Wow that was a huge brief, thank you Aaron for your time and hard work, you caught me in the middle of an old Cold Waters stream, this is better though 😎 It seems they really went a roundabout way of getting a modern sub, shame about that slight of hand at the end with the use of Australian Industry

Aaron

As one of the people you released the early slides to, and as an Australian who thought they had a pretty good idea about the situation I quickly realised you uncovered so much about the project that I wasn’t entirely aware of. Your research and fact checking skills are amazing! I have appreciated every sub brief I have seen, but now I am just mind blown about the details you manage to dig up. If other Patreons see an upcoming sub they feel they can have input to I highly encourage them to contact Aaron to assist.

Talk about botching the deal. France will probably replace or start to replace barracuda by the time last boat is delivered/commissioned in 2054 as envisaged. Buying the barracuda SSN off the shelf would have been easier probably and cheaper as development cost is already paid for by France and upgrading the infrastructure could have also be done in much less time as Australia already has a very good civilian nuclear industry. US could have also helped with the same probably.

Hierachy 1871

so basically, with that money my country could have started a nuclear industry, have more capable subs, fixed our expensive energy generation issue, created jobs and would have gotten the subs earlier, great.....

I'd like to volunteer for the error-correction/editing pre-screening as my aspy tendencies are good at error spotting.

Sounds like the idea of buying second-hand 688's.

@Aaron Amick I spat my coffee laughing when you pronounced Sean's name. HAHAHA my friend it's pronounced Cos-tell-o :D forgive me, Aaron I'm still giggling XD

Aaron Amick

I took inspiration from the famous comedy duo Abbott and Costello. I thought it was fitting for this topic.

I will send out a Patreon message when the next Sub Brief is ready for review.

@Aaron Amick Who's on first? <- boy am I showing my age there 😁

Again Aaron, thank you for the honour of helping you with your presentation. It was such a joy to help do research for you and contribute something special that we patrons look forward to here. Your sub briefs are very well presented and have given us a wealth of knowledge. Okay enough simping lol, I'll let you get back to the next briefing skipper ;)

1:16:34 FOIA in China. 🤣 Gotta laugh at that one. Next you're going to tell me about FOIA'ing the Kremlin.

Jayson Rothman

This brief was brilliant! Incredibly intriguing!

First chance I've had to watch this. Hard to fit a 90min vid into my schedule but worth it. Love how intense you get during the discussion of shenanigans.

Agreed, the world needs more people who actually care and know about the effects of problems and such, not just clueless talking heads on tv or in the government.

sachin sathe

Not quite. What Australia could have done is build a barracuda but one with Australian reactor. This would have leveraged the Australian expertise in nuclear arena. Also, the Americans could have helped with nasalization of the reactor so to speak. Buying second hand 688's would probably be cheaper but not help the Australian industry which was one of the major program goals. If goal was to get off the shelf design then modified S80A (Spanish take on the scorpene) would have been better as it is already adapted to fire American weapons such as tomahawks and torpedoes I believe. If that is to be believed then all the headache and cost overhead of a brand new fire/combat control system could have been avoided.

PG_tetras

This is really excellent brief, very informative of the internals of lobing/ contracting /negotiations /persons for principal weapon systems.

Seahour

Wow, crazy stuff. Thanks for the awesome brief! The collaboration to make this one is great! Thank you to all the sources.

The FOI request should be viraled in the public lol

How do the facilities needed to construct a submarine fleet compare with the facilities for maintenance? Would a shipyard that can build 12 submarines in 30 years be oversized to maintain 12 submarines for a 50 year period?

Aaron Amick

Generally, the shipyard that builds a submarine can also do the maintenance.

billionsofblue

Thanks for this really comprehensive look at how this deal came to be. It seems like it might still be a good idea for the Australian navy to buy a few Japanese or German subs while they wait. What's another few billion, and they'd have some decent boats right away.

Phoa Yew Hui

The best subs from countries near the South China Sea or Straits of Malacca would probably be those from Singapore. The newest diesel boats are first-rate, Type 218SGs. The older Vastergotland subs and some Sjoormen subs are still in service.
