Hey Jive, you really good me by surprise with that one. Great idea and a very interesting one too. I am very curious about the lithium ion batteries, aren't they an even bigger risk in the case of flooding?

R Lee Hawkins

It's pronounced "Ya-Kuh-Ska" not "Yoko-Suka". My dad was on the St. Paul in the late 50's. They spent a lot of time there :)

William Hockstad

Merry Christmas, Jive, thanks for the entertainment..

Aaron Amick

Yes. Japan says they found a way to make them safer.

Alexander

I hope so for them! I remember as an as an instructor did pocket in mobile phone battery with his knife to start a fire back in SEER training.

Andrew MacDougall

doesn't japan's pacificism require them to not sell arms abroad? I could be mistaken

Seahour

Thanks! Very nice info, and engaging! Question, on the last two boats, do the lithium-ion batteries replace the led aced batteries too? Or just the Stirling engines?

Jeffrey L. Mitzel

Do the Lithium Ions off gas hydrogen like a lead acid battery does?

Andrew MacDougall

my understanding is that they replace the stirling/AIP system which itself replaced the lead-acid batteries on older diesel electric boats.

Andrew MacDougall

nothing in a lion battery has hydrogen in it, so no. they're main danger is over-heating if charged or discharged too rapidly, a problem well known to tesla.

Cool Brief - You mention X rudders aid in low speed surface maneuver. It would make more sense that it aids in high-speed underwater more like original Albacore. It also should allow to go into shallower water. Unless they are using all moving rudders like a fighter plane, then yes, that would be interesting.

I wish Canada's next submarine would be something like these, give it some limited under the ice capability as we refuse to go nuclear on our submarines for some reason, despite it's need in our Arctic ocean. At least we have the Americans to help us in that regard.

Seahour

Roger, thanks for sharing.

For example: Lithium type batteries such as lithium polymer (li-pos) batteries have been used in Radio Controlled Hobbies for a long time. Better power for their weight, BUT get hot while discharging and charging. And no matter what you do, always a risk of fire during both of those tasks. Hobbiest use fire proof bags and pouches too hold batteries while charging and never leave them unattended. People have lost their whole homes to charging li-pos, I've been in the hobby for over 15 yrs, heard too many stories of that.

Whitzwolf

Oh man you butchered all those Japanese name and places but info was top notch! Thanks again Jive :)

Aaron Amick

It replaces the Sterling AIP specifically which implies the Lead Acid batteries as well. However, no where in the literature is it ever actually stated. But, it just makes sense that they would only have Lithium-Ion batteries.

Aaron Amick

I think it makes it much more maneuverable under water, but I haven't found any official source confirming that. It's just my opinion.

El Portal24

X rudders are very old... going back past Albacore. And they do help maneuverability since you can put bigger planes, total square footage, because they are not hitting bottom or poking out the top.

This is late but i just wanted to point out that MALABAR is naval exercise between three permanent members USA, Japan and India.
