1920s it was a fairly derogatory term for a lady's man - a dandy who spends most of his time socializing with and/or flirting with women.

Moe H.

Ohhhhh! Lol poor Mordecai, he really isn’t a lady’s man

Stephen Hutchison

utterly gorgeous. Also, man, Mordecai, what have you gotten yourself into? It just goes deeper and crazier.

Tasmanienerin

I like this cat I hope Mordecai doesn't hatchet him

akrasia

Mordecai's OCD might actually save the guy, he's proposing something that brings some symmetry back to the matter.

Jacob Diaz

LORE LORE LORE! I live for this stuff! That out of the way... I do hope you don't try to push yourself like this again. Yes, we want updates and all that, but health comes first.

calantian

Happy New Year, Tracy! The page is gorgeous, both artistically and in a literary sense. (The flower symbolism has never seen a better deployment.)

Your Humble Host

WHAT A TWIST! Is Mordecai a double agent trying to find out who murdered Atlas? That's the implication I'm getting.

Christopher Jones

I have to agree, this is truly an awesome page — your work is always gorgeous, but this is just stunning in all the right ways. Thanks!

Black_Cat93

Alright, I’ve been resuscitated. Here, have a small wall of text (split into several replies because FRICKEN SPAM FILTER, LIKE DAMN, I GET IT, MY COMMENT IS LONG). This was definitely well worth the wait - that the art is fantastic goes without saying, but I also think you succeeded marvellously well with the exposition! There were only a few phrases that I found a bit odd/confusing, but that might just be Gracie’s speech pattern. I especially like how you set the exposition up so that the readers find things out along with the characters - it didn’t feel out of place or clunky, and I kept reading with continued excitement throughout.

Black_Cat93

The dialogue in itself is gripping, but the lighting, composition, and characters’ expressions and body language enhance it further. I’m LOVING the plot and character development and these insights into the characters, as well as the nuggets of info on the mystery of Atlas’ death! VERY excited to see where this will go and what Mordecai will choose. I’m always more than satisfied to “just” see more of your art and to follow your characters and learn more about them, whether in the main comic or in side-work, but whenever more of the main mystery and plot is revealed, it’s always gripping and exciting!

Black_Cat93

Also: perfectionism can be a bastard (don’t I know it). Kick its ass and don’t let it get you down! And don’t be too hard on yourself! You’re definitely not alone in having this kind of struggle, and I certainly more than understand and respect that it can take you longer to get an update out, especially when it’s a tough and important section of the story. Your hard work is always very much appreciated and a joy to behold, and it’s always well worth the wait - but it sucks when your work can rake you over the coals so much. Don’t forget to take care of yourself! Lastly: much appreciation for how I keep learning new words when reading your comic (word of the day: yegg), and looking forward to the news you have to share!

Maggie Warren

Ha, Mordechai IS trying to figure out who shot Atlas, or at least who wanted him shot. First time I've ever felt sorry for him; he looks so incredibly frustrated!

Annabelle

Ooooooo getting some scoop on Atlas!....

Rainy The Day (Taylor)

This is honestly the most stunning page you've drawn to date. It's so detailed and beautiful

Moe H.

With some rather stunning information

e.a.rowe

Grombach's face in panel thirteen is just heartbreaking. In a scene full of exceptional dialog, this may be the most eloquent moment of all.

Erymenn

Yes. It just kill me inside
