Here it is, the grand reveal of the new ship!

Many an hour of research and conceptual work has gone into this design. Interestingly, the design of the ship in the background was originally going to be the new hero-ship. But the hero-ship needed to be something unique, something memorable, so I set about coming up with something that had never been done before.

I ended up inventing a completely new engine type. It is based on an engine concept called an aerospike engine, except it flips the principle on its head (literally). An aerospike Is effectively an engine bell that has been cut in half, the thrust of the engine is directed towards the remaining side of the bell. Aerospikes can come in unique shapes, like linear aerospikes and toroidal aerospikes (both are visible in the background), but what I have come up with for this new ship is a variable geometry Aerowedge, let me explain:

The actual engines outputting thrust are a row of rocket throats in the main body of the ship, but they are fired into an aerowedge which splits the exhaust and directs it in opposite ways. This is where the variable geometry comes in. The aerowedge is built into a large cylinder which can rotate slightly in either direction thanks to powerful motors at either tip. The aerowedge can twitch left and right to channel the exhaust solely in one direction or the other, when it’s in neutral position, the thrust goes out of both sides, halting movement. This enables instant and highly responsive reaction control. These Aerowedges are located all over the new ship, effectively turning the entire thing into one huge RCS (reaction control system).

These engines are powered by an oversized FLUX drive. The FLUX drive has a small wormhole throat sustained in its centre by some very advanced housing technology, this housing unit simulates FLUX conditions locally and allows some FLUX particles to bleed through, it directs these bled particles into chambers which obey the relativistic physics of the surrounding REAL (our universe). As discussed before, due to unknown reasons, if ever a FLUX particle ends up in the REAL and falls under the governance of its physical laws, it begins to divide exponentially, boiling off in a process of annihilation. This annihilative energy is harnessed by the variable geometry aerowedge to output constant thrust.

In combat situations the ship blazes bright with wings of flame like an angel of death, gerking here and there in a moments notice to avoid incoming attacks. The radiator panels which cover it head to toe glowing hot with waste heat. I haven’t even mentioned its armaments, but we’ll see plenty of those later this volume.

Because of this ability to move erratically, the interior of the ship is well padded to protect the crew. Robotic Straps can shoot out from between the cushions to grab loose crew members and secure them to the nearest wall if need be. There are also dedicated smart-gel flight chairs built specifically for protecting the crew in full-combat flight mode. These cushions are usually white, but some are coloured bright colours to indicate that they conceal appliances or instruments, all rooms are free from dangerous protruding obstructions this way. So as you can see, the entire design language of the ship is based around these unique thrusters.

I also just wanted to say really appreciate everyone’s patience in waiting for this post, thanks for giving me the time to nail down the design, I’m really happy with how it turned and and I look forward to demonstrating the ships capabilities in the coming pages. I’d like to thank you for your support too, you enable me to dedicate the time it takes to create pages like this in the first place, you’re the best!

Yes! Another cross section! Looks incredible Callum, can’t wait to see it in full colored glory! I think you do a really good job with blending the look of what could be a normal “horizontal” sci-fi ship with the verticality of hard sci-fi ships. I’m glad you didn’t go with any hand-wavey anti-grav.

Very cool looking ship. With quite a diverse crew as far as I could tell. But I have a question. Who built it? Was it built at the specific request of Baron Janudua or is it a typical vessel seen in Kolaxan fleets?

Thanks and Indeed! The story behind this ship is that it is a prototype that never went into full production because of costs. It was produced by contractors of the Galactic Union as a symbolic demonstration of a ship which could an accommodate all species and fight against the Imperium. God knows how it came into the Barons collection, but it is a kingly gift!

Thanks Oz! Means a lot mate 🙏🏻 Aye, I’ll be back with the colours in no time now that the hard part is out of the way Yeah I’m always thinking about stuff like that when I watch science fiction shows and films, it’s a curse! Haha I’m really glad you like it, there is some hand waving with the fuel source, but I figured it’s okay so long as there’s an in-setting explanation

Amazing work! It was more than worth the wait! I really love cross-sections. Is there a reason why we haven't seen any non-Imperium vessel or technology that makes use of ELAN particles instead of FLUX particles? Since the All-Mother uses ELAN particles and elected to use them over the probably easier to access FLUX particles I imagine the ELAN can supply much more energy than the FLUX. So why doesn't Deicide use ELAN particles for his ships as he was in control of a womb-world designed to produce Imperium ships? Have aliens tried to recreate Imperium technology without biology? Have they even tried to take pieces of biotech from destroyed Imperium ships and use them? I'm just imagining a ship that is normal and non-biological except for a living ELAN canister and engine that has been attached to it. Though, this may not be possible as Imperium technology may be designed to melt into a bunch of pathogens, spy on you or otherwise make itself a problem when captured and needs a special treatment to make sure it doesn't do that. One thing I'm curious about is how citizens outside of the frontlines view the Imperium, especially species like the Kolaxans. The Kolaxans are used to war and defeating other species and enslaving them, so will they understand what's happening or will they believe it to just be another war like all the others rather than the existential threat to their whole species that it is. Also, the Imperium can just appear above a planet with no warning because they travel through the FLUX. I think one would assume beings facing a threat like that would realize the magnitude of it but societal structures, culture and biases often get in the way of that. I imagine those who try to warn others about the Imperium and what it can do are laughed at or thought of as cowards or alarmists. I guess I'm also interested in aliens' first encounters and reactions to the Imperium if they didn't know about them before, I've always liked scenarios like that in fiction. I hope you have a good day!

Defo a cool design

Thank you for the kind words 🙌🏻 The galaxy is a big place. It’s possible that the things you’ve suggested could have already happened and be out there. Flux drives are just a tried-and-tested technology, and the rollout is more widespread. Most likely, yes. There are no doubt black-budget research departments in each of the great powers experimenting with all sorts of things like that. There is always that risk. You might incorporate it into your military, only for it to be subverted and used against you. I think it would be useful for the Empire to maintain order if their population did think that. They most likely play things down to keep matters under control at home, but the regime is very aware of the existential nature of the situation. Yes, exactly — good point. Me too; that stuff is super interesting. Thanks, and may you have a lovely weekend!
