The Wells Report

Jive....That was a very nice piece. Somewhere, there are Soviet/Russian Submariners thanking you for your obvious respect for them and the machines they served inside. Well done!!

Ben Baselet

Sorry but that reactor whiteboard makes zero sense to me. I don't believe for a second that anyone in the world would run raw sea water to his steam generator and turbines. That needs to be the closed cycle secondary loop for the SG->turbine->condenser->pumps loop like any PWR. The sea water must be cooling the condenser of the secondary loop. The closest you could get to this would be if they used a BWR reactor, moving the SG inside the reactor vessel and running the turbines directly off that and then the sea water cooling the main condenser unit after the turbines. I know this is a gross simplification but still.

Jive: Is there a way to clean up/systematize the tags for each video? When I go to your main patreon page, above the entries for each patreon message there is a way to browse by tags. Having tags for the name/type number/country for each subbrief along with a "brief" tag might help people find stuff. The search feature located close by seems useless.

Whitzwolf

I think this was before he talked about PWRs and the Nautilus

Aaron Amick

Good critical thinking. the whiteboard drawing is not 100% accurate. I intentionally left out a key part because it's submarine nuclear power and it applies to United States submarines as well. These Sub Briefs are for a general audience and my reactor descriptions will not hold up to engineering scrutiny.

Aaron Amick

I have cleaned up the tags and search engine works perfectly comrade.

Ben Baselet

Thanks for the reply. I understand it's a touchy subject but since commercial land-based power plants (seem to, I'm not a military reactor specialist) work principally the same way one might just point at (google a PWR) if you can't talk about specifics. I'd hazard a guess lots of the tech is very similar since that's what everyone has been doing since the 1940s and 50s, except for some obscure stuff which does not seem to be very practical even this day (at least not on the commercial sector). It's a bit strange that you can watch whole lectures how to build various types of actual nuclear bombs on youtube but a bit of heated steam&water cycle is supposed to be so darn seeecret :-)

Looks like the Typhoon has 4 people tanks (two long ones, the torp room and command. Are there any other submarine designs that have multiple people tanks?

Nicholas Gross

Using sea water in the secondary loop, what steps are taken to prevent corrosion?

Aaron Amick

A lot of submarines have water tight compartments, but nothing on the scale of the Typhoon.

Hub

Great video, thank you

Stanislav Shchebetov

Aaron, you mentioned that they were very quite on low speed as they could turn off the cooling recirculating pumps. But what about the medium/high speeds?

I decided to come back around and listen again. Love the brief. A thought came back that has bothered me for long time. Each of your briefs, the Soviet subs had improvements for noise specific to what USA advanced (for its time) listening systems could hear (SOSUS, subs, air, and surface systems). This brief shows again targeted improvements that Soviet commies had garnered from USA leaks. Traitor John Walker leaks for one. For many years, he dropped out targeted USA IP that showed major flaws (mostly unknown to Soviets) total and complete weaknesses in their designs. Your prop resonance comment, plus others related to the fact we could hear this amazing beast for a long distance. Depending on thermocline, hundreds or thousand miles away. Every time our advancements found something new to track, Walker family would wait a bit, then send all our data to Soviets. For a few shekels he betrayed all of us. The IP lost in dollars is estimated to be more than $264,000,000,000 for USA (and our allies). Actually I think this number is low estimate over the decades. This has ramped up to this day. We have various “Walkers” who are Chinese of origin, or European, who are betraying us daily. Unknown. Plus the intel being passed along on how to hack our moronic Battle Star Galactica series like web of interconnected systems. Once hacked, a treasure trove of trillions saved for China and Russia (plus the slimy French). Anyway, PLEASE focus at least on Cold War loss of USA IP and how it affected everyone. Including your job. Also, PLEASE focus briefs on our integrated ASW systems that worked so well for decades. You KNOW how good things were. Especially when humming along. And how all these systems were betrayed. One last thing. I would like you to revise your briefs on water conditions, plus other various tactics used to defeat our adversaries. Tom Clancy old stuff has you beat. :) There is so much more that can be discussed without you getting in trouble. Folks need to know the real story what went on, and what is going on today. Helps us all as taxpayers understand why spending what we do (and should spend more) is needed. D

Sorry for typos. Did this on iPad. Hit wrong button. Looks like no way to edit.

Chickennlettuce .

Hey jive, what other russian submarines other than the typhoon class have that natural circulation reactor?

Cameron Williams

Any accidents/incidents/anecdotes involving the Typhoon over the years?

Capt. Wrecked

Jive, with the general lack of information free flowing out of the USSR during development, was the TK designation possibly an attempt to fool NATO into thinking they were actually cruisers and not boomers during construction?

Austin Burnette

Where can I find the last picture in the video of TK-208

Aaron Amick

search 'photo' or 'photos' in patreon and you will get all the photos I post here. They will be sorted by submarine type.

StygianFury

Jive, does the NC reactor and the secondary loop that purges to open ocean leave a significant heat bloom? I just wondered if venting hot water like that would give them away for IR tracking even though they trade it off in silent running.

Aaron Amick

Yes, heat bloom is a method of detection.

Apollo

First off, want to say I love this brief. Second, I love it so much ive been inspired to recreate the TK-20 Severstal in the game Barotrauma, which nearly pushes the limits of the game's intentions. Since the game is 2D, I can only recreate the cutaway of one (starboard) pressure hull and the gunnery/sail hulls, but I'm stuck on how to fill out her decks and bulkheads. is there any information out there of the layout or general designation of the rooms? perhaps something Vepr has?

Duane Snodgrass

Check out Google Maps over Severodvinsk. They got a shot of what looks like two of them tied up alongside each other with the missile hatches open. There's another close by tied alongside some kind of surface ship.

Matej Lomjanski

at 28:48 there is a warning sing that says: "ZONA STROGOGO REŽIMA" that is "Zone with enhanced security"

Blair Shaw (Subhunter)

There’s been a few TK12 suffered a missile fire which damaged the tube and hatches One snagged the towed array of HMS Splendid as well there’s a couple of others but I can’t recall all of them off top of my head at the moment

Blair Shaw (Subhunter)

If anyone wants to see a documentary on the typhoon they can here it’s called mission invisible it was shot in the early 2000s when TK20 Severstal was still active the commander Alexander Bogachev passed away February 2015 here’s the link https://youtu.be/8SmCnyB6ODc

Mtume

Tk-208 should be lifted out of the water and preserved as the newest wonders of the world.
