Alien Person

I didn't even clock that the drone was also wearing some kind of armour or suit! What would it be used for?

Ryan

Poor Gord was just saying “s’up”

Ryan

Probably just curious to see a human and then gets slapped

You know, I've been thinking, and this panel reminded me... In UFO culture and science fiction, a lot of thought and imagination goes into vehicles and the appearance of the alien creatures. I suggest that, to a real alien which is millions, not thousands, of years ahead of us, vehicles and bodies are meaningless. The mind is the final frontier. A vehicles gets you... or your consciousness, from point A to point B assuming you cant just tele-operate an avatar. A body form is probably also meaningless, considering they could build a metal or meat body of any shape or ability. Like, how worried are you about rare or endangered species if you can just 3D print a tiger, or on a whim make it green, or on another whim make He-Man's talking Battle Cat actually real? Wouldn't zipping around in sporty disks get dull after a while, and instead you could play with your own consciousness, and know what its LIKE to be a tiger.. Not just have its body, but its instincts and mind and life experiences? I notice the aliens in Humanity Lost act more or less within human motivations, while the real aliens are whats left of humanity and its AI leader. Even then, a lust for power and minds and territory are the goal. I wonder what higher purposes a more advanced consciousness would seek. They 've got to be out there somewhere.

Yeah, things become so much clearer with the colour. That armour is basically an environment suit that helps the drones breathe in alien atmospheres. It has little RCS thrusters too to help them move about and that dish on top is there to help relay information pings to the core to aid with situational awareness.

Neat! Would be cool to have little infographics about more of the various aliens technology and stuff like that

Yeah this stuff is interesting to think about and it raises even more questions. They all centre around one thing: the nature of consciousness. We still do not fully comprehend the true nature of consciousness. Your ideas here rely on a lot of assumptions about its nature that we simply cannot know. For instance, what do we really mean by “consciousness”? Do we mean the cognisant waking state, the mind, or the spark within that “IS”? What does it even mean to “be”? Is it a soul? Is it a notch in the web of the interconnectedness of all things? Or is it just the ego, the personality that forms because of the evolutionary advantages of forming communal bonds as part of the “kin selection” strategy? If we mean our mind, then the question arises how much of what we call the mind is informed by our body. By that I mean sensory inputs and chemical and electrical interactions within the brain. Your experience of the world and in turn the self is without a doubt informed by your primary and secondary sexual characteristics. Genetic predispositions are a huge factor also. This means that the mind is not just a result of your body but your parents’ bodies and their parents. Your comment assumes that the mind is something apart from the body that merely pilots it like a vehicle, whereas it is in fact an intrinsic part of it. It is inextricably linked to it and to a very large degree it is a product of it. I say to a large degree because we cannot say for certain that what we call consciousness is completely contained in and originated within the brain. To place the ego of the mind, that is the part which is concerned with self, into another form like a metal disk or a tiger (supposing such a thing is possible) would be to fundamentally alter it. It raises the obvious question of whether it would even be you or what the utility would be of transporting this encoded, digitised “you” into a new vessel in the first place. What worth is transporting “you” when an algorithm which does not have the same flaws could be generated in situ? It begs the question as to what it even is that is being uploaded? Is it just an approximation of your most likely actions or a precise copy of the ego that formed in your real body? It certainly would not be the same you as is in your body right now. If you are just remotely controlling an avatar, I wonder how you would get around the delay in information that would occur over such great distances. It might simply be more useful to have someone actually present. I get the utility of piloting a drone in a hazardous environment with the operator nearby to minimise delay, but that is a separate thing to what you are talking about. Supposing a species got rid of their bodies entirely in favour of these replacements, it would be a form of self-extinction. Unless they valued memes over genes, then these replacements could propagate their ideas and culture (memetic information) without the forms (genetic information) that gave rise to them. An interesting idea. As for the aliens in Humanity Lost, they are guided by the same perennial survival pressures that we are: surviving until one can successfully pass on one’s genes and sometimes securing a domain in which this can occur. So they have what seem to be human motivations to us. It is also a thematic element of the series that this AI imperium is even more alien to us than literal alien lifeforms.

