I get why someone would hire an energy expert that didn’t make the cut. Maybe they’ve improved since then or discovered something new? But to hire one to use the energy type that wasn’t good enough for the test doesn’t make sense. If it wasn’t good enough, maybe someone should have asked why. Well, maybe he won’t get eaten and will learn a lesson.

You do have to keep in mind that James only chose five assistants out of the population of a dozen universes. Even if someone didn't make the final cut, that doesn't mean that they were bad. It just means that the ones chosen were better in the eyes of the person choosing them.
