Hi everyone! As we recently said in the previous Patreon post, the app will soon be available in multiple languages but we need your support to make this happen!

We now have two volunteer roles available to anyone who speaks a language other than English and Chinese (Han): translators and reviewers. The job of translators is obvious, but before their translation can go into the app, it needs to be independently quality controlled by someone - that's where reviewers come in. If you're interested in either of these roles, fantastic! We're taking volunteers right now!

If you want to volunteer, please go to our translation portal (https://translation.botc.app/) and sign up for an account. Then, send an email to support@botc.app with the subject "Volunteer Translation" containing the language(s) you want to help with, how fluent you are in those languages, your username or email address used to sign up, your BOTC.app ID (if you have one), and if you have a preference on whether you'd rather translate or review translations and we'll send you more details on how to get started. This may be a bit of a slow process initially as we process a large number of volunteers, but we'll get you in.

Right now the app contains around 1850 strings. About half of this is game content (characters, rules, definitions and so on) and the other half is the app's interface. In most languages, all of this will need to be translated. However, for several languages where we already have official translations or they're in the works, we won't need to translate the game content, so the job will be a bit smaller. These languages are Chinese (Han), Czech, French, German, Hungarian, Korean, Portuguese (BR), Russian, and Spanish. On top of that, we've already got translations of the app's interface in Chinese and German done by TPI and our partners, so those languages don't currently require any additional input. As things stand, all future updates will accept German community translations, so German speakers should still feel free to volunteer - we just don't have anything for you to translate right now.

As we continue to release more game content for Clocktower and develop the app we will continuously need to update our translations, and there's always room for improvement, so we'll need volunteers going forward. We'll also be accepting translations for the new Script Tool as soon as that's released, so keep an eye out for that!

We'll also (hopefully soon!) have a cool, exclusive, in-app cosmetic to say thanks to those of you who helped us to bring Clocktower to a wider audience. If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask here or send us an email!

Volunteer? Why aren't you paying? That's disgraceful.

We've translated the app into a whole bunch of languages already, many of which are massively underserved by the board games community. But the simple truth is that we can't afford to translate it into all 6,000 languages spoken on this big ball that we all inhabit. We want Welsh players to be able to play in their native tongue, but it's just not feasible to translate it into Welsh ourselves. We want all 10 of the languages spoken in India to be available, so that Indians can play in their mother tongue. But to spend the tens of thousands of dollars required to translate it into just a couple of those languages would cause us to lose obscene amounts of money, in order to sell zero copies in Indian because those folks may want to play with Indians who don't speak their particular local dialect. So we've given players the tools to make it happen, should they choose to. And we're offering to help verify it when it is done. We literally cannot do any more without causing TPI to go bankrupt and the app to no longer exist. - Ben

I think it's a great idea! Also there's significantly more than ten spoken in India too just to add to the point, I think it's cool that it's an official tool to help serve more communities!

Can we add another language to the list if we are willing to undertake it? If so, who should we contact about this?

Blood on the Clocktower

Absolutely, we're happy to add any and all languages that you want to translate the app / game into! Just follow the instructions from the above post.

An official translation and release is coming out in my native language. A board game publisher has purchased the distribution rights and is working with its own translator. In addition, we have a community, which is practically nationwide, and we get together every month to play in person, and we also play online a couple of times a week. Several people have already made 'fan translations', which are in use. However, the 'official' translation team did not take into account the translations used in the community (and therefore widely known), so several interested parties have already stated that they would rather not buy the native language edition. This is why I believe community translations have an advantage: they are created by people who know the game and the subtle differences in certain phrases.

Omg as someone learning Welsh, I'd love to play the game in the language!!

Where it is, this unique cosmetic?

If you still need help with translating and proofreading Czech language, feel free to reach me. I am native Czech and have physical copy of game now, so I can double check if suggested translations are compatible with physical version.
