Dick was physically, mentally and sexually abused by his grandfather. Very sad. The box has evil sprits and bad memories in it. It's a doctor sleep reference (the shining part 2)

In doctor sleep Halloran also talks about his grandpa that we see at 31:38 and how mean and cruel he was to him , doctor sleep shoes a good bit of him and his stories too, the shining is also such a good book
