How I Got Started Working on Suki Suki Daisuki

스키스키 다이스키를 만들게 된 계기

About a year back, I was a simple illustrator, who used to post pastel-colored artworks with a static atmosphere. I knew close to nothing about making animations and video editing, and I was just moving along day-to-day, making my ends meet doing freelance artworks.

바야흐로 1년 전, 저는 애니메이션 영상 작업에는 전혀 문외한이던 일러스트레이터였습니다. 지금과는 다르게 파스텔한 색감과 정적인 분위기를 가진 그림을 sns에 올리며, 가끔씩 오는 외주를 받아 생계를 유지하였습니다.

I sure loved drawing pictures of cute lively girls, but it has been not too long until it started feeling a bit dull to me.

귀여운 소녀들을 그리는 것은 즐거웠습니다. 하지만, 늘 같은 분위기의 그림을 그리는 것이 슬슬 지겨웠습니다.

Pink shades, cute props, smiling girls..., the same old clichés. There I was thinking, I got along long enough without puhsing myself to try anything new.

분홍빛 색감, 아기자기한 소품, 미소짓고 있는 소녀들.. 같은 키워드들로 새로운 시도 없이 오래버텼다는 생각도 들었죠.

So this time, I was determined to try something new which I have been thinking over for a while

그래서 이번에는 여태껏 해보고 싶었던 것을 시도해보자 마음먹었습니다.

Try making a video in over 1 minute length (1분 이상 길이의 영상 작업)

Push myself to use video editing softwares, like Premier Pro－I used to only use Clip Studio for my previous animation works. (영상 편집 소프트웨어, 프리미어 사용 (기존에 저는 모든 영상 작업 또한 CLIP STUDIO만을 사용해왔었습니다.)

Challenge myself to a genre I have never tried before (평소에 하지 않던 장르 도전)

With these three new-to-me objectives in mind, I have set on planning the project of making Suki Suki Daisuki.

그동안 제가 하지 못한 세 개의 도전을 차근차근 해치워보자는 마음으로 스키스키 다이스키를 기획하였습니다.

Now, I am a type who needs to hear a song to get my inspirations flowing. Naturally, the first thing on the list was that I needed to find the right song. Looking back now, I was not particularly set on having psychological horror as the main theme for the video, as the first candidate for the music was Aoi Sangoshou by Seiko Matsuda. It probably was the reason why I made the protagonist's hairstyle in Suki Suki Daisuki similar to Seiko Matsuda's. In the end though, my plan with the song has been put on hold as I could not draw enough inspirations from it.

저는 노래를 들어야 구성이 떠오르는 타입이었습니다. 고로, 제일 먼저 해야할 일은 바로 노래 찾기였죠. 당시를 돌이켜 보았을 때 호러 장르를 메인으로 할 생각은 없었던 거 같아요. 왜냐하면 맨 처음으로 생각한 노래가 바로 마츠다 세이코의 <푸른 산호초>라는 노래였거든요. 스키스키 소녀의 헤어스타일이 마츠다 세이코를 닮은 이유도 이 때문일 것입니다. 결국 이미지가 잘 떠오르지 않아, 보류되었습니다.

I needed a song that is bold, and unconventional enough to break up my mannerism

조금 더 파격적이고 기존 작업 방식의 틀을 깰 수 있을만한 엽기적인 노래가 필요했습니다.

As I was going through endless amount of tracks to find that one right song, a lightbulb finally went on in my mind. There was this song I heard in my school years through my friend's suggestion.

그렇게 저는 끊임없이 새로운 영상을 만들기 위해, 여러 노래를 들어보았습니다. 오랜 고민 도중, 과거 학창 시절 친구에게 추천 받았던 노래가 떠올랐습니다.

'This song, it's kinda vintage but, the part where the vocalist suddenly changes her singing style gives me goosebumps!'

‘이 노래, 진짜 옛날 노래인데 중간에 갑자기 노래가 돌변해서 소름돋더라!’

As I was listening to the song this time once again, all these drifting ideas that I have pondered settled down at once.

노래를 듣는 순간, 그동안의 고민이 순식간에 사라졌습니다.

Bizarre melody line, sudden shift in singing style that is hard to imagine coming from a same vocalist, then there is this peculiar and uncanny music video. All these points were just perfect to get my inspirations flowing!

괴기한 멜로디 라인, 한 사람이 부르는 것이라곤 믿기지 않는 창법, 정신이 혼미해지는 뮤비까지. 이 모든 것은 저의 영감을 깨우기 매우 충분했습니다!

In our video Suki Suki Daisuki, you can tap into a story of a girl in a cruel and twisted love relationship with her crush

스키스키 다이스키는 한 소녀의 괴기하고 잔혹한 짝사랑을 담은 이야기입니다.

Our protagonist girl goes through all kinds of contorted acts in order to get the heart of her crush. The original music video of the song Suki Suki Daisuki has been a great hint for me when I was conceptualizing the scenes in our video.

스키스키의 주인공은 짝사랑 상대를 차지하기 위해 각종 기행을 펼치는데요.장면을 구상할 때,  SUKI SUKI DAISUKI의 뮤비는 저에게 좋은 영감이 되었습니다.

While there are many songs out there that goes into the theme of twisted love, I think there is not much songs that shines the light upon the innocent side of it like in Suki Suki Daisuki, if any. 

잔혹한 사랑을 담은 노래는 많지만, SUKI SUKI DAISUKI처럼 ‘순수하고 잔혹한 사랑’을 담은 노래는  SUKI SUKI DAISUKI가 유일하다고 생각했습니다.

In the song's original music video, its protagonist obsesses and begs for her love's attention, almost child-like.

더불어, 뮤비에서는 어린 아이처럼 사랑을 구걸하고, 집착을 일삼죠.

Built upon these keywords is our take of the animated music video, likewise titled Suki Suki Daisuki.

이 키워드를 바탕으로 지금의 스키스키 다이스키가 탄생하게 되었습니다.

Don't you think our protagonist's smile look so innocent?

I am proud to say that I was able to embed quite successfully in our video the subject that there is a thin line between innocent love and obsession.

주인공의 미소가 꽤 순수해 보이지 않나요?

순애와 집착은 한 끝 차이라는 것이

스키스키 다이스키를 통해 잘 드러난 거 같아 기쁩니다.

Conclusion : 마무리

Thankfully, through your interest and support, our animated music video Suki Suki Daisuki made it possible that me and my team continue on this path!

It has further pushed me into new challenges, and helped me immensly to overcome my mannerism.
