Thanks for another great video. Really appreciate you taking the time to do these. They are fascinating.

William Hockstad

Awesome Job. I absolutely love your briefs. Former Army airdale.

Andrew MacDougall

please explain "naval civil code" and the significance of "magadan"

Eric

On Project 971m, the Akula III, the big bulbous housing for the towed sonar array is missing from the top of the rudder. Do they house the towed array somewhere else on these?

Aaron Amick

Yes, it's on it's side in the structure between the hull and the inner hull.

Andrew MacDougall

41:24 there appears to be six additional tubes above the circular torpedo tubes. are these for decoys?

FTC

I think it’s worth clarifying that you often use the term “west coast” to describe the Pacific coast, which is on Russia’s EAST coast.

Andrew MacDougall

I get a sense from this that the borei is an attempt to make a SSBN out of the established and proven sierra/akula SSN platform.

FTC

yeah they’re decoy tubes

Eric

jive, will you be releasing an audio version of this? And any older ones that you didn't already release?

Aaron Amick

yes, audio version will be out this week.

NZ Mariner

Thanks for another fantasic brief!

Mark McGrath

The wife left him probably was why they had a suicide.

Runolfr Ulfsson

I remember these being included in a "688 Attack Sub" computer game prior to 1990. I wonder what the programmers knew.

Runolfr Ulfsson

(43:40) So be vigilant! Hell, I wouldn't want something like this tracking me, especially if I didn't know it.

SteiniGud

Great video as always, but I noticed while talking about the K-331 Narwhal you completely skipped the bullet point about a US Vice Admiral visiting the ship, was that on purpose ?

Mark Keogh

Jeesh, if the Russians actually paid for all the reactors they need to safely dispose of they'd be broke...

Aaron Amick

No. I try not read the slides verbatim, but I missed that point entirely.

Seahour

You pumped this one out quick! :D Thanks for another great brief! Just to clarify, does the US Navy classify them as the Akula, Improved Akula, Akula II, Akula III? Or is that just how the naming scheme was for the video/how they are refered to by Navy personnel?

Aaron Amick

When I was in the Navy, we called them Akula, Akula II, Improved Akula. Akula III was not used or official. I think Akula III is more common now. It was very confusing as the Akula II and Improved Akula mean the same thing to me. lol.

R Lee Hawkins

Great brief, but you seem to have an error on where the Akulas are based. If you look at the google sat image of Krasheninnikov Bay, you'll see that there is nothing there. Nada. The image you have above is actually an image of the Pacific Fleet submarine base at Rybachiy / Vilkovo.

Aaron Amick

In this case, I have to go with my sources. They repeatedly claim to have been based out of Krasheninnikov Bay.

R Lee Hawkins

The confusion seems to stem from a typo. The bay where the subs are based is "Krasheninnikova" . The bay you spell out in your brief is "Krasheninnikov" (with no trailing a), which is located near what appears to be a mostly uninhabited island to the south.

Seahour

Thanks! I wondered about that, to me it definitely seems like Improved Akula and Akula II would mean the same thing as well. :)

Whitzwolf

Another incredible lecture, thanks Jive!

Pretty Scary Video for the poor Russian Submariners... they use old parts into new submarines. Holy Cow. I hope we are still not funding their cleanup. Great Video by the way.

TheFreaker86 .

What is this with all the submarines catching fire during overhaul? The dock workers must be incompetent, drunk and oblivious to obvious fire hazards

TheFreaker86 .

@Jive Turkey have you ever encountered a rogue wave underway? If so: With your own eyes or on sonar?

Thrall

Great video, but one point of criticism: why do you blame capitalism for the corruption if it only seems to cripple former soviet countries ?

Aaron Amick

I would have to go back and listen to that part. can you give me a time mark in the video of what you are talking about?

Thrall

The context starts around 25:00, concerning the recurring pattern of starting repairs/maintenance and never finishing it following the corporatization of the shipyards/maintenance facilities. Don't take it too seriously though. I have been watching a few economics videos in the last year, so I might just be a bit sensitive to generalizations that I feel are unjustified.

Scott W McWhorter

Jan 2012: Automatic fire suppression activated. Feb 2012: Senior Engineer hangs himself. Is it possible that the 2 events are related?

Y E

It's not capitalism, its the capitalists. The people who came to power in the 90s were not Russians. They were a clique of Western-aligned oligarchs, who dedicated their life to stealing property that wasn't created for them, it was created by the people of the Soviet Union by the people. Luckily, Putin came to power and stopped destruction of my country.

Thrall

And why were they not russians ? Because they acted against public interest and were therefore some "enemies of the state/people" ? I highly doubt that if you put any man, be it russian, indian or swede in these positions they would act much different. The Soviet communist system was at least rigged politically and economically and not build to last. Can you blame that on these people ? In my huble oppinion you can blame it on the people who build and perpetuated it, but probably not on those who rolled along with it and made a profit, because, who wouldn't want to make a profit and improve the situation of himself and his family ? Lastly, what Putin did and does is highly political and possibly even ideological, so I wouldn't want to discuss that here. This is supposed to be about Mr JiveTurkey and submarines after all ! :)

Y E

"they were not Russians" - yeah I meant that metaphorically. You've originally posed a question and I gave my opinion, I am not interested in discussion, as you've said, it's not the right place to do it.

Mario Sergio Porto

Sorry I got confused. Did you say that Amur Shipyard built Akulas for the west or for the east coast of Russia? Because it seems to me that they constructed for the east coast.

Mtume

Is there any declassified information on the Akula 1's sound dB level?