Interesting, how do you think the Gord's suits work? Do they have some sort of artificial muscles? I remember you saying that the Kolaxans would have to make it through Conglomerate territory in order to attack humanity, but what about the Gord? We don't know what their policy when it came to finding other races was and they must have found some looking at the size of their empire before the Singularity and the rise of the All-Mother. They kept around the Gherra but that was probably because the Gordian weed could awaken their psionic abilities and so the Gord kept them in hopes of using their psionic abilities or studying that in general. Not to mention the Gherra might have been an interstellar faction and would have taken up resources to destroy when the Gord needed to focus on the Conglomerate, so they gave them the Gordian weed and turned them into a puppet/vassal state. With that in mind, what would happen if there was a war between the Gord and Conglomerate and humanity was caught in the crossfire? Earth and its colonies likely would have been used as a base to attack the Gord even if humanity wasn't made loyal to the Conglomerate. Under these conditions the Gord likely would have destroyed humanity, Earth and its colonies. What do you think? Also you mentioned that you were in the planning stages for a comic set just before the Singularity that would follow characters at that time. I have been thinking about what the Final World War would have been like. With the UEs massive advantage in Artificial Intelligence it could employ it in a number of different ways. They could maybe use AIs to monitor sensors and use their extremely good pattern recognition and processing abilities to easily find minute indications of craft, soldiers or other assets that are using stealth technology. Unmodified and unassisted humans would have a much harder time finding those patterns and with the UE being good at AI they would always be one step ahead of the other nations as they frantically try to find ways to keep their stealth technology undetectable. With UE soldiers having BMIs Ais like this and others would be literally attached to their nervous systems, able to point out enemy assets using cameras or the soldiers own vision. Add to this easy communications and networking, downloading of needed information such as battlefield tactics or martial art styles and allowing augmentations to the nervous system and the body in general, and the UE's superior BMI technology and experience would make fighting them a nightmare. BMIs may also be made resistant to hacking through the use of fast-thinking AIs and jamming through using a variety of different communication mediums. Though the UEs enemies likely would have foresaw having to face BMI equipped soldiers and so may have poured money into developing better jamming and hacking systems and ways to disable BMIs in general, so they wouldn't be completely unprepared. One out-of-box thing the UE could do is use their extensive knowledge of neuroscience, psychology and the human mind and body in general from their BMI/cybernetic programs to their advantage. This could give them an edge in memetic warfare or even the brainwashing of individuals for use as agents in their enemies or predicting what enemies may do. Imagine UE brainwashed sleeper agents in every nation that had their brain structure altered and then had the hardware removed so they appear normal. When the UE wants to cause some chaos, they can feed the agents information in some way and have them attack and sabotage their enemies from within, as well as collecting intelligence. Such things would generate much paranoia, infighting and distrust within the UEs enemies, with people not trusting anyone who they suspect could be a sleeper agent. The neuroscientists outside the UE would then have to focus on finding ways to detect these sleeper agents and the UE would begin altering the methods they use when making new agents to prevent them from being found out. What do you think? Sorry this was very long and we have been talking a lot. I hope that isn't a problem.

The technology of how the Gord suits work is beyond me, but yes some form of artificial muscle would likely be used. Yes, if the All-mother wasn’t a thing, the Gord would be a very real threat that we would eventually face. You summarised the dynamic between the Gherra and the Gord perfectly. The Conglomerate were on track to assimilate Humanity anyway so they would absolutely use their colonies as a forward operational base against the Gord if they attacked. The prequel about the FWW won’t be a comic, it will be an illustrated novel with a lot of art work. I like how much faster progress can be made with the combination of prose and illustrations. I really like all of what you wrote there and I think you’re absolutely correct, the UE would have an absolute advantage. No that’s alright, it’s not a problem at all. However It would be easier for me to read and reply if you wrote each question as a single comment, saves all the scrolling and losing my place haha

So cool that the little Gord workers have environment suits too!
