Great brief, Aaron. Incidentally, the diagram of the masts and sail doesnt mention any kind of surface search radar. Is that the dish on top of the ESM antenna?

Adam Snook

When the divers cut into the hull, does that mean that any air pockets left will flood or is it possible to cut in from near the bottom somehow and create something a bit like a moon pool?

Bob Smith

Great brief! Inside drydock photos after sinking were were awesome and terrible to view. The NATO subs close by..Could they hear this through the water or feel it? Or just the sonar guys via headphones?

Aaron Amick

The sonar guys definitely heard it, but I suspect they felt it too. Water doesn't compress, so ships/sub rock when that much energy is in the water.

Aaron Amick

There was a small air pocket in the very back of the sub with 7% oxygen measured when the rescue divers entered.

Tim Baber

Excellent Sub Brief - thank you.

Adam Snook

Thanks for the reply. Does that mean that there was likely progressive flooding of the after compartments after the initial explosion then?

Sawyer Regensberg

I was glued to the TV when this happened: wanting beyond everything to know if they saved the crew. when the Russian Navy didn't...I almost HAD to know why. in a lot of ways the Kursk is what brought me here...I needed to understand how and what caused it, why the men weren't able to be rescued. that opened a lot of doors for military history--why Russian subs are designed the way they were led to USN doctrine and their ships, etc.

Aaron, have you heard of the Kursk adventure/documentary game on steam? It's by a company called jujubee S.A. I'm not sure if it's the kind of thing you'd have interest in, but if it is, I'd love to hear your thoughts. As I understand, it's a relatively short game to play through. Also, forgive me if you have a playthrough of it, I couldn't find one. Thank you!

This is going to be a deeply interesting Sub Brief, what a tragedy this incident was!

[γδ(αμ)]

It's a very fascinating, extremely deep and meandering rabbit hole of information we've all stumbled into, isn't it?

Marcus Looney

Fantastic job as always. I remember this tragedy. I was only 13 at the time.

acac

This was a really sad one.

Incredible sub brief, it’s truly a shame that Russian admirals and higher ups were concerned about security than it’s sailors, plus even the collapse of the Soviet Union probably did not put enough money for testing and maintaining those old torps which deteriorated over time. Hopefully now they somewhat address the design of its subs, cause I saw somewhere that this oscar class had a faulty design where all air ducts and piping where open and connected to the command compartment which is probably why as soon as the explosion occurred it quickly took over the command compartment, when maybe they could have had a little more time to save the ship before the second explosion. it’s newer subs like the borei class have the escape capsule in the back which could have helped in this situation but it shows that the escape capsule is more for morale than actually use. All I can ask for is that there are a lot of smaller countries out there operating old subs and old weapons, I hope that they learn from this which they probably haven’t cause sub tragedies have still occurred after this incident.

Luke Walker

I would kill to hear that audio of the explosion that you heard from the Memphis or Toledo. I assume it isn’t out on some dark part of the internet? Also is the bow still just sitting there to this day or did they pick that up after?

Craig T

Well done on this one team. This is without doubt the best one I have seen so far. Love your work. Thank you

New Man

Excellent brief. Terrible incident.

Rich Haynes

Very professional brief. Enjoy your work.

Raven Coldheart

A terrible tragedy, I remember the day I heard it in the news on the 16th. And just as I predicted, you (once again) managed to respectfull merge the objective account with your own experiences.

Damien Envy Wrath

what about the story I heard that a US Sub had fired on the Kursk and that is why it sank?

Aaron Amick

That did not happen. Who ever started that story literally, in the very literal sense, made that up. Also called lying. There are 3 different sources, Russia, U.K. and the United States. All three countries have live audio recordings of the event and from all three sides there are no weapons in the water.

Damien Envy Wrath

The source of the story I heard is the documentary Kursk: A Submarine in Troubled Waters, it is rentable on Amazon Prime, but how you put it the documentary is probably a lot of miss information.

Chris

In RAN submarines we always said rescue and escape systems were to keep wives and girlfriends happy. With the depth of water around Australia we knew we would die in an accident. Accordingly maintaining those systems was probably not given the priority it deserved. This may have been a Russian attitude too

Adrian Johansson

Sweden still used Hydrogen Peroxide Torpedoes like Torped 62

Aaron Amick

I am surprised. I would hope they have better quality control.

F. I'm afraid that even if Russian Navy accepted the NATO help, then they'd could only find dead bodies. Unless the help was offered, like, in an hour after the incident. I'm pretty sure that the help was offered after the knocking has already stopped. A lot of time was wasted in the beginning of all of this. The Russian leadership is fully responsible for that. But don't blame them for refusing the NATO's help, unless it was offered literally in the first hours since the accident - in that case, yeah, you can blame them for that.

Thomas Riley

NATO help was offered as soon as they were aware.

Yuri

Well, I finally ran out of YouTube content to watch on your channel. :D

Charley

This story always puts a lump in my throat. And to think those remaining sailors thought they were going to be rescued. Horrifying. Great brief as always.

Jason Baxter

Thank you for explaining this with professionalism. The idea of an object in the medium of water transmitting a shock so massive it registered as an earthquake. It really is an astonishing thought, reminds me of how terrible a real warshot would be if it came to that.

Blair Shaw (Subhunter)

Admiral popov was the guy who went on TV and made his plea Motsak never recovered from this event he died a few years ago I had a run in with him in 2015 just before he died he became very bitter
